this is completely unrelated to this topic (maybe I should wait for the appropriate post, which WILL come), but (lest I forget) I wanted to call everyone's attention to it because it's an enormously impressive account of the pretty insane balancing act that's been going on in Israel for at least 50 years before there actually WAS an Israel. it's also a celebration of the Israel that was promised by the best of its founders and despised by another faction. needless to say, that faction is the one in charge. like most Jewish things, it's very complicated and full of self-contradiction. and, like most Jewish things, it is (to borrow a phrase from Ford Madox Ford) "the saddest story I have ever heard." I pray there's no paywall. if there is, this story is worth paying for.

Paywall, but if you haven't read anything from Harper's, it is one of two free articles you can read. I saved it to read later - it's a bit long.

it IS very long, but it's dealing with stuff that's COMPLICATED.

It is long and complicated but well worth the read. I'm going to read it again and take notes. Thanks for sharing this.
