on the verge of throwing up now, due to the uncertainty existing at this moment. I realize it's too early to call anything, but that TFF could still attract this many votes is horrifying.
You do remember, when you close your front door behind you to go out, to remind yourself that 50% of the people you are about to meet will be "below average," right?
True, but while a normal curve may exist for some population characteristics that shall not be enumerated here, (at least partially) cultural features like sensitivity, kindness, open mindedness, inquisitiveness need not follow the bell curve and can be skewed by programs, popular expectations and ... (droops) sadly, media.
and now, these hours later, it's all just so fucking grim.
I find myself talking to friends of mine born (as I was, just) in the '40s and right now, the best thing we can come up with is : "well our day-to-day lives will change very little if we..." and the ellipse says everything. if...WHAT??
it's not even the ideology, which is loathsome at all times and nasty/idiotic at its most brilliant. it's the vessel as well. it feels like half the country just said "up your ass, yeah we're electing a senile sociopath because that's how we feel about you."
this feels like shit and I hope like hell everything will be different when I wake up.
Hopefully. I too am struggling not to harbor fairly hostile feelings toward many of our fellow Americans. Despite the polls it did not feel like it would be this close, so I am probably suffering from a popped bubble admitting foul air I hadn't adequately adapted to. I hope to hell I don't have to adapt eventually, either.
I think it might be the widespread addiction to carnival and chaos generated by mobile devices. People's realities are now generated by their fingers. They think they are in control because of their phones, but their phones are in control of them. Wars will be won and lost on screens and keyboards with drones and other electronically controlled devices. Testosterone is obsolete. So is estrogen.
My decision. Turning off election results. I’ve a couple of unfinished novels . The suspense is too anxiety producing and I’ve done my decades of fighting those demons. Hope the evil one is defeated. That’s all I’ve got. My cell is exploding. May Kamala gain and win.
Boy, the early returns are brutal, even though they are based largely on projected results - Trump is projected to have 213 electoral votes as of10:00PM to Harris's 145. The Repubs are also leading the House by 50% and the Senate is looking out of play for the Dems. It is looking bad, and of course if we lose the Senate, a lot of what Kamala Harris said she would try to do will not get done, period. I am enraged at this point by the news people treating this strictly as a race, without a word about the stakes or what may well happen if the Orange Rind is reelected. As H.L. Mencken famously said of the American voters, some day they will get what they want, and get it good and hard. Right now, it appears his prediction may be taking shape. Adam Serwer in The Atlantic wondered if the US has in fact changed from the country we all grew up in. Tonight I wonder the same thing..... Still, the program ain't over until the fat lady sings, and right now I think she's passed out drunk.....
Personally, I celebrate Josh Stein's win in the NC Governor's race! He's a good man. His opponent was the Black version of the orange sadist. The fact that voters turned down the grotesque robins-son gives me hope that they will also turn down the grotesque orange sadist, and elect Harris, a very good woman. I'll take every bit of good news I can get!!
I am SO upset about that. I had deliberately stayed away from the news until the past 25 minutes or so. I know now what the stories mean when they say of a person who has lost a war, that their mouth felt "filled with ashes". That is how I feel. I keep realizing over and over, each as if for the first time, "It's over. It's over. This is no longer the land in which I was born and have lived for my entire life. We're leaving." The only thing that helps to lighten the millstone that now sits in my heart, and threatens to choke me, is that I had decided a long time ago that if the orange sadist won, and our country was no longer a democracy, we would not stay. I have done a bit of research about which countries are possibilities for our move. I have more work to do. But I am so thankful that I made this decision long ago. I have no agonizing about should we go, or should we stay? No. We go. And with that certainty, I can breathe again. My country is dead. The wealthy and the powerful have destroyed it. Hitler lives again. It's all over.
Actually Portugal has changed their policy on emigration and dissolved their tax agreement with the U.S. You will be taxed on all income including Social Security along with the taxes you pay in the U.S. on your income. The Golden Visa program has been dissolved also and Portugal also changed the Digital Nomad visas.
if you have any direct Irish ancestry, Ireland is probably good. my grandnephew can probably manage Italy because his grandparents were born there. I can go...where? ISRAEL??
England's a shithole, but I love it. but emigrating there would be impossible for me. I just don't have enough money. my place is worth a lot of money, but housing there is more expensive than it is here. I have an English cousin with a house in London, but that would require me being a schnorrer, and it's not like we're close friends or anything.
this is me, thinking aloud.
inthe meantime, I have LOTS of these gummies and plan on staying very high for the next week or so.
but the bottom line is that right now, it feels like my actuarial situation might have changed pretty radically last night.
I know, I know...only if I let it. but how true is that, really?
Interesting that you say that, because that is the country I am most leaning toward! My research shows, however, that new restrictions make it much harder to get the residency visa.
My research led me to France. I’m leaving to explore cities next week. Our country will not see democracy as a form of government again during my lifetime. I choose democracy over despotism.
