Somehow, this reminder of the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri seems apt, after President Biden's stirring speech last night calling out Maga Republicans for what they are.
We now have to fight fascism at home, here in the U.S.A. Growing up, I would never have imagined it.
There is a victory ahead, a victory for freedom and democracy. If we can stick together.
How many carriers does it take to hold 680 airplanes? ( serious question) That is a great photo of all those planes. The logistics and accuracy it must have taken to get them all back to their respective carriers!!
An Essex class fleet carrier carreid 100 airplanes. there were 12 carriers in Third Fleet, so they probably each flew half their planes, with the better pilots for safety.
Thank you for this, TC. I love that you talked to men who were there, heard their stories & recorded them for history. My dad served in New Guinea as an aircraft mechanic & calibrating bomb sites. My aunt later told me that required a high security clearance, which i had never thought about, but makes sense. He talked little about it, except a story about needing to keep their tools in a bucket of water because tools on the ground got so hot they couldn't handle them. You make me more curious about the whole experience!

Pick your battles. Work hard. And win elections.
Yes to all!

TY for taking the time to respond. Just some incredible flying these guys did. Great respect for them.
Theodore White said he thought the Missouri was running itself during the ceremony because the whole crew was topside to witness the “proceedings.”

Love these stories, TC. My dad and his father were both in WWII, and my dad was Navy. Thanks for the story and the pics!
Eating canned peaches and getting a pair of oversized boot, an image of being rescued. The joy that makes freedom real. Sniffle. 👍
🤣🤣🤣
Great stories about some of our heroes! What wonderful memories for them. Thans for sharing.
