Just some info about Muskrat. Technically, he’s not a Boer or Afrikaner. Those are terms used for white South Africans of Dutch, German and French Huguenot descent who were the architects of the apartheid government. They commonly speak a Dutch derived language known as Afrikaans. Some Afrikaners like Charlize Theron and Breyten Breytenbach rejected the+whole apartheid system. In 1948, the Herstigte Nasionale Party came to power, took South Africa out of the Commonwealth, and imposed a harsh apartheid government in South Africa, which lasted until DeKlerk realized it could not last longer and bowed to the inevitable. Musk is of English and Scottish descent, and like some English speaking South Africans, adopted the prejudices and support for apartheid that Afrikaners had. Maye Musk’s father, Joshua Haldeman, was a member of the right wing populist Social Credit party that had a following in western Canada, and it was Haldeman who brought his wife and family to South Africa as he found it an ideal “white man’s” country. Around the late 19th century, the wealthy Cecil Rhodes instigated a war to have Britain add South Africa to its global empire. Paul Kruger and the Boers (rural farmers) weren’t enthusiastic about it and fought back. In order to prevent the Boers from getting resupplief from their homesteads, the British created a series of camps in which to confine the women and children that lived there. The conditions in the camps led to rampant disease and death. This led to many Afrikaners being hostile to South Africans of British ancestry, even though they both benefited from apartheid.
The people of mixed ancestry, including Indians (Coloured in SA vocabulary,) the Khoi people and Black South Africans didn’t fare well under either the Boer or British regimes, and the post 1948 apartheid government did not recognize Black South Africans as citizens. Black women and men had to carry a dompass with them at all times to establish their right to be in places like Johannesburg and Pretoria, which were white areas. During the latter years of South Africa, the white minority government created a series of sham republics which were intended to be homelands for different Black ethnic groups in South Africa, including the Xhosa, Zulu, and Shona peoples. They were arid and unproductive areas with no electrical and sewage systems and only South Africa recognized their “independence,” which was an effort to deny Black South Africans citizenship in their own nation. The fake nation of Bophuthatswana set up a resort called “Sun City,” and artists were often under great pressure to boycott appearances there. It provided gambling and other things not available under Reformed Christian dominated South Africa. One of the best books about that time period is the late Donald Woods’s book about the life and police murder of his friend Steve Biko. James Michener’s the Covenant provides a lot of information about South Africa in that era as well. It was largely written by Michener’s South African born researcher Errol Lincoln Uys.
Kathy, hello, Kathie here… I so appreciate the clarity and detail with which you describe everything in your post. My heart aches. My beloved husband was Black from Louisiana , a prince of a man, and we raised one of our four grandchildren, in college now, 19, Black, an incredible dancer and choreographer, handsome and charismatic while playing out his life path which is complex because of his beginning chapter… Social activist heart. Anyway… As an educator in elementary school near Stanford, several of my students were from South Africa and I remember when their parents came to class to present, the perspectives they told to us were jarring, to put it mildly. Everything you describe is helpful to know. The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know, but I keep trying. I’m three weeks younger than Tom, we discovered one day when exchanging remarks in the comment section after I described my father‘s work in aircraft design in Southern California… I’ll stop here but just want to say thank you. I aim that everything I learn influences the filter through which I look when there’s more to see as time moves along. Thanks again. ~Kathie
Excellent material and very accurate, Kathy. Elmo is an Afrikaans speaker. You can tell in his English accent. Maye and Errol Musk sound made for each other. Maybe if Errol hadn't impregnated his step-daughter and had to make her "an honest woman" they'd still be with each other as the "birds of a feather" they are.
Thank you, I remember some of this and the “creativity” of the power to screw the poor. Incredible that the cretins go to such lengths when racial purity is a cosmic joke. We all are mutts…
My uncle, Jay Rochlin, worked with Bob Dole to craft the ADA. Jay worked with AT&T / Bell in designing telephony for the hearing impaired and other challenges. When he joined Dole, he traveled the United States to talk to people with disabilities, to figure out what they needed most to make life easier.
He was most struck by paraplegic/quadriplegic football players, usually high school and college players whose lives had been permanently altered after a one second play on the grid iron. A bad hit. A slipping fall. An ardent football player in school and a committed spectator his entire life, Jay stopped enjoying the game after all the conversations and the pain he witnessed. He worked very hard to get the ADA to provide relief to the people who needed it the most.
