Mr friend Rick Perlstein, author of the four books (Before the Storm, Nixonland, The Invisible Bridge, and Reaganland) you should read to gain a real understanding of the past 65 years of history that got us to where we are today, has a weekly colun now at The American prospect, “the Infernal Triangle,” which you should read also.
When Gore made that horrible choice, Philip Roth told friends that if anyone asked his opinion, he was unavailable for comment because he had gone to the doctor to get his foreskin sewn back on. That about covered it (no pun intended).
All of those sappy obits for Lieberman, even on MSNBC, was all the proof one needed that the Washington Press Corpse (love your phrase), really are a major part of the problem in the country. The professionalization of journalism provided the second sons of the well-to-do a place to land other than the military or monastery. They have brought the cultural prejudices of their families with them and infected the entire lot. It’s the reason the press in DC and NY repeatedly fall for the Republican line.
I’ve wondered for a long time what motivated Lieberman. Ambition, of course, that’s a given. But why did he intuit that being a wolf in sheep’s clothing would be the best way to serve his ambition? Or was he from the start a man without empathy? Not sure how it reflects on me, but I’m honestly relieved that he can’t do any more mischief.
The hagiography I read in the fish-wrapper that The Bulwark has become about Lieberman's passing made me see fucking red. (it also reinforces my decision to cancel my paid sub there, they just get so much shit horribly wrong.)
I love all the Perlstein books. Everyone should read them
The arrival of Kristol there, replacing Charlie Sykes, reminds me every day how much I thought he and the "Project For a New American Century" were a real threat to the republic (as they demonstrated, getting Bush to invade Poland, er, I mean Iraq.).
Subscribe to Rick Wilson's substack if you need jolt of The Real Deal in never-Trumpism.
I just discovered that they changed the address and name of the morning newsletter. If you unsubscribe to it you will unsubscribe to The Bulwark, no just the newsletter. Grrrrrrrrr......
I just didn't want to line their pockets so they can't hire shitbags like Cathy Young, Eggers, and I am sure they really want to add Ruy Texiera to the staff.
If JVL had a $50 a year stack where the Secret Pod and the daily Triad were published, I would sub in a heartbeat
I read Perlstein's excellent column earlier -- his "Infernal Triangle" series has been really good so far, but I really, really liked this one. We shouldn't let Joe Manchin alone set the bar for what a DINO looks like. (As a New Englander, I take Lieberman more personally than I take Manchin.) I wasn't a big fan of Gore and I couldn't stand Lieberman, but of course I voted for the ticket anyway -- and it's beyond a no-brainer that the country and the world would be in better shape today if Gore had been president on 9/11.
I knew that election was stolen from the night Dan Rather said there was a problem in Florida. I watched in disbelief as Cheney, Baker and the Stone mob made certain that the “heads we win, tails you lose” strategy would bully the Dems into conceding. I’m still pissed about all that and the price we have all paid for W to be an ex-president, vying for worst.
Leiberman's fatal flaw was that he wanted to be everyone's favorite cousing or uncle, depending on age. That left him spending his time trying to be the most avuncular guy in the room. I thought that was why Gore chose him as a running mate so no DC or corporate feathers would get ruffled. I doubt that Lieberman felt anything but relief when Bush/Cheney were declared the winners by the SC. My guy in that election was Bill Bradley, the guy Gore should have run with, and, yes, I know Bradley had that heart murmur issue, but that didn't stop Cheney, now, did it?

*ded*
Friend of Perlstein? I’m impressed.

He likes my books and I like his. We book people are easy. :-)
God damn, hook this to my veins.

I do pay for Rick Wilson. He is actually doing things, not just flapping his gums like the bulk of the Bulwark.
Kristol spoils every day. Also considering unsubscribing. But I like JVL and Tim. WTH.
You can cancel that particular newsletter without canceling the others. Hit unsubscibe in the next email you get from this newsletter.

I know, it’s just that a really liked the old one. For some reason I keep hoping for something redeeming.
Actually, they changed the name of the morning newsletter and the email address, so if you try to canel it, you cancel The bulwar. Grrrr.....
😡 Why do I feel as if there's some CYA going on.
Has Kristol reverted to type.
Well, he still advocates for nevr-Trumpers to vote Democratic and changed his registration.
A definite improvement, but he was a skanky bastard.
Yesterday's Bill Kristol was just trash. His April Fools was
a sick run. Today wasn't too
bad. Charlie Sykes is really
missed. I appreciate JVL.
I really love TAFM 😁
Flattery will get you *everywhere* Victoria. :-)
😁💚
And that the addition of Andrew Egger is a huge downgrade.
Agree.

Yes to all.
