This is wonderful. And I can't resist adding a couple of things.
One is that McKay Coppins went all in on Rmoney's BS. Which version of Mitt is this? The one who's pro-choice, minimally pro-choice, or anti-choice? Pro-health care or anti-health care? That he now presents himself as a man of principle is akin to Barry Goldwater now being h…

One is that McKay Coppins went all in on Rmoney's BS. Which version of Mitt is this? The one who's pro-choice, minimally pro-choice, or anti-choice? Pro-health care or anti-health care? That he now presents himself as a man of principle is akin to Barry Goldwater now being held up as a liberal because he didn't like the theocrats (but he went along with them, too).
Another is this: had Rmoney had an ounce of principle, he would have left the party. Period. He could have gotten Democrats to let him chair a committee where he could have had some fun, and he could have said, I am not voting with you on things I disagree with. End of discussion. He would have been welcome. He would have allied with the likes of Manchin and Sinema, but he also would have split with them on some things, I bet.
And I would favor the Toby Ziegler bet from The West Wing--all the money in my pockets vs. all the money in your pockets--that he isn't running again because he knows he'll lose in the primary.
But I have a couple of indictments to share.
One is that while I admire Stuart Stevens for saying that the republican party has become a disaster and he was wrong to help it, he still thinks Rmoney was a decent candidate for him to try to elect in 2012. Buffalo bagels.
Another is of the DC political media, 99.44% of whom abet treason. In The Washington Post, Dan Balz referred to him as "the highest-achieving Mormon pollitician of his time." Harry Reid might have disagreed. But Reid was never popular with the DC media because he didn't court them and had nothing to do with them. The way they are treating Rmoney today, it is obvious that he has leaked like a sieve to them (an example of this sort of thing: Elizabeth Warren has no use for them, either, and they have done nothing to help her in connection with the attacks against her from the right, but when Pol Potbelly attacked Bob Corker, who sucked up to them, they were hailing Corker as the greatest statesman this side of Gladstone).
The Press Corpse has a lot to answer for. And if they keep it up, they'll be able to give their answers from the other side of the bars in the local jail, before they're shipped off to the "FEMA camps."
I agree completely. But this is a special case because they are now holding a pathological liar up as the savior of the republican party. My friend Sally Denton once wrote a piece about Rmoney seeing himself as "the man on the white horse," which comes out of Mormonism. He does, and I am convinced that he has leaked enough that the media are happy to encourage him.
