Wow! I’m going to read this again over the weekend. Brilliant writing. Best line: “Laws are like spiders' webs: if anything small falls in they ensnare it, but large things break through too easily and escape.” Thanks.
This was terrific. But simpleton that I am, I really need a "Permanent Interests for Dummies." I kept whiplashing about - who are the good guys? The bad guys? I think that IS the point... I AM glad that Wilson ("ED WILSON, a shark masquerading as a human being) and Helmut Lang are DEAD.
Just finished and also need “ PI for Dummies” ! The romcom in me( I confess, but they do take me away….without any kind of thought process😜) is so glad Linda and David were able to survive for their next tango. At least I’m pretty sure they’re the good guys.😉
TC, I'm amazed that this was never made into a feature film. It's gripping and/or engaging from the get go and it never stops being entertaining. I love it. You have a real talent for this, it would seem. Not that I read a lot of screen plays, but IMHO this is great. BTW, I kept picturing Amy Adams circa American Mafia as Anne. That was without trying hard. I didn't peg the rest.
Congrats! Really, you do great chase and action sequences.
Hum. Permanent Interest: The serpentine misadventure continues ... or only unravels enough to show the wages (sins) of a state of war that never ends and a few more souls lost.
Thanks, TC. Needed a read like this. How your mind works!
Great ending! Like a fireworks show with some crescendos you think must be it, then something even bigger so you do know when you're there, but with a little frisson left in the spine of the denouement.
I love that line "Laws are like spiders' webs: if anything small falls in they ensnare it, but large things break through too easily and escape". We've been seeing it so publicly for the last few years.
Thank you TC, that was very enjoyable. A righteous rollicking read.
Is there any possibility of you ever doing something similar with your Vietnam film script? The movie that sold several times over but never was filmed?
I'm willing to wait for as long as it may take. Just the possibility makes me happy. Sure to be worth waiting for.
Meanwhile I am yet to start "The Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club" having finished "The Cactus Air Force: Air War over Guadalcanal" a few weeks ago. I found some of the dry data a bit hard going, but the observations and the illicit diary entries are absolute treasures. The correlations with the Japanese memories and records were revealing as well.
I'm currently reading the fourth book in a sci-fi first-encounter alien war series by way of a palate cleanser.
That's intriguing... Air America, the Gulf of Tonkin incident, oil tycoons looking for naval artillery fire to cover the sonar signature of their underwater survey charges, an early version of Rep. Charlie Wilson, defense contractors' lobbyists,... and Anne and David et al.
Substack really needs a WOW emoji. That was excellent TC.
I was thinking the same thing.

That quote is too much presentient of today's present interests.

She'd be a good choice nowadays.

This was a great read!! I deliberately waited until this weekend to binge read it. Is there really no chance that it will ever get made?
Really. :-(
This is great TC! I am going to read it again this weekend in one sitting with some popcorn. It would be a great movie.
Double WOW! I didn't want it to end. Thanks for this TC. I really needed a distraction. I would love to be a fly on the wall of your mind.
Late to the table on the last two; my head is spinning - blown away!

I'm thinking about that, but I have to find it first, when I am clearing things out here.

but it isn't really over. These characters are not dead.
"She got pissed when Schwartzkopf was ten minutes late for an interview 'cause Desert Storm had started. "
so now I wanna read the Vietnam script...
