I lived through much of that, but I remember people I knew being appalled. Now they are proud. Chump made such evil attractive to many who previously would have been ashamed. But you are right, evil was just a flick of the switch away.
At 76 so did I, not sure I've seen much change evil then evil now, just a chump who shouts what people whispered then, empowering them to shout as well.
