Thanks for posting this for us, Tom. The so-called mainstream media may finally have painted themselves into a corner from which they can't escape. Excuse me while I snicker.
I heard Michael Barbaro making a case for the dangers of the backroom machinations on his podcast, and read about half of the "smoke filled room" op/ed piece in the NYT flogging this interpretation. I was a little shocked at how quickly they had polished their take. I makes me wonder how long corporate media can continue to undercut the Democrats like this before they start losing credibility with a wider swath of liberal readers. I don't think it would be a bad idea for the Democrats to bring this question up themselves with their constituents. Maybe Elizabeth Warren has a plan for that.
Thank you, Jim, I've given up on both broadcast and print media - this is the only area I long to go back - back to when you could trust the news you got was REAL and not twisted beyond belief to fit corporate needs. Today's new is strictly for entertainment.
When I heard pundits calling the process undemocratic, I laughed out loud. (I like to think I'm channeling my inner Kamala Harris.) The mainstream media and other elites were the ones pushing the undemocratic agenda to dump Biden, skip over Harris, and have a free-for-all. I'm taking a Kamala Harris quote out of context (it was about Project 2025) but it fits here: "Can you believe they put that in writing?"
Why would anyone even give credence to the NYT? Along those lines it's nice we upended MSM. I read somewhere we were being called Blue Maga because we were solidified in our support for Harris. I have to thank AOC because she was sounding the alarm that these un-named Dems didn't want Kamala. For any Dems to be whispering about her gender or race seriously angers me. There will be enough time to ostracize these "elites". But for now let's fight like we landed on the beach and get Kamala to the finish line.
The Supreme Court has told us that money = speech. The huge number of donations, many from first-time donors, spoke. Fellow Democrats spoke and endorsed. The delegates are firmly for Kamala. She masterfully dominated in the aftermath of Biden's announcement and endorsement. In absence of an actual ballot, what's undemocratic about that?
100%, Tom! The quick action by WE the PEOPLE slammed the door in the faces of those who were trying to usher her out. We thumbed our noses at them. And it wasn't just $ and endorsements, the tens of thousands who volunteered and the many thousands who registered to vote sent the secret wannabe puppeteers a message they could not ignore. Except of course, the NYT which can't seem to get anything right.
Ezra Klein was so much better before he got to The Times. Getting a column there, it seems, can ruin someone.
By the way, almost no one noticed that Bret Stephens felt the same way, and had no use for Biden but seemed willing to vote for him, but now says he doesn't think Trump would do the damage to democracy that he supposedly might. I sent a letter to the editor asking what colored his judgment.
Ezra Klein was already on my sh*tlist for pushing "Now & Then" (Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freeman's wonderful podcast) off Vox. Now he's sinking further down in the muck.
Some people, as they age, mellow, and some sour. Ezra is looking like the latter. About 20 years from now he’s going to be a subject of one of those retrospective essays in the Atlantic asking why the promise of his youth was never fulfilled.
This explains much. Before Vox, I had a fairly favorable impression of the guy, although it may have been partly because I sometimes conflated him with Ezra Levin of Indivisible.
The pundits insisting on an open convention -- WTH were they thinking, or smoking, or drinking? Fortunately President Biden, VP Harris, and we the people know what's at stake in this election, and so do just about every Democratic senator, representative, and governor in the country.
Totally correct. The would be king makers, big funders, and the chaos monkeys of the press didn’t have a chance. We picked Harris, and we are going to elect her president too. Just watch.
Watching big media having a collective mad (or sad) at their precious brokered convention/Democrats in disarray narrative being blown up by the people was the second-most satisfying thing about this week. About time those guys ate some crow. The elites might have shown the President the door, but it was the people who confirmed his successor in the race.
Yes, if the MSM wants mud wrestling, it's always available via the GOP these days. I was mostly encouraged to see the unions help launch Harris's campaign before the wingers got a chance to inject their usual sexism into the mix.
Thanks for a great piece Tom. I just think there's lots of russian and chinese mis/dis/lying info and videos emerging from the back waters of their many troll farms and "news" outlets and "reporters" purposely or stupidly carrying their water. I laugh out loud at the gopers crying about "lack of democracy and fraud". That hasn't seemed to bother them putting a convicted criminal at the top of their ticket and party. I've found Bill Kristol a little iffy the last few days along with some others at various "newspapers". So...keep doing the work. WE. ARE. NOT. GOING. BACK!
I have always liked Joe Biden despite his many flaws, and he gave a speech for the ages today. He’ll be remembered for centuries for doing what George Washington did - giving up power for the sake of the country. And I love Kamala Harris. She has a joyful laugh and she is a super intelligent prosecutor who will made Donald Trump squirm. Thanks for this writing today. You covered all bases. I had subscribed to NYT for years and dropped them this year when I realized they were lying about President Biden and pumping up Donald Trump.
President under pressure steps down, endorses his vice president to replace him on the ticket. The people react by donating many millions of dollars, signing up to register to vote by the tens of thousands, volunteering to help the campaign by the tens of thousands - sure as hell looks like real democracy in action to me..... But I don't work for the NY Times, so what the hell do I know.....

Just cancel the traitors.

Thank you for this TC.

WaPo is also looking a little shell-shocked these days. All those weeks of relentlessly dumping on the president seem to have worn them out.

I didn’t know that.
Bret Stephens is, was and always will be a pompous, unsmiling ass.
And those are his better qualities.
Ouch!
IMO, likely the 'judgment' issue is misfiring neurons.
Or something to do with pigments.
that was def my thought.
Bret Stephens has the amoral orange creature’s disaese, talks out of both sides of his mouth! Die hard repub! Whatever they stand for?
As I posted before, I first rage cleaned the house on Sunday afternoon. Sunday evening I sent a donation. Great article. Thanks.

Josh is always on the mark. It was you or Robert that made me subscibe.
Same! That and the Morning Memo by David Kurtz.

Spot on Josh ... Good one TC,
Thanks for a great piece Tom. I'm not allowed to read Kristol anymore,. since the Bulwark didn't like me saying he was still as dumb as he was 20 years ago.
LOVE it! I have recently purged my subscription to the Bulwark. It was making me cranky.
😅😅😅OMG Tom! You are the best!
Kristol is still a hard rightie and hasn't really changed his spots--he just hates
Trump. I think.
"mis/dis/lying info" Excellent!
Just an outstanding post by
Josh. I get his Back Channel
every day except weekends.
But you can go to TPM's
website and read his blogs.😁👍