Yesterday, 3/21/2025, SCOTUS held in a Clarence Thomas Opinion [ not sarcasm ] that the "KNOWING or intentional causation of injury or death by act or OMISSION necessarily
[deductively as a matter of federal law] involves the use of physical force even when the harm is caused by OMISSION". Caps added. See, Delegatti vs. U.S.A., SCOTUS Docket 23-825.
Synopsis: What is good for the Genovese Crime Family is good for the Orange Gang.
We really need at least a basic range of emoticons, not just the red heart… My like here means I heartily approve of and like what you’ve said here but a red heart doesn’t feel like the right way to convey that message. Anyway - Thank you for your post.
No problem Katherine H. Terhune; I call them "Acknowledgments".
FYI, on the above Comment, I was hoping my "Synopsis" in TC's Community might get some critical analysis. TC is never shy about saying what thinks & he is good on law as well as many other Topics.
I will be running by may possible use of 'Delegatti"in the right case by STEVE VLADEK's on a LIVE Event tomorrow Sunday 3/23 with Professor Joyce Vance.
Acknowledgments! Absolutely yes. Thank you for mentioning the event with Joyce Vance. I will look for it. She’s a treasure, right up there with HCR! Phenomenal that we have the Substack community for such stellar schooling! TC is off the charts as well, and one never knows what might pop up in the community. A lot to take in, but definitely worth it! Thanks again!
First, which Dumbass Bimbo? Was she friends with your first wife's mother? Is said mother still around?
I've been clued in to the CFR (2 CFR 200.344) about the ability of the government to cancel grants. Apart from not complying with the conditions of the grants there is a catchall: "to the extent authorized by law, if an award no longer effectuates the program goals or agency priorities."
Now, consider say a grant to Columbia Med school. Is the failure of Columbia to discipline protesters (leave aside the free speech aspects) a failure of the Med School to "effectuate the goals" of whatever program the grant was for? Has the agency itself determined that its priority over, say, the research being funded, is punishing protestors? Like so many executive orders, the en-masse cancelling of grants doesn't even remotely seem to have gone through this scrutiny as to each grant.
Similarly for revocation of security clearances. There is a PROCEDURE for such revocation, including a particular notice and a right to a hearing. Some of the individuals, like Biden, may not want to bother with a hearing: it is the revokee's decision whether to go that route. But the mass revocations of all lawyers in a firm? Did each one get a notice? Why didn't any of them request a hearing?
Those associates in the Big Law firms considering capitulating can surely find another job, not requiring a security clearance (which is only suspended, not revoked, until the hearing) until after the revocation has been cancelled. If I were at one of those firms, particularly as an associate, I'd scoot ASAP. Better, tell your partner that you intend to request one and have them FIRE you over it, so you can tide over with unemployment insurance.
I was interested in the judge who found "animus" in the DOD "rules" on trans military members. It seems to be something that allows the judge to tell the agency to go fuck themselves. Can it be used against an executive order?
I applaud Perkins for suing and hope that good law gets made as a result. Now, when trumP and the GOP are actively eating the face of the judicial branch, would be a good time to get something outrageous in front of the Extremes, because at least SOME of them must be reconsidering the idea of the unitary executive.
And if the Maladministration openly defies the Extremes? Democracy Docket has an interesting article on the power of the courts to appoint someone OTHER than the US Marshals to enforce a finding. It only applies to Civil Contempt, which has far fewer teeth in terms of punishment. But Civil Contempt cannot be pardoned.
Thanks Susan. So is there any way to effectuate the return of honesty in government and truth from Don the con or can we effectuate a quick exit off the stage for the top 4 ineffectual idiots? I shall read your link and hope for the effectuable best.
Hitting him in the pocketbook seems to be making HIM increase in blather; maybe he will drown in the blather. Donny doesn't seem to be bothered by economic losses because he figures he can always grift his followers for more. Too many hamberders seems the best hope for him.
Beautiful picture today TC, and an excellent column as well.
"We do not need to listen to the otherwise-unemployables from the shallow end of the white upper middle class, who call themselves “Democratic consultants.”" That doesn't go far enough; we need to actively not listen to the consultants who have cost us two winnable Presidential elections, both of which ended in Felon47 in an office he isn't qualified to clean, let alone fill.
