From the Carter Center (via Axios): Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who campaigned for improved access to mental health care for much of her life, has been diagnosed with dementia, the Carter Center announced. Former President Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care
They have both led long, exemplary lives, filled with compassion and good deeds in service to others. May their remaining time continue to be filled with love given to each other and received from their admirers here and around the world.
Rosalyn and Jimmie Carter are the essence of good. They have lived their lives to make this world a better place. My heart goes out to them and hope they are comfortable and at peace as their lives transition. The positive impact they have made on so many lives will never be forgotten.
I'm so sorry to hear it. I have two sisters with dementia. It's bewildering for them and for everyone who loves them. May Jimmy and Rosalynn have all the peace and comfort they so deserve.
Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter did their best to live out their faith. People thought he was crazy for trying to be a faithful servant of his God while in the White House. Bless their hearts, their bodies are wearing out. May their family hear the angels sing a song of welcome when Jimmy and Rosalyn transition to heaven.
I’ve always liked the Carters. Decent people. Ambitious, sure, but ambitious to help others and not to help themselves. Cast my first vote in 1976 for Jimmy Carter. Proud of it. Didn’t much agree with the proto-neoliberal bent of some domestic policy choices but otherwise I think he left us, and large parts of the world, far better off than he found us.
Dementia sucks. Seems especially cruel when it happens to a smart person. And I’m certain Jimmy drew comfort from being able to share the day’s events with Roselyn. It’s just plain sad that he probably cannot now, and sad that he’s not able to help her in this transition.
All one can do is wish them the peace of God, which passeth all understanding.
Yes, it does break my heart. However, as I look back to how they and their lived Christianity were received in the White House versus how Ronald Reagan and his god-like homage was received, history has truly vindicated how true followers of The Way can change the world. They tried to make change through what is supposed to be the most powerful office in the world, but it was through their integrity in living out their ideals over the next decades that truly changed the world. They have been blessed to have lived such long, productive and, most of all, love-filled lives. WE have been blessed to have lived during their lifetimes and to have been witnesses to their love and faith.
Paying homage to the virtues of loving kindness and compassion, as expressed in the exemplary lives of the Carters in today's post, also emphasizes the significance of public communications that strengthen the bonds of democracy and promote the common good, benefits consistently delivered to readers of That's Another Fine Mess.
Heartbreaking, indeed. Wishing for them a smooth transition from this life, as close together as they can possibly be.

How many torches have these two carried?
I'm a angry non believer and don't pray, but I know both will pass within a month of the other.
As it should be. You have given so much more than most of the critters crawling on this planet.
May peace be with both of you.
They have been a national treasure, exemplary in every way. History will be kinder to them than many Americans have been.
The best humans to live in the White House. Models to whom we should all aspire.

The truly amazing marriage of the Carters should inspire us all!

The Carters continue to inspire! God bless them both.
Truly exemplary people - may the time they have left be rich and fulfilling, and may they be a blessing to all who know them.
