When Gore made that horrible choice, Philip Roth told friends that if anyone asked his opinion, he was unavailable for comment because he had gone to the doctor to get his foreskin sewn back on. That about covered it (no pun intended).

Friend of Perlstein? I’m impressed.

All of those sappy obits for Lieberman, even on MSNBC, was all the proof one needed that the Washington Press Corpse (love your phrase), really are a major part of the problem in the country. The professionalization of journalism provided the second sons of the well-to-do a place to land other than the military or monastery. They have brought the cultural prejudices of their families with them and infected the entire lot. It’s the reason the press in DC and NY repeatedly fall for the Republican line.

I’ve wondered for a long time what motivated Lieberman. Ambition, of course, that’s a given. But why did he intuit that being a wolf in sheep’s clothing would be the best way to serve his ambition? Or was he from the start a man without empathy? Not sure how it reflects on me, but I’m honestly relieved that he can’t do any more mischief.
