Shogun is what got me interested in Japanese history and culture. The 1980 series was a gateway to the book, which I found much more fascinating than the miniseries. I was detached from my ship at Yokosuka in 1986 and took advantage of already being in Japan to see some of the nation and its historic sites, including two cities that were untouched by World War II, Kanazawa and Takayama, before I returned to the United States.
I have relentlessly avoided paying for streaming services but may have to make an exception for the new one. The trailers looked great and the TC Seal of Approval just about inks the deal.
What a treat!! Just what I needed! My 'christmas visit' turned into an unexpected series of mishaps, and I'm finding it more difficult than usual to physically make the transition back to my beloved Amsterdam!! Trying to give myself grace, these suggestions sound like just the perfect solution! Anyway, thank you for the tips ... I'd follow you anywhere! xx's
I’m happy to have someone whose “taste” I trust screen them for me. Our TV broke many years ago, coincidence during a nasty presidential election. We decided not to replace it until after the election, never did, and are much happier people for it!
Curation by picky, picky, picky people with a solid grounding in storytelling is a real gift. We're already devotees of "Feud" and "Shogun" -- and based on your rec, we'll give True Detective and Fargo another go (they didn't catch us on our first try, but we've been wrong before). Thanks!
The first True Detective was interesting. the next two weren't that great. this one revives the series. Jodie Foster is great in it. I've liked all five Fargo seasons, but it is an "acquired taste."
We're willing to give 'em a go. Meanwhile, we're just tickled pink to see that "Somebody Feed Phil" has a new season. A great antidote to present-day angst.
VClavell's Shogun was a mindstopper for me for getting me into the culture of the Samuiri and Japanjese history. I too was disappointed with 1980 miniseries. Will check F/X and Hulu. Agree with others: Worthwhile recommendation from the inside.
I love "Capote vs. The Swans." As I told my step-mother, it's terrible people being terrible to each other. (It's on FX, not HBO/MAX) I also liked Season one of ''The Irrational," Jesse L. Martin's return to TV. Fascinating. (Along that last word. Last week was the 10th anniversary of Nimoy's passing. It pisses me off to the nth degree that Shatner is still breathing) Yes, Jon Hamm's hamming it up in ''Fargo,'' was great.

It's streamed on Hulu which isn't that much.

I may have to break down and start watching the modern version of TV!
The good stuff is really good.
