I heard her say once in an interview…”I never sounded like the female singers. Never like Diana Ross or any of them. I realized I sounded like the boys. That’s when I realized rock-n-roll was my lane.”

There is no woman on earth that could work a pair of high heels like Tina Turner.

What a force of nature.

Safe passage, Tina.

Salud!

As far as high heels, while I don't think any woman should have to walk in those damn things, I have to say I think Nancy Pelosi did as well in them as Tina Turner. Well, partially metaphorically speaking perhaps.

"60 Minutes" did a piece on Tina several years back. I think she was living in Italy or France at the time. She was being meticulous about her health and had found personal peace at the end of her career. I was happy for her. Three of her short dance dresses are in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. She believed in reincarnation, so she may be back. Keep your eyes open for a ball of fire and get out of the way..

When it comes to you, Tina Turner, 'What has love got to do with it' -- EVERYTHING!

I have ALWAYS LOVED "River Deep, Mountain High" and have never understood why it "flopped." in fact, I love that whole album, despite the fact that its lack of success is said to have given Phil Spector a major breakdown. for the last twenty-some years, I've been kicking myself in the head for forgetting to ask Jack Nitzsche what the real story about that album was when he was around to tell it. there's usually a "real story" about these things...

David, I thought of you as I read Tina's obituary this morning in the Washington Post.

'At the long, nighttime recording sessions, Ms. Turner took off her sweat-drenched blouse and was wearing only her bra as she sang countless takes of the vocal track.'

“River Deep” begins on a plaintive, introspective note — “When I was a little girl, I had a rag doll” — before building to a frenzied climax: “Do I love you, my oh my? Oh baby, river deep, mountain high!”

'Rolling Stone later ranked “River Deep” No. 33 on the magazine’s list of the 500 greatest songs of the rock era. It became a hit in Europe but never caught on in the United States, reaching only No. 88 on the Billboard pop chart.'

“It was too black for the pop stations, and too pop for the black stations,” 'Ms. Turner noted in her autobiography.'

'Still, it marked a turning point for Ms. Turner: She realized she didn’t need Ike Turner to make an important record — and that she was a singer with a voice of her own.'

“You know why I will always love that song?” she told the Chicago Tribune. “People used to call me a dancer, not a singer. So when I got with Phil, I started charging ahead and he was like, ‘No, no, I just want you to sing.’ ”

Tina Turner is the soundtrack of my entire life, from the late 50’s on to right now. I can’t think of anyone I loved as much - except John Lennon. Her performance of Private Dancer brought the house to their feet. I still can’t get over her incredible performance in Rio (saw televised) to 180,000+ fans. My friends in Zurich tell me that she was beloved there, too, for her generous community support. Whenever I see a photograph of her I am filled with awe at her beauty, talent, and courage. Tina, you will always remain an inspiring person to me. I’m going to miss you so much. And, I can see why Jagger was intimidated. You left him in the dust. RIP. And, thank you Tom for your tribute! 💕💕💕💕

Nutbush City Limits is my earliest memory of Tina Turner (with Ike) on some TV variety show.

A much stronger one is her part as The Acid Queen in The Who's movie Tommy (1975, I think) which was when we lads nicknamed her Thunderthighs.

My favourite though is her performance of We Don't Need Another Hero from the third Mad Max movie Beyond Thunderdome (1985). Such a powerful voice, wielded so well.

😢 There was a time, well into my adulthood, when I wanted to “grow up to be like Tina Turner”, to have that much ownership over my own life, even though hers came at a great cost. I loved and respected her so much.

I remember a performance on tv back in the late 70s or early 80s, possibly MTV. Cannot remember what they sang, but the featured performers were Tina Turner, Rod Stewart and Kim Carnes. At one point, the camera was on Kim Carnes in the wings, chest heaving, trying to catch her breath, while Rod and Tina were still jumping all over the scenery and singing away. Unforgettable.

Rest in power, sweet lady.

What about Ike? He was the last decent Republican president.

Not the same guy as Ike Turner.

That's right. I don't think Ike Turner was ever a WWII general, or president.

yeah, but the claim that Ike was one of the "inventors" of R&R is a very plausible one. I'm talking about "Delta 88."

He definitely was - he was at Sun Records "at the creation."

So admire what a survivor she was, gals, you don’t need the Ike Turners of the world. Of course, her energy could power the world for a spell…

She was incredible. I was not and am not a fan of rock music--it's fine, I'm not demanding that it be banned or anything like that--but I think of her great performance, too, in "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome."

I saw her in concert at Winterland too. What an absolutely amazing talent with her boundless energy and ability to connect with the audience. She will be missed, but her intense spirit and music live on. 💥

Thanks for sharing...What a memory! I never got to see her in concert (but we did see a very bad Vegas show with a Tina Turner impersonator who sounded more like Edward G Robinson...) But my god! What an inspiration! Such a powerhouse voice and personality. Got her tunes on right now.
