I hate golf. Have always hated it. This stems from enforced watching tourneys in my early years. Trump can take his nine iron and insert it where the sun doesn't shine on his butt and shove it all the way up till he chokes. Save us all the misery of having to put up with the crap of MAGAism and Trumpism every effing day of our lives and the nauseating
minute by minute coverage of
every court hearing. Don't NYT and WaPo have other
stories and events to cover?
CNN?
Yes, I'm royally ticked off. Have seen nothing but negativity from 2 of the Substacks I have respected for objective commentary.
Off the rails today!
People have got to get off Biden's age! I hope I'm doing as well when I hit 80! As for Harris, give it up! Step into her VP shoes and do her job. Good luck! So she doesn't get along with everyone. Cry me an effing river!!! She's not in the job to run a popularity contest.
This delightful piece reminds me of a remark attributed to the great American poet/journalist/artist Kenneth Rexroth, something to the effect that while the corporate boys went around during the day playing golf and making crooked deals, his job as a writer was to go around the golf courses at night and shit in the holes. FORE!
I'm still not sure how Golf ever got to be considered a spectator sport. I played two games with my dad in Detroit when I was about fourteen or so, where he'd reluctantly play with my uncle and a few of his dentist friends. after the second game, we both realized how much we couldn't stand it and agreed to stop.
over the years, though, several people for whom I have great affection and respect have gotten hooked on it and say it's the best thing they ever started doing. but they all agree that the reason they love it has nothing to do with winning, but everything to do with what's been called "the inner game."
for this reason, I always assumed that TFF had to be a big cheat. having it confirmed is, for me, kind of a yawner; the scumbag has no inner resources with which to play ANYTHING involving any sort of "inner game."
Worse than trying to get the ball to go where you want it to go, is, first...trying to HIT THE DAMN THING. I had a friend who love to play...(she was an "inner game" kind of gal) and she swore it was a fun, relaxing game. I took a few lessons and on our first game together, I got into my best stance and made a mighty swing. I hit the face of Mother Earth so hard, I think I may have registered on the Richter scale. My shoulder has never hurt so much before or since as it did that night. Along with assaulting the beautifully groomed course with many drivers, I left a trail of replaced divots until the second hole, whereupon I told my friend I would caddy for her and then we could both relax. Horrible, horrible "game"!
I tried to play golf. My husband, the golfer was thrilled to buy me equipment. I took some lessons; they did not help.
We moved to our current place adjacent to a golf course, of which I am not a fan. Balls land in my yard on a regular basis. Since I am often in the backyard gardening, errant golf balls have to be watched for. If I am outside when an errant shot is hit, I relentlessly make fun of the golfer. I can also see the closest tee on our fairway.
I regularly see absolutely AWFUL golf swings and think, "Damn! I can do that." I realized that my golf game had no potential for improvement, plus playing made me anxious. Life is way too short to try to enjoy something you inherently dislike.
oh I get that. I also get what people mean when they talk about the "inner game." but there's no "inner game" if you cheat. and, however difficult it is (and it certainly IS difficult), it's just not fun to watch. for me, at any rate. and it's only a walk in the park if you walk.
Lol unless it’s 96° with 88% humidity and it’s a fundraiser for your kid’s school. Used to love watching golf, until the past years. Boycotting the whole damn thing with SHIV.
Hell I couldn’t even hit the ball when I got talked into trying it. I was pretty good at flinging chunks of dirt and grass into the air but that was counted against me. I decided to stick with running and cycling and leave golf to someone who liked it.
‘For more beautiful words from this stable genius, buy Rob Sears’ “strictly unauthorized” collection, The Beautiful Poetry of Donald Trump.’
I'm not shilling for Rob Sears, just providing an option in case you are a lover of Trump's lies or simply want a collection of them in the form of 'poetry'.
1) From Riley's book: Mike Tirico, a fantastic broadcaster, played a round with tfg.* He hits the 'shot of his life,' to within six inches of the hole. Asswipe races up to the green and throws the ball in the trap. Typical for Deranged Orange.
2) I don't tolerate liars too well. I can bullshit with the best of them, though. A friend of mine's late father told me once, "never bullshit a bullshitter," and he was the master.
3) Kareem's speech was fantastic (it also featured standout performances from David Constable and Holland Taylor), "I grew up in 1960s America, looking like this. People wanted to kill me. I battled Leukemia, open-heart surgery, cancer, fire and racism. You think I'd be upset at missing a damn sky hook after dealing with all that? People like us know it's a crime to waste what we have. If we don't take the shot, who the hell else will?"
Personally, I think that even if he goes to prison, the MAGA faithful will still vote for him.
Loved the deep dive into his morals through golf. I don't play, have never had much interest in the game, but it does seem like there are two main threads about how the game is played -- each person's score and handicap, and how well the rules are adhered to. It's clearly a game that fairly well demonstrates the Honor System, and the idea of who holds to that Honor Code and who doesn't, is very much a sign of that person's own moral code. Surely, the fact that golf is so integral to many business dealings, must show that it also becomes a way to determine the morals and trustworthiness of business associates. I appreciate your spelling it out where Trump is concerned. Not surprised at all.
The Honor System - sort of reminds me of the system of governance - far too many loopholes in "how its always been done". Strange that the writers of the Constitution didnt think ahead enough to realize that eventually someone will come along who has no honor. Actually, not just one someone but many currently.
Tom I $ subscribe to you, Joyce, Heather and Kareem, just read others. Kareem is a joy to read and his human and jazz videos are a joy. Who knew? I saved his comment to me one day for posterity.
That said, as a former avid golfer (5 days a week, married then to a PGA pro) we knew who the cheats were, and we simply didn’t play with them. If in a tournament you called them on bullsh*t. Trump’s cheating is testimony to his vacuity, narcissism and lack of any character whatsoever, and the same for those who say nothing. Much like the current MAGAt party. Who could feel pride if ill gotten. Golf is a game against yourself, only peripherally against your partner. Maybe slightly more if bragging rights are involved. A dozen top flights aren’t worth your integrity. 67? Net vs. gross isn’t even comprehensible. I’ve seen him shank it.
That’s quite a lot of verbiage re: tRump’s golf game. Here’s what I know about his golfing: He cheats. Tie that with his hyperbole and self-aggrandizement, and I call BS to his claims.
He’s facing a federal trial on March 4th, and for that, I’m glad.

