Excellent, cognizant summary, TC. It’s difficult keeping things organized when it’s such an inflammatory, intense subject. Who in the sam heck ever thought such fiction into reality?

I especially appreciated the testimony from Stephen Ayres at the Tuesday, Jan 6th Committee hearing. He went to Washington DC on Jan 6th as he felt it his duty, called by “his” president. He did not expect the call to march to Capitol, but he went along. He did not know the plan to overcome police and enter the Capitol. He went along. He followed tweets and commands coming in from “his president”. He left following command to “go home”.

But charged, he has lost job and home. He alluded to difficulty of being de-programmed and leaving social media. No self deprecating remarks. Pretty straight forward and perhaps accurate snapshot representation of thousands of people there that day.

Unita.🗽

I still say "fuck him."

I can well understand the sentiment and share it. But if we're ever going to have the slightest shot at getting back to "before time" we're going to have to adopt Christine's attitude (further proof we guys should listen to women).

well, yeah, you're probably right. my attitude is almost certainly influenced by the various comments I've seen in various places expressing the opinion that there was something less-than-gracious about the cops' not especially wanting to smile and say "well, okay, everything's okay." or "we're all Americans." or "how thoughtless to deny him his redemption." all of those are comments I've seen, and I think it's very, very easy to sit here, with the benefit of time gone by and physical distance and speculate about how the people should feel who had to live through that nightmare and, in many cases, will never stop reliving it. and that's aside from my residual skepticism, which I've already talked about. the larger issue of how much we should listen to women is one with which I will ALWAYS concur; living up to it isn't always easy. plus, needless to say, it still depends on which woman is saying what... we can all now rattle off several names of some very nasty and UNRELIABLE women (y'know...MTG, Boebert, Pierson, Powell, most of the women in TFF's retinue et al) whose "advice" leads straight to very unpleasant places.

Yeah, I don't think the officers are in the category of people who should think about their response. They have the perfect right to their positions. Those of us who weren't personally attacked have a different responsibility. If we want to get things back, we have to maintain the option of acceptance of an individual's repentance of bad behavior, when that repentance is shown to be more than just words, but also deeds.

Weeks ahead of January 6 my Trumpie sister told us ( her 4 sisters) to " get ready", that something big was happening. She felt it was her duty to warn us. We dismissed it as right wing social media Kracken stuff. But, even she was surprised by the level of violence on Jan6, though she then backtracked to maintain it was just a " tour".

Lots of ordinary people like Stephen Ayres and my sister got caught up into the Trump vortex. I think Ayres' presence at the hearings represents the reality that the violent extremism has moved way out of organized groups like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys and has spawned individuals who now feel it is legitimate for them to take their own violent action for the sake of the trumpian cause of distorted patriotism.

Everyone keeps saying Trump is just a symptom but once he got the power of the presidency he became the prime instigator of so much destruction.

I am so tired of having to live in a world made unsafe by the out of control egos of sociopathic, dysfunctional males like tfg and his ilk. I think it was Bannon who, in one of his online rants, talked about how Trump was on his way to making himself King and then " no more elections", no more fear of losing. I thought the whole idea was to get away from crazy Kings like George III........

Trump can never, ever be allowed even to run for any public office again!

He needs to be tried, convicted and jailed.

First he's got to be indicted. C'mon, Merrick Garland!

Yes, to all. Further, he deliberately primed a mob he knew was armed and sent them to assassinate his own Vice President, spitting his dummy when he was thwarted from joining them in person. Prime candidate for a death penalty in this pacifist's book.

I read this excellent summary, and I just want to throw up. I felt the same way watching the violent mob on January 6. Merrick Garland, get off your ass and get busy. Investigate and go where the facts lead. You’re “killing” us here. Hold this toxic algae of a human accountable.

I was wrong; Nixon should have been prosecuted.

Thank you, TC,

Seeing all those talk show comments in one place was really enlightening and enraging! No wonder people were so worked up! I am so grateful that the coup failed on the 6th. I am also grateful for your well-written posts. And we need vigilance to avoid the success of this ongoing coup. I doubt we can do anything about this kind of hate speech, but it is a big problem ongoing.

Trump told them "To stand down and be ready" in the Virginia clash.

What surprises me in all of this is that there was no significant presence from the left. It is hard to imagine the left (or the authorities) was not monitoring these December-January exchanges.

I was under the impression that those on the left were discouraged from coming so as not to give tfg a reason to call for martial law.

it was so obvious (to me, at any rate) that very bad things were going to happen on 1/6. for anyone on the left to have gone would have been like a declaration of war; war is exactly what it would have been. and one thing I was thinking on that day, as I watched in complete, fascinated horror was what I know pretty much everyone else was thinking: if these rioters were BLM, the ground would have been covered with dead bodies. staying away was the only sensible course of action. I have a friend who tells me he was planning to go down there because he claims it was going to be a protest against vaccination mandates, or something. or maybe he's just lying. god knows if I were in his position and wanted to keep returning to my home, I'd be saying the same thing. this mass stupidity still has the capacity to shock me.
