So, earlier this week, a new series of channels showed up on my DirectTV - MGM: MGM+ and a few others, with MGM in their name. The MGM channel used to be OK - good movies (yes), but with commercials (no!). Then Amazon bought MGM. And announced some streamer channels. But they have put the streamers on TV also!
You know how I say there aren’t any movies to watch on cable? Well, with these MGM channels, that showed up last week, I have now downloaded 20 movies to watch.
OK, the newest is 2000. But I’ve told you why Hollywood can’t make good movies anymore. These are all good. And most are a lot older than 2000. Back when good movies actually showed up.
This weekend hasn’t been particularly easy (more on that when I can write something that won’t be completely negated 10 minutes after I post it). Tonight was the end of two days I hope I never go through again. I needed some escape.
Fortunately, last Tuesday, I recorded “To Catch A Thief” starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, directed by Hitchcock - one of his superb 50s thrillers. I haven’t watched it in long enough that it was almost “new,” except each scene I went “Oh yeah.”
What’s not to like? Cary Grant! Grace Kelly (no wonder she became the Princess of Monaco)! ASlfred Hitchock! The South of France - is there a more beautiful piece of real estate on the planet (no wonder my oldest friend David Faris loved to go there)? Not to mention Le Grande Corniche! The Cote d’Azur! Cannes in the 50s!
And a really cool story. Perfect.
There’s nothing like a really good movie to cure what ails you.
And as a result of this, I have decided to answer the requests of some of the TAFM crowd, and show you the screenplay that sold the first week it was out (and never got made), which I realized watching “To Catch A Thief” was influenced by my love of that movie.
I’m going to present it as a Saturday Afternoon At The Movies Serial.
Coming next: “Permanent Interests.”

Hitchcock movies are my favorites. North by Northwest and Rear Window to name a few. The photography, human expression and emotion, and the subtleties that speak so loudly are amazing. Most movies today scream at us with violence, sex and stupidity. I am looking forward to reading your screenplay. I am sorry to hear about your difficult days Tom. Please take care and know how much we all care.
Hope you still have cat comfort, hang on for dear life, sanity, or whatever you can grab on to…
