In the 1970s and '80s I often tried to explain to men that women wanted to be able to walk home from the bus stop without having to cross the street or duck into someone else's doorway if we heard footsteps behind us.

Sadly, I think you nailed it regarding priorities.

I have never forgotten that. It was so true, and in many places it still is.
