There is no limit to the lethal ends to which McCarthy and the GOP gang will go as reported by TC in WHY THE GOP WANTS TO GUT THE IRA.

Here's the other side:

BIDEN IS TAKING mccarthy & the gang TO THE CLEANERS!

FACT SHEET: President Biden to Catalyze Global Climate …

2 days ago — The Inflation Reduction Act contains new and expanded tax credits for drivers to purchase new clean vehicles, as well as the first-ever tax …

'The President will be joined by other leaders in new efforts aimed at accelerating progress in four key areas necessary for keeping a 1.5°C limit on warming within reach, specifically:

___Decarbonizing energy: Announcing steps to drive down emissions in the power and transportation sectors, including scaling up of clean energy, setting ambitious 2030 zero-emission vehicle goals, and decarbonizing international shipping.

___Ending deforestation of the Amazon and other critical forests: Working through the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership to mobilize public, private, and philanthropic support.

____Tackling potent, non-CO2 climate pollutants: Launching a Methane Finance Sprint to cut methane emissions and accelerating hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phasedown under the Kigali Amendment.

_____Advancing carbon management: Partnering with countries to accelerate carbon capture, removal, use, and storage technologies through a COP 28 Carbon Management Challenge to deal with emissions that can’t otherwise be avoided.

I had to throw out the Italian friend from upstairs yesterday when he started bloviating with his version of the new-ish Right-wing "talking point" that Biden is "the worst president in history." his presence was, as they say, '"terminated with extreme prejudice." there's no end to the bullshit these guys manage to generate. not unlike actual bulls.

Biden is taking crucial steps in addressing Climate Catastrophe. Another step:

' U.S. has inventoried old-growth forests. Will protection be next?

The report is the federal government’s first estimate of America’s oldest trees. Environmentalists hope it is a step for protecting them from logging.'

'The findings, the result of a year-long review ordered last year by President Biden, are likely to inflame tensions with the timber industry over which forests — especially those in the western United States — should remain unlogged. But they are energizing many conservation activists, including those who argue that old-growth forests are vital for storing carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change' (WAPO) Gifted link below.

This is long overdue - when old-growth forests are cut down for lumber, they are replaced with the typical commercial mono-species planted forests, losing the diversity that comes form having many different types of trees and undergrowth to support a diverse fauna as well.....

So, Biden wins some points from you. Is that so, Bruce?

Expand full comment

Biden gets a lot of points from me as he should from all of us on the side of democracy. He has accomplished an astounding bunch of good stuff with razor-thin margins in Congress - FDR and LBJ had much larger margins in their Congressional Houses than Smokin' Joe. But - he is too wedded to bipartisanship when the other side has no interest at all, and he is also too wedded to the filibuster and other Senatorial traditions that now are used only to stop him from succeeding. And we need to send Ukraine enough ATACMS missiles to take down the Kerch Strait bridge - if the Ukrainians cannot block that bridge, they cannot take Crimea, and that is crucial for Ukraine's future. Not dozens of them, but enough to drop that bridge and give Ukraine a chance to win.

Now reading this, Fern, makes me smile again and realize THERE IS HOPE. If only the Dems could stay working on these projects before R's get in power again and destroy all the hard work going into this. It just doesn't make sense.

I long for the day when the Democratic Party has assertive leadership that will meet the Republicans where they are and STOP worrying about making them mad. Just having Democrats in public office makes the Republicans mad. It is high time for Biden or someone to declare that defaulting on US debt IS unconstitutional, according to the 14th amendment, so there will be no foolishness about increasing the debt limit - just do it and let Quiverin' Kevin scream..... Mint the coin, print the money, whatever.....just do it.

I would only say that meeting these nut jobs where they’re at is a bridge too far. Call them out. They’re playing very dangerous games. Show the people! You don’t even have to call them names and get yourselves sanctioned... just present the facts.

Yes to assertive leadership by dems. Yes to all of your post.

Does Qvering understand that if they burn it all down,

they're going to go up in flames too? How many of

these mongresspeople have stock & bonds? How many of

their uber rich patrons do? The first thing to crash and burn will be the stock market.

That will be a shot fired around the world big time.

Their money won't be safe

anywhere. I hope Dark Brandon's good at playing the game of chicken.

Here’s what Beau said about their budget. https://youtu.be/Rjahp7N42B0. I say their theatrics and proposed budget be called out for the “hoaxes” they are. There are some cuts that will hurt veterans and poor people... because the R’s are asshats. But they didn’t really ‘do’ much. If the IRA has already passed, I doubt they can actually touch it, but they can make noise and spread lies... no new tricks there, and fool their base.

If you don't count Father Coughlin and a few others, right wing media took off in the '80's under Reagan, backstopped by Lewis Powell and then Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes. It was used to shape public opinion and political grievances on the one hand while the other hand was grabbing up local politics to feed into state and then into national. The Dems spent the same period playing nice and assuming the GOP would play by the rules because this is America, dammit!! And the Dems lost ground because of the GOP's slow rolling sucker punch. The capper was the 2010 Citizens United decision (which the ACLU signed on to by the way and which ended my membership and financial support of them.), which set up many of the conditions TC describes herein.

Yes, Biden has been consequential, but he was carried by Nancy Pelosi and the majority House during his first two-years. I can only hope his corners in the ring are telling him to go on offense and let voters know repeatedly that the radical right is happy to sacrifice the well being of their individual states just to make a show of power,, and, no, there will be no bargaining on paying US debts because we will not be a deadbeat nation.

Hi TC, I have long been aware of assertions that our governments (state as well as federal) subsidize the fossil fuel industry. But I've never seen a clear recap, giving chapter and verse, evidence, sources, etc.

Do you have sources for some of the things you've said? I've got some people who Do Not Want To Hear About Those Subsidies....
