According to Abigail Tucker, the author of “The Lion in the Living Room: How House Cats Tamed Us And Took Over The World,” the house cat is the one domesticated animal that serves no economic purpose.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 What a felicitous transition from 6 black robes to TC's melange of kitties. Phantom is my kind of spy on the Court's supremacists. I like the new furniture, too. That multi-colored spread on your bed is a hit show! TC you have treated us to a wonderful display. HAPPY DAY!
I mostly pay little attention to cats, as I'm a dog guy, accompanied in life by Natalie the Border Collie. But I loved this post, partly because of the evolutionary history, and partly for the photos of each in its favorite resting place. They are a good bunch.
Always love the cat updates! I’m glad they have adapted… although I’m certain they still hold a grudge to the changes. There’s Lots of feline love in your house! Revel in it! ❤️
We had cats for many years, but 10 years ago after the last of the cats had departed, we adopted a dog.
She was a one year old Tibetan Spaniel. And a rescue. And likely abused. She was fucking nuts for the first two years and honest to god was a strain on our marriage. After the first two weeks I wanted to take her back. Hubs was already in love with her and refused. She would helicopter on the leash when we took her out for a walk. She hates other dogs and most humans. She barks at any perceived threat. But she eventually started coming around to humans. And started to calm down with age. She’s totally devoted to us and is really a dream indoor dog.
Fast forward 5 years and We’ve trained her to use a pad and we stopped taking her for walks.. Everyone is happier.
We have found a combo of benedryl and CBd oil calms her down a lot. She’s a good little dog and constant source of amusement and companionship.
a neighbor of mine has a small dog with similar issues. the vet prescribed Prozac (something I've been hearing about for over 20 years) and it helps a LOT, although I still find her pretty nasty.
luckily, all six of my dogs have been very adept, socially. Kasha (one of my first dyad of sisters) had a habit of responding to any new dog by laying down and showing her belly, which obviously indicated that she had no interest in fighting. the second two, Meg and Jo (Rochelle supplied the "Little Women" names based on their personalities) were mother and daughter ad very occasionally, Meg would get angry with a strange new dog. these two are incredibly friendly with other dogs and all people (especially kids), but Daisy can be very unkind to Jubal if she thinks he's getting more of anything than she's getting...the kitchen can sometimes feel like a battlefield. in exactly 20 days (July 22), Jubal will be 14, so he can be a little crotchety.
One of the cats we lost last year was named Abigail, so she would appreciate Ms. Tucker, although she would say that she served the important economic purpose of making sure we budgeted properly to feed her and her brother.
Job creators. Who would thought. Cats also have forever claims on secure wealth or poverty. They survive of our good graces, begrudgingly, or otherwise. You take care of the nut, well put the dividends to appropriate use.
I started reading your post and at first thought you snuck in and took pictures of my cat home. (I started to say house but thought better of it). Then I realized it was your pride not mine. They are beautiful and looking pretty comfortable.
Noted it was "my" experience I was referring to. You're a *cat person*, I'm not. (Nothing against them, just never had a cat until I remarried years ago, and my wife moved in with 3 cats in tow.) My observation was based on the fact that cats fail to acknowledge the existence of non-cat people in the first place. :-D
I wasn't actually arguing. My cats do a numbr of "ignoring" acts, and they aren't assholes for doing so. It's true cats will ignore non-"cat people". They figure, why invest in a dry hole?
Lol! My "innies" (Spanx and Judy) have adjusted to life without their dad...finally. The three firmly ensconced "outies" are a bit discombobulated by the appearance of a MUCH younger (don't know the gender) who is begging for acceptance. So far, so good.

There is still some danger in stroking a tiger surrogate, as my Lulu proved this morning with a swipe to my wrist. Thankfully, less maiming than a swipe from the real thing…
I don't feel lonely in disagreeing with Abigail Tucker's opinion that "the house cat is the one domesticated animal that serves no economic purpose."
My late companion Squeaky kept several abodes, their outbuildings and immediate surroundings completely rodent free for many years. She would even gift me the results by depositing dead mice and rats upon the floor near her food bowl in what seemed almost transactional offerings.
I'm pretty sure that for centuries all sorts of commercial endeavors such as farmers, bakers, warehousers to ship captains have appreciated the efforts of little lions and tigers to protect them from the commercial risk of having their grains and foodstuffs plundered by plethora of pests.
The book goes into this. It turns out that cats as vermin controllers were not as successful or widespread as has been credited. They have been good at it anecdotally (as you demonstrate), but new evidence that plague is not spread by rats carrying fleas changes the story that Europe suffered the plague because of the Catholic Church's "war on witches' familiars" (which couldn't come close to wiping out the feral population). Like I said, the book is a "thought provoker."
They keep my vet, and various commercial entities (Fancy Feast, Chewy, PetSmart) in business it seems. As they get older, the price goes up. But doesn’t it for us as well…. And my Lulu is a terror for any roach that wonders by.

That and the afghan beneath it were made by Jurate.
Oh, Jurate, that spread is beautiful.
There is a forever Jurate bouquet in the sky, lovely lady.
How especially comforting that you have a beautiful afghan that she made herself. <3
Thanks for the update. Cats, chickens, dogs on boats- all signs that there is normal hiding in plain sight.

And obviously has found her true "forever" home!
Yes indeed Maggie! I adore this little dog. It took a while, but wouldn’t trade her.
Strange, but I've always kind of had a leaning for the "underdogs" whether its dogs or any other animal. You know what I mean, I'm sure.
a LOT of people feel the same way.

Thanks for sharing about your canine family! Yeah- we tried SO many things over the years and she’s so stubborn nothing works!
We finally got on a combo of Benadryl and CBd oil. It takes the edge off and helps keep her calmer.

Good show, TC. Good show.
Lovely lions. Is that a poster in back of Sebastian from “The Terror Within”? Great message to go along with these beauties.
Yes it is. "The Terror Within - It Wants To Get Out!"
Thanks Tom. I had a Lion in My Kitchen this morning. Bob tail Luna had jumped over the
baby gate at back door and was exploring the house. He
went right past 17 yr old
Sadie dog, ensconced on her
ortho bed and joined me for
coffee. 😉 No. Sadie watched
with interest as I herded him
back outside. She and he have developed a lase fare
relationship. Tippy, the little
orphan that's not so little any
more, is another likely home
invader.🤣❤

Cats never make nor accept apologies, in my experience. Just like certain people. The difference being the cats aren't assholes because of it.
I dunno. My cats seem to accept my many apologies.

Ha! I should've had a cat as an investment advisor on a couple of occasions, I guess.

Thank you for sharing your pride with us. Each one is magnificent.
Peaceable kingdom. ❤️
Thanks for sharing your family picture! My Tigger is enough to keep me busy and entertained. Give them an ear rub from us.
