Wow. I just plugged George Santos into a Google search. The internet is exploding with "revelations" about his fabricated bio. A con man revealed. Many are blaming the Dems for not making this public info well ahead of the election. Good point. But a political party of any integrity would at least slightly vet a candidate before supporting him. Oops I said integrity in reference to the GQP. How silly. Of course, to TC's point...they don't care! Santos could be an ax murderer - but if he could win they would embrace him. Is it really the job of the opposing party to uncover such bullshit? It's normal to do basic oppo research...sure...but....

Let's lay some blame where it really lies - now that we have established that the GQP would endorse a dolphin from Mars if they thought it could win and vote with it's flipper.

The blame lies in a news system that is caught up in repeating itself with not enough hard core investigative journalism. It echoes the scoops of others instead of hitting the streets and the bars and the meetings where people know the truth. There ARE some really good "reporters". Just not enough of them. Need some Ida Tarbell now!

My only hope is that the "Santos lesson" will have editors screaming at their staff: "Why didn't you know about this? It could have been Pulitizer reporting! You have been asleep at your desks!" "I want the full story and the back story of who backed this faker by tomorrow morning!"

Right on, Bill A. Let's hope editors wise up and do the work! The NYT "background" stories on "How Trump did....x, y, z" are the equivalent of People Magazine (I'm afraid I may tar some honest revelations with a broad brush, but you get the point, I hope.) How fake can you be?

Could say the same for Herschel Walker, but at least he wasn’t elected. But it was stupid close.

I see the Walker thing as very different...the info on HIM was always right out there for the world to see. this Santos thing...lying about EVERYTHING and no one catching on until six weeks after election day...it just doesn't seem even POSSIBLE at this point in time. maybe nobody thought it (he) was important enough? but it turns out he's one of a tiny majority. votes.

"fucking pathetic," to quote one of my old therapists.

Good point about Walker. But maybe there was so much focus on the Warnock/Walker race and other election shit shows, Santos was not on anyone’s radar.

Expand full comment

True, Bur we “liberals” must also not go overboard. Centrist might be better for all.

Expand full comment

thing is, I have no idea what "centrist" means. anybody I can think of who described himself/herself (I lost a point on my English Regents, compromising a perfect score, and the mistake was subject/verb agreement, so I have trouble using "they") as "centrist." I even (now, at any rate) have a problem with "liberal," since "classic Liberalism" sounds a lot like Libertarianism and I'll shoot myself before identifying myself as possibly having anything in common with the Ayn Rand incel creeps who call themselves "Libertarians." this is why I call myself a "Social Democrat," although Tom says it's a "New York thing." it probably is, but I've been a New York thing since 1949 so why deny my heritage?

seriously, though...everyone I can think of who identifies as "centrist" looks to me like what was once called a "Rockefeller Republican." and for the record, I was raised to HATE Rockefeller lest it seems like I'm endorsing anything Republican.

A good description of how far right American politics have been pulled. "Rockefeller Republican" is now "centrist."

funny...I was just thinking about exactly that and I was just about ready to come to the same conclusion but stopped myself when I got the distinct feeling that today's "centrists" might well be a little bit to the RIGHT of the "Rockefeller Republicans." a little bit.

Please correct your spelling of Kinzinger on the Jan 6 Committee. You spelled it the same as Henry's last name--Kissinger. What makes this piece all the more important is what the special committee did today. I applaud them referring these people to the DOJ. But it would be far better if they simply ordered the arrest of every republican in Congress, and I wouldn't mind seeing the two republicans on the committee as part of it, since both of them helped make it all possible as well. Today the committee dealt with symptoms. The disease still racks the body politic.

True, but I think we have to give Cheny and Kinzinger reduced sentences for good behavior. They have both taken it on the chin standing up to the Insurrectionists.

Given that both of them voted against the Electoral count Reform Act - which would solve the problem they have been dealing with on the committee, I'm no longer optimistic on any conservative who remains in the party.

it's funny that this prick is representing Northeast Queens AND the North Shore because about a week ago, my friend declared that people in Bayside (very much Northeast Queens) like to pretend they're from...(drumroll)...the NORTH SHORE. I objected that the guys I knew from Bayside when I was growing up were some of the great freaks (think the positive, late '60s usage) of all time. he pointed out that things might have changed since then and of course, he's right. for the record, I've known quite a few proud North Shore assholes and they're among the worst people I've ever been exposed to. my good-for-nothing sister has aspired to be one of their number for about thirty years and all she does with her friends is have lunch (I'm not sure about the compulsive spin classes being maintained now that she's 70), during which the only topics of conversation are the last cruise and the vast amounts of money they spend on their long-grown children.

but, detest them as I may, I'm not sure they deserve Mr. Santos. still, you have to sort of admire the swollen balls he'd need to lie about EVERYTHING. obviously, he knew a little more about the stupidity and incompetence of NY Democrats that, say, I do. but I'm also the worst liar I know, so I assume that ANYBODY who lies will eventually get caught. good thing I'm not in politics.

having said that, I'll immediately admit to trying to lie in the last paragraph. Santos and the people he's representing pretty much deserve each other.

and vis-a-vis Don Jr. (who, it seems increasingly clear, is in danger of not making it to anything like his biblical span) and his bullshit: how can the Repubs be delivering what we "need" (I sure as shit don't WANT it) WITHOUT the necessary folks in Washington? but let's remember that his reputation in private school and college was entirely based on his tendency to piss in other people's beds (look it up). and--oh YEAH--HATING on his dad.
