The boat battery bit ignores the fact that submarines have been powered by batteries for more than a century. Indeed, the prime contractor that makes them is called Electric Boat. This becomes less surprising when he admits he just learned the other day that Russia was in World War II.

Wow, I missed this last part about him learning a little history!

And I am tickled to hear of Electric Boat. By the way, Mister Trump, do diesel engines work underwater?

The problem in the USA is there are a whole passel of voters who also didn't know that Russia was in World War II, so trumpty dumbty appeals to them.

Well, thanks to Republican/Libertarian underfunding of public education for nearly five decades, you are quite right--there are hordes of USian children, young adults and even middle-aged adults who are "under-educated" and haven't read a thing since they left school 😢😯

Not just participating in WWII. Soviet dead in combat: estimates between 8 and 10 million. 24 million total, including civilians from bombs, disease, and starvation.

U.S. WWII dead: fewer than 500,000.

Please, please tell me that is sarcasm.

Dear God in Heaven, I knew Trump was not bright...but holy crap. He really didn't know Russia was a participant in WWII ??? That isn't merely "not bright" that is intellectually deficient.

Trump is flailing. He's never been in the position of losing his freedom.

He has spent a lifetime doing shady business deals and he's finally been called on it.

A cornered varmint, Trump will lash out in increasingly unhinged ways.

Unhinged and dangerous ways, I fear.

Vidal and Buckley. Still think old Bill was in the closet. Even one of his sons feels that way. After the 'debate,' on ABC where Buckley called him a homosexual pervert who wrote Myra Breckenridge, Paul Newman got up in his face and said, "if you ever call my friend that again, I'll punch you in the face."

Good for Mr. Newman

I've heard that Vidal quote before, but now it's got me thinking -- and mixing it up with George Orwell's immortal line from _1984_: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past." And with George Santayana's equally immortal line "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." To Vidal's "We learn nothing because we remember nothing" I might add "and we remember nothing because we are afraid of the past." Exhibit A might be the efforts of Ron DeSantis and others to whitewash U.S. history and shut down any discussion of racism, misogyny, the existence of non-straight people, etc.

I think there is a list of no's we can use for don-OLD:

NO hope

NO shame

NO class

NO sense

NO more money (as evidenced by his constant grifting)

NO legal legs to stand on

NO future vision (for himself, his family or the US)

We, as a nation, need to kick his flabby orange ass so badly in November, that he will go into orbit around his Earth Ii, until the FBI comes to cart said flabby orange ass off to the jail cell he so richly deserves.

Well, I know at least one cultist who is drinking the kool-aid. After her blast against Taylor Swift on FB today, she got blocked for another 30 days. (I keep her around just because I want to know what MAGAland is currently tossing around.) These folks are so totally gone, I cannot help but think of Jim Jones.

In a Times editorial, Thomas Edsall used the term “motivated ignorance” to explain his supporters who cling to him because the psychological consequences of seeing him clearly are too devastating. It’s what I think of as a Springtime for Hitler effect that worries me.

I believe Mr. Vidal's assessment of Americans is correct and so does Trump as he ratchets up his eternal grift, and people complaining about egg prices line up to buy his cult relics. Notice that those grift watches are not smart watches. And the prices vary because they're overstocks and overpriced.

I think of them as unholy relics. Price is no object to the faithful.

I wish we could afford to laugh at the absurdities spouted by Mango Mussolini -- but we don't dare. Until, God willing, after November.

Mr. Vidal will be proven wrong if he is by virtue of reminders like this one and those of Robert Hubbell, Heather Richardson and others who provide fact based commentaries daily and due to the work of the thousands of active workers on behalf of Harris-Walz and the rest of the Democratic ticket.

And we must remain grateful to Robert, Heather, and all who are working so hard and contributing funds to organizations that are getting out the vote in order to preserve our precious democracy.

Whether it was Barnum or Mencken (or both) who said "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people," they had a point. Consider how many of the American people blame the White House for not fixing inflation. Then take a look at most of the Republicans and consider that they were elected by "American people." Yes, I am very aware of gerrymandering, Citizens United, etc., etc., but the "American people" didn't squawk much about those things either.

Vidal also said something to the effect that we have one political party in America with two right wings and that he didn’t vote in elections because he “didn’t want to encourage them.” I wish Gore was around now to let loose with some scathing commentary on the Malignant Narcissist.

Expand full comment

I think -- OK, I *hope* -- that after 40+ years of Reaganomics/neoliberalism one of the political parties is inching toward the slightly left of center, even as the other takes a deep dive off the neo-Christo-fascist springboard. I do worry that the mostly white conservatives fleeing the wreck of the GOP will drag the Dems rightward or at least arrest the leftward creep, but Harris and Walz seem to have clear heads so I've got my fingers crossed.

He’s going to deny the election results. We know that. It’s the same play we’ve seen before, and this time, we have to be ready. There’s no sitting back and hoping for the best. We need rock-solid plans in every single state to shut down their illegal coup attempts. That means airtight legal teams, on-the-ground mobilization, and a strategy to combat the chaos they’re going to throw at us.

We can’t let them disrupt the vote with their hand-counting nonsense, their fake fraud claims, or their efforts to throw the results into question. We’ve seen the lengths they’re willing to go, so we have to be even more prepared—organized, focused, and relentless. Every vote needs to be counted, every law followed, and every attempt to undermine democracy called out for exactly what it is: treasonous.

Tom, I can't thank you enough for laying this out so clearly. My astonishment grows toward those who do not wish to see him for what he is. And that is the issue. They are not necessarily dyed-in-the-wool Republicans, they are bigots and hate-mongers and truth-ignorers. What does surprise me is that they will not see how much like despised authoritarians he and his ilk are, and want to be. Did they not read their history books? Or are they so enamored with the shock value of it all that they refuse to even entertain the notion that another Trump term would be totally disastrous for this country? And here is my biggest question...how can Christians align themselves with a man who believes himself above the god they believe in and pray to? Apparently they are forgetting their Bible lessons....

Have you not paid attention over the years to the likes of Carl McIntyre, Jerry Falwell, Franklin Graham, and other white evangelical preachers? The Bible (if they actually read it) trickles down to these people through their preachers, and most of them are still backing Trump. They'd be worshipping the Golden Calf if it showed up in their town.

I hope he's in prison before the year is over, let his jailers tell him about Kamala's inauguration when they bring him his jailhouse slop for his mid-day meal. Just like the people who entered a grave because of Covid, and his inept handling of it, will never again walk among us as free people, so too should he find the finality of his time in jail.

" (He has said he wants to sue David Muir - on what grounds is unclear)" It is probably that top secret law passed by Giuliani that says that anyone daring to contradict trump is subject to imprisonment for live or, if the perp does it twice, death. It's the same law that makes it absolutely clear that he can declassify documents by waving his hands over them.

And Chris Whosis dares to condemn "vudu." That in its perverted form is the main reason anyone wants anything to do with trump. I'm kinda surprised he isn't hawing golden pins to stick in Harris dolls.
