This is so important!! Excellent analysis of the Florida textbook mirage. I have reposted it with the heading, "How Hitler would ban books in 2022"

P.S. I have some very nice Democratic friends who live in The Villages. Not my cup of tea though.

Here's a quote from the Vetting article where apparently DeSantis said: "'I mean, one of the criticisms was the parents couldn’t help their kids with the math homework,' he said at the Monday press conference in Jacksonville." Holy Moly!

So at least as to math, there's only one book company. And if I'm reading this right, Glenn Youngkin's Accelerate Learning (majority-owned by Carlyle Group) will be the one selling that book. To quote from the article: "He [Youngkin] pushed legislation very similar to that of Governor Ron DeSantis in Florida, which resulted in only one textbook company being approved for use in Florida. That company is Accelerate Learning, where The Carlyle Group purchased majority ownership under Glenn Youngkin’s leadership. The only reason it didn’t pass here in Virginia is because Senate Democrats rejected it."

Ahhh, where do I start? What I know is that the antics, posturing, and theater of DeSantis and Corcoran controlling, not governing, public education must not prevail. The fact that there is only one publisher K-12 approved by them is ghastly. Even more ghastly is that the specific examples given for rejection of other publishers is ignorant, unfounded, and insulting.

The beginning swell of teacher discontent over this is like nothing I’ve seen before. And I’ve listened to a lot of teachers over the years.

I’m considering a run for a school board seat this year. A decision had been made after a narrow loss in 2020 to support other candidates. But, sh*t happens. Like treason. And total marginalization of children through the common good of public education.

'PROHIBITED TOPICS - LIES, LIES, AND MORE LIES could also be titled, HOW THE AUTOCRATS DESTROY DEMOCRACY & EDUCATION for THEIR OWN PERSONAL POWER.

This piece by TC documents how the autocrats are taking a torch to education in America. Thank you TC.

'The Florida Education Association, the state’s largest teachers union, joined Democrats in calling for more transparency over the textbook decisions.'

“The state has an obligation to ensure that every child is getting the math instruction they need with the highest quality materials,” FEA president Andrew Spar said in a statement.

'DeSantis said he would be open to the state making public examples of the textbooks, but maintained that the content is considered “proprietary information” as publishers weigh possible appeals to the rejections.' (Politico) See link below

‘… schooling teaches people to interact with others and raises the benefits of civic participation, including voting and organizing. In the battle between democracy and dictatorship, democracy has a wide potential base of support but offers weak incentives to its defenders.

'Dictatorship provides stronger incentives to a narrower base. As education raises the benefits of civic engagement, it raises participation in support of a broad-based regime (democracy) relative to that in support of a narrow-based regime (dictatorship). This increases the likelihood of successful democratic revolutions against dictatorships and reduces that of successful anti-democratic coups.'

Back in the day, as a teacher I served on a textbook review committee. We specifically asked the school board not to select a certain textbook for classroom management reasons. The concepts were fine, but required more than one adult in the classroom to successfully accomplish the lessons. I had no teaching assistant, and the school board was not going to hire any either. How was I going to successfully teach math lessons using such material? The board chose that textbook, don’t you know! In 3 years, they selected different math textbooks. All kinds of stupid mandates are sent into the classroom that put teachers and students in no win situations. The CRT and SEL battles are the latest examples, which show that the crazies are the loudest people in the situation and they are dangerous.
