Bitcoin is not “mined.” Saying so just makes it look like it has substance as if it were the equivalent of gold, silver, or platinum. Bitcoin is what one calls the completion of elaborate and meaningless calculations by computers consuming amazing amounts of energy. The computer calculations are truly meaningless as nothing results from them other than to declare that you now have a Bitcoin. Personally, I have taken to saying a Bitcoin is “created” although I am not sure it sufficiently conveys the sense that it is created out of ether.

I once asked a crypto supporter what the purpose of the calculation was, and got no answer. I know of a project called "condor" that uses idle processors to execute complex physics calculations for research (or defense) - an actual productive outcome. For crypto, nothing. It's precisely what you describe - just busywork to demonstrate that your input (i.e. money) was actually spent on something, but that mystery calculation itself - no intrinsic value. As least the tulip craze had a product underlying it...

It’s a scam.

Thanks, Tom, Another great update. You're correct, we must remain vigilant. We must also support Ukraine to the best of our ability - screw Krasov and Justa Dimwit.

From Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" (1835)

Custom, however, has done even more than law. A proceeding which will in the end set all the guarantees of representative government at naught is becoming more and more general in the United States; it frequently happens that the electors, who choose a delegate, point out a certain line of conduct to him, and impose upon him a certain number of positive obligations which he is pledged to fulfil. With the exception of the tumult, this comes to the same thing as if the majority of the populace held its deliberations in the market-place.

That's prescient as hell.

Too much attention to fact-checking the past, Zelenskyy? That’s some remarkable spin, I must say.

I heard some Fox person complain that Z was unforgivably “Ukraine-splaining” to Trump and Vance. Vance has heard “stories,” he does not need visit in person. He mentioned propanda tours, being taken to the site of atrocities in Bucha. The tours are meant to be persuasive, in that sense they are propaganda. Of course. In the same way a tour of Auschwitz is anti-Holocaust propanda.

But Vance said it as OK to create stories about Haitians eating cats.

They are closing down the walls & blocking the exits. I have been concerned about the ever increasing assault on voting rights & signed up for tonight's Red Wine & Blue re the SAVE ACT & how to salvage our voter registration drives even though we just did that & we still managed to be gerry mandered. Our local weekly protests grew & we can thank the Oval travesty for waking up more people to what is really happening in Ukraine & democracy. If Congress doesn't stand up they won't have a job to defend.

Loved the Kill Bill movies.

Thanks to all the Vermonters who gave us a reason to cheer this weekend. Two signs stood out for me: “J.D. puts the cast iron skillet in the dishwasher”, and “Vance wears jeans to ski.” Maybe you have to be from Vermont…or at least the Northeast.

I used to wear jeans to ski, with gaiters - it was saying to all the fashionista in their ski duds that I didn't fall down.

I can’t decide is they are the national bullies or the national abusers who want to make us feel like they are right and we are crazy. How about both.

I hate Bill Maher, too. I almost threw up when a friend showed me a clip of him saying that Israel’s total decimation of Gaza was just fine because that is the way wars have always been fought!
