First, I wonder whether he would do a commercial. That would be interesting.

Second, I had the amusing thought that maybe he could invite J Divan Vance to go hunting?

This is about as big as Biden’s shrewd move in stepping aside when he did.

Have fun at your trials Donnie. At least you’ll get some sleep during them.

As a matter of fact, Nicolle made the astute observation that it was Biden's ultimate decision of putting country ahead of personal desire and party that set the permission level for this from Cheney. I think she's right.

Think about all the personal assaults and dirt MAGA and Donald threw Biden’s way. He never took the bait. Now that is my image of a hero. It’s our country to win or loose. Let’s win it back from the no-joy Party of Putin.

And along with it consider the whisper-whisper campaign in the MSM about his mental and physical fitness, overwhelmingly based on anonymous sources. I expect that bilge from the MAGAs. I didn't used to expect it from the press.

Susanna, neither did I but it is absolutely real. Knowing the character of media owners informs us who to trust and who to scoff at. Cable News is floundering. Good. Print media at the local level is too, not so good. We need to break up the conglomerates that dictate editorial policy and return independence to journalism

RE: Political Earthquake

You didn't mention the aftershock...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/liz-cheney-endorses-democrat-colin-allred-in-texas-senate-race-says-father-will-vote-for-kamala-harris/ar-AA1q8alH?ocid=BingNewsSer

I'm not very politically aligned with either of the Cheney's beyond their obvious idea of what's *American* and what isn't as far as the current overarching political situation goes. But I've come to respect - and yes, even 'like' - Liz Cheney since she stood up for our country against Trump and all the J6ers. And while I doubt there's much I'd like about Dick Cheney, I'm gonna' have to offer him my respect now as well.

All of which is to say that as an American, you may never know who your friends and allies are until not just you but our *country* needs them. So, we may be well advised to judge people a lot more based on their character - or lack thereof - than their preferred politics unless those politics are simply the straightforward promulgation of hate.

If we'd *all* learned this lesson sooner, there wouldn't be any Donald J. Trump to be concerned about now. It's too bad that until now it's taken the worst of times to bring out the best in us. If we make any changes to our politics when this ordeal subsides, that should be the very first one.

It's been touch-and-go, though -- for quite a while there, it looked like Trump and his shenanigans were putting us collectively into some sort of suspended animation. Memory was fading even of the 1/6 committee's brilliant performance and report. 2024 has finally woken us up -- and I'm giving President Biden and VP Harris huge credit for this: they've shown us, and continue to show us, what putting country first means and how to go about it.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. Dick Cheney is first and foremost an American, I have always seen that in him, sure he was a Reagan republican, so were a lot of others including me who liked how he helped bring about the end of the USSR. Again country over party, I'm a registered democrat now and have see the error of some of my former ways, so I support in any way I can the democratic ticket from top to bottom. The democrats are the only party speaking to the needs of our changing America, you don't have to be a democrat to see that, the DNC was loaded with republican speakers, who have legitimate conservative views, who have no place in the repugnantkin party, so they'll support Kamala and they are not ashamed of it. I get that, we can disagree on policy after we save our democracy. The only patriotic position to have today is to vote Blue! I joined the Lincoln Project as soon as it was founded, we used our money and skills to create ads that gutted the insipid orange turd. They still do. Do I think Cheney's endorsement will help, the answer is yes, it's going to take an entire nation of patriots to defeat this pestilence. I have never met either Cheney but I admired the fact that he stood up for his daughter and how she stood up for our democracy, so I wasn't surprised in the slightest. In VN I never asked any member of my ranger team if they were democrats or republicans, just if they would have my back as I did theirs. We can do this 💥

Donald is such a limp dick loser that Dick Cheney had no choice but to call him on his BS. Donald and his minions tripped all over his daughter. Project 2025 would eject his granddaughter who is in law school back into the kitchen. Give me a break. A guy who marries his high school sweetheart and keeps it going through thick and thin is not going to let a convicted rapist, felon, f***ing a**hole ruin us all. Still, I see Stewart Stevens as the only prominent Republican who shows any real remorse and contriteness for participating in "grooming" America to hate liberals, thereby clearing the runway for a takeoff by the Prince of Darkness and Hate. Cheney and so many sat like bobbleheads on dashboards nodding as Fox, Limbaugh, and their proteges demonized "the libs" rather than just liberal policies. The GOP has always believed a monied elite should run the country because average Joes weren't smart enough and would spend all "their" money. Now they behold the crowd Trump and the GOP hath wrought, one which makes liberals look like denizens of the the Oxford Union, with the congressional GOP looking like the skinny inept who have to let the big mean guy kick sand in their faces. Cheney and the old guard GOP have been the collective Dr. Frankenstein, and the orange punkass is their creation. We can be happy to see their votes go left, welcome them into the fold, but we must keep our backs to the wall and our knuckles bared because once magas are cleansed from the right, the "specialness" of the historical GOP will rise again. I share Linda MacDonald's finely honed skepticism.

Susan Burgess's avatar

Hi Dave.

Men in this instance means all of us. When I first heard this expression in typing class in the 8th grade I didn’t think its meaning had to do with gender but more like men on a chess board. The queen on a chess board is one of the ‘men’.

I’ve never liked adding the ‘and women’ or ‘he and she’ to statements that either one but not both will do. The word ‘men’ is included in both the words men and women.

Dave Conant - MO's avatar

That is the classic interpretation and usage Susan and you are quite correct. In our more literal time, at least for some people, it has to be spelled out, or we end up with the sad situation that "all men are created equal" is gender limited.
