Walz grew on me fast. Two weeks ago I didn’t know he existed. And everything I’ve read about him confirms he’s the citizen politician we dream of. Both his back story and what he’s actually done and advocated for confirms it. This also gives me increased confidence in Harris’ judgement.
Anyone in America can imagine sitting with Tim Walz over a beer. As a retired teacher, I'm thrilled we'll FINALLY have a regular person on the top ticket. BigDadEnergy. We're going to crush them. LFG!
But isn't it intriguing that no one thinks of Kamala Harris, who is a scant 6 1/2 months younger than Walz, as "everybody's favorite aunt"? I hope someone will write an in-depth article on what "politics" demands of women, esp. women of color, vs. what it tolerates in men.
I haven't run into that yet but I'm sure I will soon. (I have, however, run into "Mamala.") I'm guessing that this is at least partly in response to all the misogynist crap about childless cat ladies, because she is indeed a stepmother. But she still doesn't look maternal the way Tim Walz looks avuncular.
Another grand choice by Harris. He was the football coach who started a gay/straight alliance in Mankato because it was important that it was done by a football coach who was straight and married.
My joy meter is up to the exuberant zone. MAGA campaign will try to label him as a progressive but that will be a tough sell to many moderate voters across the country. His persona and bio make for a beautiful beacon. Yes, women can go to the doctor all by themselves, school kids are hungry so let’s feed all of them!
Also the high school football coach who took the small town team to the state championship. All kinds of people will like that story (think "Hoosiers").
And the teacher who used his position as football coach to make it OK for the first gay-straight student alliance at a high school in Minnesota.
We have some friends who have a son in Washington, DC. He works for some kind of Dem strategizing outfit and his parents--our friends--spent an hour this past weekend, telling us how Josh Shapiro was gonna be the pick, because he'd bring all of PA's Electoral votes with him. (I had my doubts about that and also because of Michigan and Shapiro's support of Israel...but I didn't say anything)...but I kept hoping Vice President Harris would choose Walz!!! Yay!!! Finally, some Progressive power on the ticket!
The pundits seem to have been so sure that it was going to be Shapiro, and if not Shapiro, then Kelly, and I am *so thrilled* that they were wrong and it's gonna be Tim Walz. And now at least some of the pundits seem bemused, like "Huh?" Since I'm involved in a local Israel-Palestine group, most of whose members are younger than I am (73), I sensed that Shapiro would be a problem -- and my personal challenge has been to persuade my colleagues to vote for Harris even though they're not happy at all with the Biden administration's waffling on Israel policy. With Shapiro on the ticket I might have thrown in the towel.
Do you really think that Vance has the cojones to debate Walz? BTW, I agree completely on the quality of the choice. We have another leg up on the opposition.

Tim Walz is an excellent choice! Among the multitude of reasons is he's a hunter who not only originated (not one but) two Governor's Hunting openers here (pheasant and turkey), he got common sense gun legislation passed for Minnesota. A big step in the right direction on that front.
It had to be a tough choice for Harris because of the volume of standouts in consideration, any of whom would do a great job as POTUS should the need arise. And Walz's internship as VP can set him up for 2032 once Americans see the value of longterm good governance.
Your comments about Walz's students campaigning for him gives me confidence too. Kids and animals know who the good folks are. Can you imagine Trump in a classroom? I can, and I can assure you he'd spend many late afternoons reinflating the tires on his car and dealing with other adolescent mischief (Note: Kids around here already know how to get around cams and alarms.). JD Vance would be like the substitute teacher that is happy to issue 20 lavatory passes at once.
