I did EXACTLY what you did. I recently resubscribed to WAPO when the opinion pieces started sounding real again, and today I quit forever. Jeff bezos is a fascist who is obeying in advance, and I refuse to support him.

Bozos isn't a fascist. He's just a wealthy coward with the morals of a rent boy.

Thanks. Tom, I unsubscribed to WAPO early last year and I'll probably unsubscribe to NYT soon, I'm content to get my news from Substack, especially now that we have Jim Acosta,. Paul Krugman, Jen Rubin, in addition to the already great Dan Rather - who needs to read 'trumpscum's daily lies.

This reality show sux ass, is there ever gonna be a commercial break ?

Seriously when will this stop and at what point ? Will there be anything left to save when it happens ?

Rampant diseases resurfacing from the 20th century, new 21st century diseases percolating with zero hope of vaccines, president felon, an unelected drug addict running the show, a drunk weekend fox news host heading the department of defense, an asshole x mtv show asshole in charge of transportation bringing a daily potential air crash…ooohh look at that. Now Trump's importing alleged big time pimps, the Tate Brothers, from Romania where they were indicted. This "official act" while convincing the magas that those coming across the southern border are doing all the crime. And the Tate Brothers get that pass because they are DEI white and because the technogarchs wanted Trump to spring them just as he did Russ Ulbrecht, the dark web drug dealer who got two life sentences for his "business". And did I mention that they're repulsive in every conceivable way. And they've landed in Florida near Trump's place where I hope they will stay and poison tourism the way they've poisoned the planet. How do you like him now, Franklin Graham, you withering nepo-preacher?

Gene Hackman was a splendid and righteous Everyman. I loved him in "Hoosiers." He got a reprieve after his heart problems decades ago, as 95 is a heck of a run. The circumstances of the deaths are puzzling indeed.

Every time Franklin Graham shows up in one of his paid commercials, I change the channel or turn the tv off.

As for the deaths of Gene Hackman and his lady friend, I see great potential for a future episode of Forensic Files. That two humans just happen to die about the same time is also very strange, especially combined with their dog being shut into a closet. Looking forward to more information once the investigation reaches a point that info can be made public.

Now they are reporting that Hackman's wife's body had started to decompose, suggesting she may have died some time before him. The space heater in the bathroom could be significant, perhaps an electrocution. The pills, spilled but possibly none actually ingested. Hackman taking a fatal fall in the mudroom. The one dog in the closet is perhaps the most puzzling. Sorry they are gone this way.

Regarding "from the Department of the cruelty is the damn point":

We know there is an uptick in the numbers of militia forming up around the country, but there's good reason to eye those with dark suspicion. It would be nice to think a group that would not fire on peaceful protestors and would uphold the Constitution might remain in close and active contact once expelled from our convulsing military. The likelihood is high many of them have families and homes within the vicinity of each other so helping others in their situations find new housing off the base would be a first step. It would be a dreadful shame if these highly trained and patriotic Americans did not now form up into a volunteer militia to preserve their readiness. That's a volunteer militia I could whole heartedly support without reserve (pun).

On Gene Hackman - who locks their dog in a closet, even before committing suicide? I feel like if the authorities don't find something more on this they aren't trying. Of course, there's a reason the neighbor called for a wellness check and hopefully one can assume that's already been explored.

Back during COVID I was told I paid so much attention to it I was "obsessed"--in my defense, I was a medical laboratory technologist working in a huge urban medical center right before my retirement and COVID coincided. Pandemics had been something I'd learned about in school, and now it was happening REAL TIME.

Anyhow, I recall the dismissive comments that COVID was "like the flu" and "flu kills people". TRUE on the morbidity. If we have no flu vax next fall, how will they spin it? I really don't need to see the meat truck morgues outside of the hospital again.

Part of me says GO AHEAD AND NOT VAX , THEN DIE! But then I recall years working in the pediatric oncology department. Childhood leukemia has excellent cure rates--as long as those kids don't catch a virus. I've had the good fortune to work along some phenomenal physicians over my career, and hands down, the best of the best are peds onc doctors. How this all must weigh on them!!

I disagree with the idea that WaPo has "nothing of value" left. I have long ignored its coverage of the political scene in the US. I can get that from a variety of other things I read, including Substack. But it still has excellent coverage of a whole lot of other things going on in the world, and has done a lot of pushing back against trump and elmo of late as well. For the latter, I'm adopting a "wait and see" attitude. Much will depend on how the EDITORIAL board impinges on the NEWSROOM.

I'm fascinated with the idea of op-eds opposing personal liberty or the free market. How many op-eds have there BEEN proposing that we should have less liberty or that we should switch to socialism? I probably wouldn't have read those anyway. If the Post in both its editorials and its news starts arguing that the country is run by the Deep State or that the CIA hatched 1/6 or that bans on Muslims are OK, or starts endorsing trump's known lies (even Macron had to fact check him) I'll reconsider.

On a plus note, I want to thank you for keeping your posts to prose. As of noon this morning, posts in my inbox included 3 and a half HOURS of assorted substackers talking to assorted other people. (I didn't count those who also included a transcript). This count, btw, doesn't include the numerous "live" announcements in my notifications, just the ones that made it to "was live" and separately posted.

I didn't really sign up for alt-YouTube when I joined Substack. I'm happy for a post to recount the results of an interview. But I don't need the ums and ers and the forays into back scratching that such videos involve.

According to YLE "Your Local Epidemiologist" the advisory committee is postponed or currently canceled "to allow for comment" where they have already actually had weeks already to open for comment and still haven't done so. She also says to prepare for the disinformation of labeling scientific expertise as a conflict of interest, and that this advisory group has been considered the gold standard for transparency about, and thus lack of, conflict of interest. I got the flu shot yesterday in one arm, and a covid booster in the other. Slightly sore, but I'll live. And that's the point.

From the department of "you scumbag Russian traitor" to quote a well known thinker, people here should watch this discussion which is an hour and twenty minutes long and yet so fascinating and meaty I cannot actually pull out any one or two sections to specifically recommend.