I am upset that the skeletal (R)Rick Scott, FL will go back to the Senate where he is a fear mongerer on Social Security and Medicare. At least his opponent (D)Debbie Mucarsal-Powell had the best campaign ad ever of Scott as a slithering python! It should get an award!!!
Right this minute I am sick looking at the Electoral votes.....she needs a quick infusion!
Thanks, Tom. With around 200,000,000 persons of voting age, we need to have, nationwide, in all 50 States, secure mail in voting, with prepaid return envelopes mailed too all registered voters during the first week of October in all even numbered years; as well as a minimum of 7 consecutive days of early voting between the hours of 7 am to 8 or 9 pm. AND, most of, all uniform voting regulations nation wide.
As with education, voting should be both a privilege and a right of all citizens, both native born and naturalized. It is ridiculous that in One Nation, education, and voting privileges should depend on the accident of birth and residency. It should be dependent on your Nationality. We are all Americans.
Of course, while we're talking "should" we should have already eliminated the electoral college. I'm all for it and have long been so, but the sheer number of texts I began to receive on my phone in less than the past month became aggravating to me. YES, but where was this extremely high pressure four years ago? Three? Two? But two weeks out I am putting my money toward House and Senate campaigns, not something that may not end up making a difference in a 2028 race that might never happen if 45 wins and Vance/Thiel/Musk reign. But I agree with you, this system Stinks. I think I'll try a Tums now...
Yes we need to end the electoral college. BUT a Constitutional Amendment is out of the question. We need 38 States to agree and that isn't going to happen. Our best bet is the States compact which only needs 271 electoral votes to pass.
My suggestions do not require either an amendment, nor an inter State compact. Simply put, the Democrats need control of both houses to pass legislation. We will know by Friday if we have won or lost.
Were all these despicable people hiding under rocks or what? Did all the efforts to get out the vote just turn over rocks? I have always said I suspected "Independent" voters were just using code for "GOP but ashamed to admit it", but I had no idea they were actually MAGAT and just hiding it. How did so many of the nationally recognized GOP endorse Kamala and this many of "the people" still go for... that small stupid spiteful nasty thing?
You know those sci fi books where one person is the pivot who, if replaced, would alter the totality of reality? I felt Comey was it for 2016 and I feel Garland was it for today. If he had done his job immediately 45 would be a federally convicted felon unable to run for president. If the corporate press had not supplied the ecosystem for 45's glorification, we would not be hanging on the hope of winning a specific three states with no wiggle room and 5 million more in the popular vote going to... 45?? Did the pandemic alter that many of our central nervous systems that we are now a nation of lunatic dull normals?
You know, if I wake up and it looks better then I'll still mean all of this. If Harris wins, I'll still mean all of this. IF we get the chance, we really really need to get working on eliminating the electoral college, expanding the court (winning back the senate first), and improving our educational system.
My heart bleeds for Ukraine, for Gazans, for species other than humans, for our own future generations. For us.
On October 20, 2020 all Brevard County Registered Democrats got e-mails threatening us from the Proud Boys that if we didn’t vote for Trump we would have consequences . The subject read : vote for Trump or else!!! I have a copy of it but I can’t attach it here .
Save it to send to the DOJ. I cannot imagine that isn't illegal. It astounds me people wouldn't know their vote is private and no one could tell how they'd voted. It astounded me to hear women in red regions did not know their husbands could not see or find out their votes. We need much better voter information and it needs to be better standardized and have more penetration.
Florida is toast, we have 6 more years of Senator Rick Scott (R), abortion rights amendment voted down with 57% (needed 60%), my Rep Luna (R) won. Harris’s numbers in many states are below Biden’s and Clinton’s in 2020 & 2016. I’m devastated.
We watched the Great British Bake Off, then Hitchcock's The Birds. Neither of us can abide all the flah-flah the talking heads do on all the networks. It's almost midnight here in Virginia, and we're going to bed and we'll see what the s(h)ituation is in the morning. We're too old for this.....
In Alabama, 10% of the counties overwhelmingly voted for Kamala and Tim! Two counties, including Madison, my county split the difference as did Monroe county about 50-50 split before the absentee ballots come in. We’re moving in the right direction.💙🇺🇸💙
Busy day in south St. Louis County, MO. Lots of people carrying Yes on 3 flyers which is our Abortion freedom Amendment. Way to early to even guess about national or statewide races.

I agree David. WTF!!
Totally agree. I’m astounded at the attraction of his “policies”.

Sorry, everything won't be different when you wake up. But do not despair. You come from people who have experienced worse and it didn't defeat them.
true enough, Tom. true enough.
TC, jump on board as often as you can with your insights.
The early returns were expected. Its distressing in the moment but the talking heads are talking faster than I can comprehend Deep breath,
I do not understand the young males trending to the Devil. My faith in humanity takes on a Lord of The Flies posture

It is the testosterone effect. Think bar fights.

It appears that women refused to save us or themselves
Nor did da yutes who kneel to Joe Rogan
Where did 17 million Democrat votes disappear to?
Inquiring minds are disgusted over here

I turned them off and just spent an hour playing my tuba. My wife is a freaking wreck.

That's what I was finding out. (Are you saying that a person will therefore be DOUBLE-taxed on SS?!)

That recent? Good news!
