There are so many of us. I am oldest of 14, 13 still living....9 boys, 5 girls. Many offspring. Mom and Dad smart, professional, great friends to one another. We were so lucky to be their children. I try to give back to the universe!!!
Substack seems to be scratching for traction and revenue in light of their impending round of new funding. Like Carol, I don't really see the point of notes and don't understand the "Restack" option that now appears with Like and Comment.
The good news is that I still like the writers I follow here and continue to learn from them daily. As long as that holds true, I can deal with the BS just like I do with FB while staying in touch with friends.
I don't even understand what Substack Notes is for. I am delighted with Substack and the communities that have been built here. If its not broke, don't fix it. I dropped out of Facebook years ago and have never used Twitter, that may have something to do with my incomprehension of the purpose of Substack Notes.
Being possibly tone deaf, I won't be using notes (whatever that/they may be). My preference is, as ever, to read substack articles in the email client on my phone each morning and/or evening. I don't use the substack app. In fact there are no social media apps installed on this device - it is a phone, and the battery can still hold a charge for days.
my "understanding" is that Notes will post all over Substack, which means that Comments will be platform-wide, but only if the writer wants that.
from my point of view, it's another reason to spend less time on FB (where I already spend a small fraction of the time I spent there say, five years ago. and for what it's worth, I can manage to feel a tiny bit more "responsible" with each incremental diminution of the time I spend on FB...
Today I see a new thing labeled "restack" next to the like and reply buttons. Wondering if this is related to Substack Notes. If it is, I don't like it because, not that anything I post here is profound, if restack means anything posted here can now be re-posted on social media like Twitter it means I would be on Twitter without ever choosing to use Twitter. But I could very well be completely off base because I am an IT Neanderthal.
Ot appears that "restack" is like "retweet," but it posts that on Notes. Nothing from Substack goes to Twitter since Muck declared war on Substack last week.
Maybe I’m just old or maybe just overwhelmed by the busyness of Notes since I never jumped on to facebook or Twitter. Substack is the closest to social media I subscribe too. But I find Notes to be very busy. And hard to get my bearings. Maybe because it’s new it’s being bombarded. I get it that writers are needing another promoting platform since Twitter was bought by a fascist but I wonder if notes could calm down a little. This probably doesn’t make sense to anyone but me. I guess I just don’t want it to turn into another Facebook chatty gossip column. Feel free to tell me I’m wrong because I could be😹
the one recent development on Substack I really do NOT like is the fact that many of the newsletters I really enjoy on a semi-regular basis have radically added paywalls, even to just read posts.
a single subscription isn't exactly gonna break anyone (well, not me, at any rate), but MANY subscriptions gets to be EXPENSIVE. and there are MANY Substack people worth reading, which is probably the second most important reason I like it so much. obviously, the MOST important reason is everyone reading this...
I figure that it costs me nothing to think on the bright side. if Notes does, in fact, regress to something no better than Twitter, we're just basically in the same place we started. if it turns out to be a good thing (or even a SLIGHTLY good thing), we're all ahead of the game, right?
Well, maybe I'm out of the loop but I didn't get an email from Substack and I subscribe to a few newsletters (because it's important to support good writing). What am I missing??
I read it but I am not sure I even understand the point of Notes !!
Sounds redundant but maybe I am missing how exactly it will expand Substack. Also, hate it when people mess too early with a good thing!!!
BTW, got you another nephew yesterday- gave him a gift subscription. He lives in Nashville. A professor at Vanderbilt.
Wild and crazy with 3 wild and crazy kids and a grounding, smart wife. Only 18 more nephews, 19 nieces to go.
Thanks Carol. You have an interesting family.

exactly the way I feel....

Of kindred spirit... Dropped FB years ago. Never used Twitter. I can comfortably ignore Substack Notes. Enough already!
I’ve followed the same social media path. As a subscriber,I never got the memo about Substack Notes. So perhaps that is telling…
If I wanted to participate in an electronic cockfight, I'd do so. It's not why I'm here.

Why Notes when you got Comments?
Exactly.
my "understanding" is that Notes will post all over Substack, which means that Comments will be platform-wide, but only if the writer wants that.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Muck's temper tantrum. Thank you for the reply!
fuck him already.
another legend in his own mind.
BOR-ING.
Brian Cox does it way better.
or I suppose I should say "did?"
DITTO ! I am not curious about what "restack" means. Enough already.
I’m also an IT Neanderthal. So if I post here does it automatically post on Substack Notes? Or does that take another step of clicking on Restack ?
What you post here stays here, unless someone thinks it's so good that Substack World should see it.
As someone else said - "Aint broke? Dont fix it"! I never "did" Facebook or Twitter - not interested.
Substack suits me just fine.
Just checked and at least some writers have ID for their page showing.
That's the problem! SOME do and the rest don't.
Never got the memo, don’t care. I’m not going down that rabbit hole anyway.

And I would like to introduce you to my oldest cat Tommy. AKA Tommy 1 Thumb in my avatar photo. He’s a polydactyl but only one paw.
he seems remarkably self-possessed, Karen. but he probably gets it from his mom.
Like mother like son
I figure that it costs me nothing to think on the bright side. if Notes does, in fact, regress to something no better than Twitter, we're just basically in the same place we started. if it turns out to be a good thing (or even a SLIGHTLY good thing), we're all ahead of the game, right?
A group of Substackers that I also subscribe to (I’ve known one of them for years) has called Notes the Twitter Killer. I hope they’re right.
Probably not. There aren't millions of people here on Substack. I jut hope Notes isn't a substack killer.

Nothing that I saw when I took part in their beta test, unless you're looking for a new way to lose your valuable time.
