If there is a military history metaphor for where we are now, it is the summer of 1942, following the battle of Midway and just at the decision to invade Guadalcanal. Midway was won by the narrowest of margins; the United States went into the fight the underdog, making the victory surprising. However, while it has been touted in history since as the “turning point in the Pacific,” that’s not really the case. Winning Midway meant we weren’t going to lose right off.
From Michigan I have a little different perspective on November's elections. As you reported earlier, our state Democratic party purposely supported an evil trumper in order to successfully kick off (and de-halo) Republican Rep. Peter Meijer from the ticket. The Republicans I know in the Grand Rapids area (okay, I don't know the DeVoses even though one of their 5 or 6 houses is in a friend's neighborhood) are not going to vote for rabid tRumpers. Add to that, a legion of wives and girlfriends who are threatening cessation of husband' and boyfriend's access to their lover's reproductive systems if the men should vote for these rabid skunks, and add the legion of proper Christian Reformed Republican women who have had one or 2 abortions, and may need another, I see and feel us moving past the Guadalcanal Moment (or, in future history books, the Kansas Moment), to victory for democracy. My neighbor is a shirttail relative of Admiral Halsey and a history buff. I will get another quote for you. Thanks as always, TC, for being point on and irreverent.

In THE TRUMPERS ARE STILL A MAJOR THREAT, TC, shook away any complacency we might have by bringing us face to face with some of our enemies and to several major battlefields.
Sometimes, I like to mix metaphors. There are TRUMPERS and there are "TRUMPETERS’. Blow those TRUMPERS out the bushes the way Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Bix Beiderbecke, Hugh Masekela, Andrea Motis, Tine Thing Helseth, Arturo Sandoval and Maurice Andre would. Yes, warriors there are women trumpeters on this list who are playing now in 2022.
Find your motivation to do battle - here, among friends, working with grassroots organizations, news stories… What about working on a pep talk; get good at it, so you recruit more pro-democracy, BLUE WAVE WARRIORS who know how to blow the enemy away!
We are Midway to victory. Grassroots to Guadalcanal…converse with all who are interested. No doomerism. Again by Ogden Nash… “The door of a bigoted mind opens outwards so that the only result of the pressure of facts upon it is to close it more snugly.” Keep pressing on the door. We have the facts and historians such as TC and HCR giving us rich context.
Choose your words with intention. The University is listening. It’s not…”hope we win in November.” Its “we gain, we are victorious, we win for democracy in November and every day. Hope follows action with clear intention. Act with optimism. Hope follows bringing forth the impact of our actions. Then we can hope to forge a strong path forward into our future.
