I understand that the US media is not loudly reporting that the other part of the deal with Sheinbaum was that Trump agreed to put programs in place to stop the flow of weapons INTO Mexico! That seems huge to me given that Trump is so tight with the NRA and 2A crowd. Plus, that puts the equation heavily to Sheinbaum's favor. Trump meekly backed down on the tariffs, agreed to up gun controls, in exchange for... something Mexico was already doing. 😎

Democrats had better oppose the debt ceiling unless they make republicans scream uncle. Or something similar.

You know Trump and Lil' Blondie will cast this as Trump crushing our neighbors out of fear of the tariffs. The attempted muscle flexing will be pathetic. The farmers screaming once again has gotten his attention. He may be on notice from the tech heads that one more impulsive fiasco like this will result in him being sent to 25th Amendment pastures.

The 25th Amendment has to have the support of the Cabinet and he doesn’t have one and those he has proposed would never vote against him, that’s the main reason they are nominated. The end of his last term was the time for the 25th but a lot of his cabinet had quit in disgust over Jan 6, and there weren’t enough left to involve the 25th. That’s how I remember it anyhow Judith. 🙏

Yes, and while the 25th addresses impairments, it fails to include stupidity as a reason for invoking the Amendment.

I’m retired and receive Social Security benefits. I logged in an hour ago and verified all my info is intact. Then I ordered a new Social Security card. Had to give driver’s license information, etc.

Half an hour later, I got a text message from them, saying I had a message, with a link to login. I figured they wanted to verify I placed the order. I logged in again and it showed no message and listed my last login as last December. WTF!

Can any other members do as Danielle did and report their results?

Never got this message in then past 20+ years from my federal credit union (SFCU):

"SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE: Starting at 9:00 PM PT on 2/5/2025, you may experience an issue with your checking and money market accounts' running balance. The available balance will be correct. Please check back after 7:00 AM PT on 2/6/25 or contact us at [xxx-xx-xxxx] if you need immediate assistance."

Trudeau's agreement was even less of a deal. It says "Canada HAS AND WILL spend the specified number. In other words, not much increase.

I have mentioned this somewhere. First, you have to wonder how you spot fentanyl from a helicopter. More important, as we know most of it crosses the border at ports of entry brought over by US Citizens. So are Mexico and Canada now going to stop every US citizen approaching a port of entry to check for fentanyl? Might want to wait on that trip to Vancouver or Mazatlán. The lines at the border are going to be humungous.

Meanwhile US border agents in the south now have to watch for people taking guns the other way.

Peter Zeihan discussed the fentanyl business in his video today. The WEAK spot in the process is the shipment of the precursor chemicals from China. They are cheap and thus are exempt from customs inspection..... They are then sent to agents in the southern US by the US MAIL, repackaged and shipped to Mexico cartels to be processed into fentanyl. Eliminating the exemption for small cheap packages could intercept enough of the precursor chemicals that it would disrupt the whole fentanyl business as currently set up. Of course, none of what Trump has done will affect the shipment of precursor chemicals from China to the US.....

Oh Jolly. The one huge tariff we could use.

Expand full comment

As it happens, Zeihan did mention that the new tariffs could result in some new inspections because they are blanket tariffs, which means every shipment must be declared, including contents..... Fentanyl precursors could be blacklisted, cutting off that whole supply chain.....

That's MUSK, please. Edmund Muskie was an honest and honorable Maine politician, a former Governor of Maine and former Secretary of State under Jimmy Carter.

Expand full comment

Amen to that. Edmund Muskie’s presidential campaign was ruined by a Republican lie, as was Governor Dukakis’s. By John Kerry’s campaign, they had figured out how to write a whole book of lies. And with Donthecon, it’s lies 24/7. When will Democrats learn how to deal with liars? And musk-rats?

Expand full comment

Please don’t call him Muskie! Edmund Muskie was an honorable Senator and presidential candidate until his career was ruined by Nixon’s lies. There are more than enough nicknames for Elmo, Elonia, Muskrat etc.

OK, who will be the US's "fentanyl czar"? Used to be Jared filled all those roles, he was SO BUSY!!

I'd suggest Musk but he's already a "ketamine czar". Sorta. You know.

The vote will come at least a week before Due Date. Let the vote fail and then negotiate. By so doing you have their attention.

You've turned my down spirits to an upward spiral---powered by loud laughs. But I'm also ready to continue the fight until all these misfits are gone gone gone---may they burn in the special medieval torture chamber of hell. All those gothic cathedral tympani, etc. make clear it is a bit painful, so to speak.