Thank goodness despite all the BS and lies from so many the current of hope has not dried up. That's why these indictments of the former "president" and his co-conspirators are so monumental for the nation and ultimately for the entire project of government for and by the people, "that it will not perish from the earth."

Just shared on FB. This is just one of a number of different campaign ads I've been seeing for weeks.
GOOD rant! I hope getting all that out makes you feel comfy & relaxed! You said it all..
I feel a bit better, Maggie. Thanks.😁
That had a nice bite tonit !!!🙂

Given how much I hate the game of golf, I love that.
Stewart, you have a way of putting delightful pieces into holes, truly magical!
Thanks Fern. I was inspired by TC's magical hole-in-one essay!
😄😄😄❤️
🤣🤣🤣
Sooo - no surprise - nothing new, TC! He's a sleazy conman & thats all he will ever be - period.

fuck him. yet again.
The actual fact about golf is that *playing it* is hard. Getting that ball to go where you want is not easy.
Worse than trying to get the ball to go where you want it to go, is, first...trying to HIT THE DAMN THING. I laughed out loud.

true all t hat
It's an exclusive walk in the park. The game is window dressing.
A friend of mine, a long-time realtor in San Diego, told me he liked playing golf because it relaxed him and helped him focus.
I can believe that.
Hell I couldn’t even hit the ball when I got talked into trying it. I was pretty good at flinging chunks of dirt and grass into the air but that was counted against me. I decided to stick with running and cycling and leave golf to someone who liked it.

“A man who tells lies, like me, merely hides the truth. A man who tells half-lies has forgotten where he put it.” Lawrence of Arabia…
Three things:
1) From Riley's book: Mike Tirico, a fantastic broadcaster, played a round with tfg.* He hits the 'shot of his life,' to within six inches of the hole. Asswipe races up to the green and throws the ball in the trap. Typical for Deranged Orange.

If we don't take the shot, who the hell else will?"
And that's the heart of the scene. "If we don't take the shot, who the hell else will?"
Tom, I also loved Holland Taylor's speech about 'addicts.' Looks like she's going to have a recurring role the rest of the season.
Yes, she seems very interesting - her character.
TC, please submit your hole-in-one essay to The Atlantic & perhaps the The Guardian for worldwide distribution!
Well, he just tried to move his ball on Judge Chutkan's Course and she made him put it back!!!
Personally, I think that even if he goes to prison, the MAGA faithful will still vote for him.

He’s facing a federal trial on March 4th, and for that, I’m glad.
So, according to the National Golf Assn., approximately 15% of casual players cheat. How sad.
He said he shot a 67. He didn't say how many holes.
Also, to do it, he had to get the ball around windmills.
