Ah, yes, the LONG version of the Chambers Brothers song…usually not heard on the AM stations back in the day, but on the only FM station on the island, YES! Turn it up, dude!
Yeah, the top two AM stations on Oahu played Top 40 bubble gum teeny bopper crap and what few hard rock stuff were the short 3 minute or less versions. There was one other AM station that played album tracks but it changed over to the Top 40 format in 1972, so FM radio was the way to go from then on…
There was also an FM station on Maui that played lots of rock and roll music, including whole albums without commercial interruptions. Unfortunately, the signal was weak and erratic, but on clear nights, you could pick up their signal on a good transistor radio.

And thank god for Tom Donohue at KMPX in San Francisco for inventing "underground radio." He was a very cool guy (I got to know him back then).
‘Big Daddy’ Tom Donahue was the best. I used to listen to him on KSAN in San Francisco. He introduced us to so much great music.
Yeah, KSAN came after the strike at KMPX - same collection of guilty parties. :-)

How very appropriate.