There may be a few worth paying attention to, but I haven't seen or heard one whose advice makes me think "Wow, this will win us some elections even in 'Red' states!"
It will be interesting to see if the Boeing beancounters can even get a non-flying prototype done within the span of our lifetimes, and further to find out if it will outperform an A-10 or even the barely workable F-35. If Musky wanted to root out a few billion in waste, he'd put an end to that program and turn off the lights on his way out of the White House.
Down here with the busy earthworms in the grassroots, we are promoting a protest presence in the streets across the US on Saturday, April 5th. If the Turks, Serbs, and Hungarians can fill their streets to protest authoritarianism and corruption, can we do less? I'll be posting notices on the chatboards at the two colleges here in this town. Letting my reps know in case they don't get notice from some others. Doing a sundance in hopes the weather will cooperate. These protests will be more like spontaneous flash mobs than organized, get-a-permit protests. Fluid and raucous in public spaces, but nothing that invites clashes with badges. And wear sensible shoes.
(At my age, it will be the closest thing to the kind of party my parents would never let me attend.)
Hear hear! Your reporting that enforcement can be appointed to someone other than US Marshals is a vitally important fact, and I remember reading it awhile back, probably in something Marc Elias wrote fairly recently.
I’m sitting here thinking of January 20 – March 20, which was two days ago… Talk about being in a time warp! So when I said that Marc Elias wrote something recently, it’s sometime in the last two months…geesh. Thank you for your post.
Should the court appoint someone other than the US Marshals to serve a writ of apprehension, the choreography that might ensue with the Secret Service people could be awkward enough that someone gets hurt, although I understand that the SS must not interfere with the execution of such writs or arrest warrants. I hope that someone here can provide clarification.
I don’t know a lot, but I agree with what you’re saying here. Recently there was some department of peace and justice… I don’t remember the name… But I think local police joined FBI agents who accompanied the DOGE team that was demanding access… And then the security guards hired to protect the building and the staff of that department were told by DOGE that their contract would be revoked if they didn’t cooperate, so they “switched sides,” not in spirit, but they caved to the threat because it certainly appears the threat was very real. And the security guards were not in a position to counter a threat that their company’s contract would be revoked. Such a mess. People with no authority, barging around lawlessly… ugh. Let’s watch for clarifications.
Regarding the space nazi and his poor aptitude at succeeding, could it all come down to that pithy old saying: "wank, wank, money in the bank"?
I mean, consider the fact that he is so obviously experienced and excellent at fucking things up (think about buying Twitter for $44B then reducing its value to $9.8B; about how many SpaceX Starship launches have ended in "rapid unscheduled disassembly"; about how almost every Tesla Cybertruck is now undergoing the eighth recall in twelve months). Yet he is so bad at fucking that can't even lure a trophy girlfriend like Bezos, or contractually arrange brides as Trump has, but instead resorts to master bating into plastic containers for hired incubators to process into children. Why? Can't he do it? Or he just won't? Is it a physical problem - from too much drug usage? Or a mental issue - did he try it once and she laughed, and perhaps now requires images of black bottoms being spanked (who knows what goes on in that, or any, mind).
My point anyway, is that Elon Musk is just a very (not so) wealthy (now are you) wanker who may have paid several women to rent their reproductive systems but I seriously doubt he knows much about their tastes in music, could find a single one of their clitorises, or ever understand love.
Karen - Lots of my fellow RN advocates at our Town Hall meeting today! So Proud! I was an advocate and lobbyist for MNA back in the day. We RNs usually get immediate respect from legislators, especially when you tell them a story about the family just down the road from where they live, living in squalor, Mom shaking the cockroaches off the bottle before feeding the baby...
I agree MaryPat. RNs are instrumental in effecting positive change. We have earned respect as patient, and community advocates in their most vulnerable times. One of our great Oregon senators, Jeff Merkley is married to an RN. He has great perspective on healthcare.
I like Anusmouth Pantsload, I have been using Insipid orange turd ever since his lawyer referred to him as an orange turd and lord knows he's insipid. Two things: I told everyone who would listen, El Guapo of Queens would fuck over the ADA and he did. The other, the JFK tranche.
