Almost tripped over the box, which was sitting on the porch right in front of the front door step, this morning when I went out to compare the weather forecast with personal experience.
I’m excited to buy a copy for my son. His first love at age 5 was the P-51 Mustang. By 2nd grade he had devoured every book his school and the public library had on WWII aircraft. (I was cautioned at the public library that I was responsible for the expensive cocktail table books I checked out.)
At age 7 he could describe each WWII aircraft in great detail, Allied and Axis, including crew, flight range, wingspan, armament, ammunition payload, and anything else you cared to ask. This focus continued for several years, finally being supplanted by Battletech in middle school.
The whole history of the Mustang is told here, including the real story of how it was created (as Edgar Schmued told a group of us at a seminar on the airplane back in 1981, "Yes, it was built in 100 days, but I had been designing it over the previous five years."). A whole lot of myths get punctured.
CLEAN SWEEP is a vivid account by Thomas McKelvey Cleaver of VIII Fighter Command.
Its primary missions were to command fighter operations of the Eighth Air Force in the European Theater of World War II and to attain air superiority over the Luftwaffe. Two North American P-51 Mustangs, perhaps, on the way to a head-on attack get readers off to a fast start on the cover of
CLEAN SWEEP. “Blue skies and tail-winds for you', Tom!
Tom, have you any interest in writing about the brown water navy in the Viet Nam War? Some of those sailors are still alive and available for interview, and river patrols were key in that war. I know your specialty is the war in the air, but you could do the brown water story justice in your telling. Just a thought.
Further, do you have any opinion about giving the A-10's due for retirement to the Ukrainians?
Wow, wish my husband were still with us and could devour books like he used to. He would love this. He was always interested in every aspect of WW2. Likely because he had three family members killed in the struggle (two uncles, one cousin). How quickly we have forgotten how evil fascism and Nazism were, and still are…
I have to agree with your publisher, they were absolutely right with their recommended choice of the cropped image for that cover TC. I believe that more physical copies of your book will be picked up, handled, and perused in book stores due to that smart decision.
Congratulations TC! I look forward to reading it. Because I spend a lot of time in the car commuting, I also listen to many books. Will there be an audio version?
Congratulations! Always exciting to get that box on the doorstep! The arrival of each new addition of my husband’s textbooks were always a cause for celebration in our house! Cheers!

Looks great... But can a Mustang hover? 💥
I laughed out loud at that one.
But if you gotta fly fixed wing remember what A-1 Skyraider pilots said: “Jets are for kids!”
Yes.
