Information has dribbled out over the weekend about David DePape, the would-be assassin of Nanci Pelosi who stands charged of the attempted murder of her husband Paul.
I have immense admiration and respect for Nancy Pelosi. She has accomplished so much in an adversarial environment. She had demonstrated great courage throughout her career. And here is one my favorites:
Indeed! Tearing up what was both worthless and already showing her mettle against a would be tyrant who is still doing his thing. Courage is needed more than ever these days.
And of course don’t forget that was the State of The Union Address that he awarded Rush Limbaugh the Presidential Metal of Honor. Thank you Nancy for putting that where it belonged.
I am a member of the Nancy Pelosi Marching and Chowder Society, and I do think there is room for criticism. But there is no question about who is responsible for what happened the other night. I also think there is no question that no other Democrat comes closer to her as a possible successor as speaker. I just don't see it.
Like you, I think there is room for criticism in her seeming blindness to the lives and needs of working-class people. HOWEVER!!! And it's a big however. She is a genius. She is bold, fearless and astonishingly brilliant. I hope she has acolytes who are learning from her!
I don't mean to imply that she doesn't care about working people. I am sure she does. She just seems not to have a sense of what it's like for people who struggle every day just for food and a place to live. And the horrible fear of what will happen if they get sick or injured.
That said, she IA an absolutely masterful politician, and I can't see anyone on the horizon who can match her.
There was a note asking why "Likes" don't show. They do show, you can't see them. It's a substack thing. But if you refresh the page, they will show up. It's a software glitch.
I was particularly appalled, sickened, outraged...hell I was f**king mad that after "crime is terrible everywhere" [which is a lie] they immediately pivoted to homophobic slurs. I won't repeat them because they are beneath contempt; but, as others have said, the cruelty is the point.
Well, another super essay! Thanks TC. I had forgotten that book and movie! It feels like we're in a horror movie that just won't quit. I guess it will last for some time but not forever - more of us can show more courage to resist the destruction of the republic and democracy by stepping up and speaking out, and not letting our ballot be the only thing we do as a citizen.
Thank you, TC....for the insight into DePape and for the praise of Nancy. My favorite coffee cup: Nancy shaking her finger at Trump during a meeting. Iconic.
I do not think I’ve ever said this aloud because I felt no compunction to rain on Hilary’s parade at the time in 2016. I had a dark, sure feeling that she was going to win, but lose the presidency as electoral votes proved to be true. I also felt that she lost when she did not go really low and seize the moment to eliminate Trump when he stalked her on stage at the now frozen in time monent at their debate. I almost was embarrassed at my hedonistic reaction yelling at her from my viewing point to turn on his cheap theatric ass and vanquish him. Not ignore him but confront him, right there and then. Insist that he get the fuck over to his podium and tell him his stalking days are over and that she will use her last breath to defeat the bullying of the American people by the representative of a party who is no more than a failed businessman who will rape a nation for his own gain and have the brazen nerve to threaten an opponent in front of the televised nation. I don’t give a shit that it would have been a barroom brawl and against all decorum of debates. And I also would have blasted the moderator and network for allowing it. And then responding to what was sure to be a ridiculous comment from Trump, I would have spit on the floor and walked off the stage until order and security were restored to my liking.
And, afterwards, when I had regained my composure, I cried knowing that we had just taken a step down a long dark road.
And here we are. I thought of it again after the attack on the Pelosi home. And remembered how much I wished it would have been Nancy Pelosi or the likes of her that had been the candidate in 2016. Like I have always advocated, a girl or woman must not brook any nonsense when veiled or overt threats of male dominance are apparent. And specifically revised in 2022 as the rise of white male Christian nationalism terrorism is everywhere.
I am not having it. It’s a bag of gaseous stinking hot air.
Unite as a force for We the People. All of us this time. 🗽
I’m sure she was tied to that ridiculous Dem crap about going high when they go low. That only works when the opponent has any human characteristics. Not pond scum.
And, in this case, competence is the enemy. Not one republican can, or dare try, to match her ability and record of accomplishment. Liz Chaney (loathe to call her repub) is gaining ground. Lies, vitriol and threats are what republicans offer. And this is a close race. The locusts are swarming, with “burn it down” their mantra. Chump’s chant from the git go.
Throughout my working life, I believed that if I worked hard, became an expert in my field and "took care" of my employer, I would receive favorable treatment in return. For the most part, that turned out to be true, but I was lucky in that I became involved in a field that I really liked during it's early days when there were no barriers to entry. Most people are not so fortunate. I wonder if it isn't possible to allow others to have an experience similar to mine by lowering those barriers. This could be accomplished through reducing income stratification with a more benign tax policy, and making a qualifying education available at an affordable price through public investment and subsidy of sensible advanced education. Interestingly, both of these things are goals of the Biden administration.
Yes, I remember the novel. Nathaniel West isn’t in my pantheon, but I respect him for coining a phrase that lives behind his book. As for our speaker, how shattering is it to have your husband attacked because of you!? I lived in SF for a brief time, and I understand why those who live in one of the most beautiful cities on earth feel protected from ReThuglicans and Magas. Beauty casts a spell. But, I imagine the Pelosi family will now amp up their security measures. What a sad and terrifying time we live in. ❤️🤍💙
Nap time is now time for increased security. But Rupert and clones just yawn and continue their diatribe against the wife. Hey voters, the Dems have never, in my lifetime, promoted crime and violence. So if you republicans worried about rising crime vote for Dems, you can throw your bums out and decrease the crime rate instantly.

A precious moment in history. A woman with the courage to stand up to a tyrant.
That clip was a piece of art. Thank you.

I agree, she's not intimidated by anyone

That’s a great one Fern. Thank you!
You started the ball rolling, Karen. I just followed your lead. Thank you!

Once again, fellow members of the society, marching in step. :-)
For the record, I always thought she got a little too much credit for Obamacare at the expense of my man Harry Reid. :)

Well done TC.

The cruelty has ALWAYS been the point with magats

There's actually two - that one and the one in the cabinet room where she goes off on him in front of all his capos.
This is the result of careful planning and long term implementation. Make no mistake
The rationale behind this evil is not fully fathomable to decent people. Only the prognosticators understand; Hammer guy is just a useful tool/ fool
Indeed and they are legion
Don't mess with Nancy! She's a force of nature.

Woo - that is EXACTLY what I was yelling during the debate!

I congratulate you for having thought through that response to Trump's misbehaviour in the debate...! You should be in politics (perhaps you are).
Either way, thank you for your clear-headed character analysis.
Excellent. Locusts abound in my little town.

As you recall, that's the way things used to be.
Exactly so.
But republicans would see the middle class in hell before they would advocate for such
All we need to do is vote blue in '22. ;-)
And I believe one of the characters in “Locust” was named Homer Simpson.
Great read, TC, and thanks for the multiple back stories.
