Instead of spending money on trivial "things," I've been sending a small amount to Ukraine every month. It's a fund that supports food for its citizens. I'm sure there are other reputable agencies as well that would be delighted with any amount that anyone could share.
I've been doing the same through Razom, Ellen. I hope others are also doing the same. My sense of it is that there is a lot of individual and group support for these NGO's.
I'm sending to come-back-alive, protection gear for soldiers, but what matters to me is most of all that it is a trustworthy receiver, and it's good to hold the hand of Timothy Snyder.
Good morning, TC. I wrote this last night before I went to bed. I checked Twitter in the wee hours and learned Izyum had fallen. Thanks for all the extra details.
Details are good, Allen. I read your blog last night and will at some point get it to accept my comments Ukraine's economic picture appears dire, with the lives of millions on the ledge. Adam Tooze is an excellent source. I subscribe to his blog 'Chartbook', which TC recommended. Do you have anything more to say on that score? Thought to ask that question here as more will get your perspective here than they would elsewhere.
Putting together a G-7 consortium to ensure that Ukraine has a long-term line of credit in the amount of $400 billion should take less time than writing this comment and is of infinitely greater importance. Having accomplished so much more than expected it would be criminal to allow them to fail over what is political pocket change.
I found myself close to tears on hearing this news today. The world's democracies must continue to hold fast against Putin's tyranny and continue supporting Ukraine until Russia withdraws to the borders that were in place in 1991. I realize things can change. Heavy rain is passing through the country and will reach the eastern parts of Ukraine soon. It is currently 11:17pm there, and perhaps an hour later in the eastern area. I feel overwhelmed by hope that Putin will lose what he has begun, but that losing is still a ways to go, I fear. He told the world what matters to him when he said at the speech most did not follow, "Russia has lost nothing." My blood ran cold as I considered all the soldiers killed and the families left devasted not just by death but the constant lying and gaslighting. Supposedly elections are happening now for regional offices throughout Russia. Most of the opposition candidates are either in prison, exile, or dead. That is the form of governance Putin and his right wing want for the world. Just give that some serious thought. Sadly there are too many in the gop who bow to this guy and his wannabe dumba** follower. Voters must deal this movement a hard blow in the 2022 midterms in every state, for every office in which a gop candidate is on the ballot.
Great writing TC, this combination of battlefield success and the dire situation of the Ukrainian economy. Surprising the economic loss is not worse, Donbass is said to represent 2/3 of former Ukrainian economy. I guess it is a matter of how things are counted.
The importance of the flanks have been up since the battle of Cannae (year 70), but there does not seem to be any sign of strong and well trained reserves on the Russian sides; just the soft middle.
