From The New York Times Pitchbot:

Opinion | Why the best hope for America's future might be a military coup.

Depending on which military.

Expand full comment

Point, was imagining the American military saving the constitution from these clowns.

Unfortunately the Air Force is mostly run by Trump-loving Fundamentalists. Ditto the Special Operations Forces (Green Berets, Delta Force, SEALs, Air Commandos, etc.). So "which military" is actually an important question.

The police and the military are gung ho about Project 2025.

That's frightening.

Hahahaha hahahahaha for real.

This may not be necessary if congressional Democrats, the news media, and freelance pundits manage to act like all of this matters.

Please don't hold your breath, Susanna. I don't want to lose a major presence here. Besides, turning blue before you go is sooooo unseemly.

Expand full comment

I vote blue (like there's a choice?) but turning blue isn't part of the plan. OTOH, turning some states blue or bluer is a worthy goal. The English language can be very strange . . .

The Blue Man Group is really big in Las Vegas -- just sayin'

That would be refreshing and different.

Part of me is still Charlie Brown thinking things things are going to be different this time. The other part is Lucy holding the football.

TC, hats off to you for this blistering tour-de-force! Maya Angelou’s line, “When someone tells you who they are, believe them,” resonates as the perfect refrain here. This sharp, scathing, and absolutely unfiltered dissection of Trump’s potential “Cabinet of Chaos” could serve as the political litmus test for those still on the fence. You’ve crafted a compelling picture of what’s at stake: the wild, unsettling reality of an administration whose primary goal isn’t governance, but vengeance.

From Tom Homan’s brazen disregard for the law as “Border Czar” to Kristi Noem’s disastrous rise, you’ve painted a lineup that’s as chilling as it is grotesque. Each appointee seems to embody one of Trump’s worst impulses, and your biting commentary on them is truly fire and brimstone. The unraveling you foresee — hard-right ideologues clashing, chaos reigning supreme, and America’s democratic ideals in freefall — couldn’t be clearer. Bravo on capturing that creeping dread with such precision, leaving no stone unturned and no absurdity unchecked.

Here's to your words landing with the weight of a thousand gavel drops. Readers needed to hear this wake-up call — a fierce reminder to believe what’s plainly in sight. Absolutely masterful.

I see you listened to your editor ! 😂

Please tell me who is more conservative than Christian Nationalist Mike Johnson ??

Grateful Scott lost although not sure how much better he is than Thune ? I did call Scott’s office to say this constituent was not pleased he was obeying in advance !

I see Thune is open to recess appointments:

At first I couldn't believe that Hegseth had not washed his hands in 10 years. Then I found:

And driven solely by testosterone reflux and unwarranted self-regard. He doesn't want women in the military because they're only good for one thing and should not speak outside their homes and should veil themselves into near non-existence. A more rigid Trump, perhaps more like Trump's sire.

“Trump’s favorite fantasies, from mass deportations to steep tariffs, will very likely prove fairly unpopular when he actually tries to put them into practice.”

What makes anyone think dump will care how unpopular these fantasies are? What are we supposed to do, protest? What do you suppose will happen when we do?

As David Huffman said in "Firefox", "Holy Mother of God! " Matt Gaetz for AG - that was not on my bingo card, but why the hell not? This "administration" is going to make "Alice in Wonderland" look like the collected works of John Milton. As for Hegseth not washing his hands for 10 years, the ghost of Ignaz Semmelweis would like a few words..... This collection of misfits, zealots and assorted nut jobs is simply Trump's middle finger to our country and the traditions and government that far too many have taken for granted. I suspect after the next 2-4 years, many of the currently ignorant will have learned a bit more than they wanted about what happens when you vote in a fog of propaganda. I am waiting for the "revolution" to start eating its own, because that almost always happens. This is one of your best, though I wish you had better material to work with..... FWIW, there are hundreds of Democratic activists and lawyers already preparing for the legal battles ahead, and the general plan is to throw up a lawsuit, legal brief or injunction request for any funny stuff the 'children's caucus' trues to pull. We may lose many of the cases but not before we have slowed them down for many months. I thought Trump had learned from the mistakes from his first try, but obviously he learned nothing - or he has truly gone 'round the bend and is in his own fantasy world, completely divorced from reality. As to my concern about Ukraine, there are now reports that Ukraine is considering developing its own nuclear weapons to keep Putin at bay - and to top it off, a British military analyst said today that if Putin does conquer Ukraine, there will be a war in Europe. So much for Trump's "years of peace".....

Why aren't you noting in the very first para that many of these appointments have to be approved by the U.S. Senate? Trump and/or his henchmen like Stephen Millers are trying to own the libs in a big way. (Seriously: Matt Gaetz for AG?) Cabinet appointments have been defeated before. DON'T OBEY IN ADVANCE!!

What did Senator Thune agree to? Did he agree to accept recess appointments? Somehow I am sure he did, secretly. These appointments are why rump demanded that of the incoming Senate Majority Leader.

A little off topic, but every time I see DOGE, I verbally say it in my head as "dodgy". Defined as "dishonest, unreliable". Works for me.

This disintegration at the heart of Washington DC has a very familiar ring to it. There is continuing unfolding economic and political wreckage in GB and Northern Ireland in the wake of the hardest cutting off of ties with the postwar peace project EU implemented by PM Alexander aka ‘Boris’ Johnson. He and his present new wife are alleged Russian assets. The UK government sponsored report on his and others Russian collusion in Brexit has never been published.

With Trump’s talk of extreme tariffs against China I wonder how much of that is a directive from Putin in Moscow. As it stands China remains the senior military and political power in an uneasy alliance with Russia. We shall see🔥

Thanks for consolidating all of this information in one place and transitioning it with the commentary that it's due. My fear is that those who voted for TFG are rhapsodizing, rubbing their palms together in glee because the poop parade just keeps coming down the street and they don't have to do anything but watch from the sidelines as the new regime clashes in the street with those who actually do love democracy. Your timelines throughout seem right too because the ego and personality clashes will be early and will land in Wiles' office first and then TFG's. Once that static starts amidst the "retirements and resignations" of competent civil service workers, the national poopshow will delight the magas and our key adversaries, the latter delighting in watching a once great nation cannibalize itself. The destabilization will wreck the Market, international trade and treaties, and most forms of media. Bottomline: "To the ramparts!!!" Support the Blues; don't sing them. Dem governors just may hold this nation of passive thrillseekers together as they are creating a first line of resistance. I'm all in.
