If memory serves, there's a fundraiser for several senators that Robert Hubbell and Adam Schiff are co-hosting on the evening of August 14th. Among those senators are Colin Allred, so I HAD to sign up!

I love your references to old sailing ships and the sails that used the wind to power them! My Dad had books with all the different types of ships, how many masts each type had and what the sails were called, depending on where they were positioned on the mast. Which sails to raise or furl, depending on how the wind was blowing and from what direction. Those were brave sailors doing that work!

How cool to know all that. A real sea dog

Just someone who read all the Horatio Hornblower novels.

Missed them, sad to say.

They're still available.

Won’t live long enough to read what I have stacked up now. Substacks come first. You and Greg Olear first if I can

I like being in that company. Greg's one of my favorites to read, and he also reads me.

I missed the Hornblower novels but later in life discovered Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin novels -- which I may start rereading after I've reread LORD OF THE RINGS, which won't happen till I get this editing job done: soon! (A SEA OF WORDS is a great concordance to the Aubrey-Maturin books. I relied on it heavily till I was into the 3rd volume, by which time I knew the rigging so well I no longer needed it. The Hornblower saga is close enough in time that it should come in handy there too.)

Yes, O'Brien's books are great. I also like the movie Master and Commander, which really worked to get being aboard an 18th century warship right.

YouTube 1800’s fishing ship videos are first hand views of raw courage. Cannery videos linked to cod fishing are eye opening as well.

I don't trust polls, but these results are encouraging.

The good thing about these polls is that Dem Senators aren't often in situations where a gaff or misstep of some kind can derail their campaigns. They can run on their records, work ethic, and aspirations for their states and the country.

Here in Michigan where our primary is tomorrow, Elissa Slotkin's ads have played to the emotions and been effective. The DeVos monied candidate Mike Rogers (not a crazy republican) has been damaged by a primary opponent's dark ads about him. Just another instance of the magas canniblaizing their party because Rogers was popular here when he was in the House. I'm going easy on Rogers because I respect him for not jumping into the brakeless maga bus when it would have benefited him to do so.

Thanks for repeating that important polling data here on those critical Senate races! I can sometimes lose that thread amongst all of the Trumpist MAGA-wrestling mudslinging at the national ticket level.

Good news. I'll feel better when I see some good numbers for Tester in MT.

Finally it's FUN to be a Democrat! As long as we keep putting our backs into it.

Great news! I've been donating a significant amount to Gallego for quite a while now, and to Rosen just this past week. Any news on Tester? (Another one of my "recipients".) He's marvelous!

As Simon said, no worthwhile poll to check.

Tester is one of my recipients too. I've got friends in Montana -- and one of them knows Ryan Busse in real life! Busse wrote the excellent whistle-blowing book on the gun industry/lobby: GUNFIGHT: My Battle Against the Industry That Radicalized America -- and he's running for MT governor.

WOW! So Montana might join the 21st century?!

Who knows, it might even elect someone who actually lives there as governor! Some Montanans are working on it for sure.

Very encouraging news. Pennsylvania has a history of foreign 'interlopers' like Dr. Oz and McCormick trying to pull off they are local folks. My state doesn't buy it!! Go Bob Casey!! And everyone else running this year!!
