See that daffodil, TC? If you like them. my wishes for your good health comes with hundreds of them. If you prefer tulips, I've got thousands of them. Any special colors? If it's ferns, you have to be kidding. And these, unlike me, are non-toxic. Do I have ferns....we're all laughing and smiling and hugging you back to your usual ___ stupendous self!!

David, I am very glad that you came by. You have nothing to apologize for. Sometimes, when I am being playful, my tone and quip are more sharp or unfriendly than I intended. You were sweet and warm in the way you played with 'toxic', along with writing that I was not as fearsome as I imagined. David, my feeling toward you is also supportive. I hope that we continue to play in the spirit of good fun. My expressions are occasionally sarcastic or sardonic, I'll watch out for that. Still pals, I hope.

Have to be careful with fiddleheads, Hale. 'Fiddleheads, an early spring delicacy throughout the Northeast and Canadian Maritime Provinces, are the young coiled fronds of the ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris). Nearly all ferns have fiddleheads, but not all fiddleheads are edible. The Ostrich fern fiddleheads are edible, and can be identified by the brown, papery scale-like covering on the uncoiled fern. Fiddleheads are approximately 1 inch in diameter, have a smooth fern stem (not fuzzy), and also a deep “U”-shaped groove on the inside of the fern stem. Look for ostrich ferns emerging in clusters of about three to twelve fiddleheads per plant on the banks of rivers, streams, brooks, and in the woods in late April, May, and early June depending on your location. Make sure that you obtain landowner permission before harvesting fiddleheads..'

We used to eat fiddleheads years ago that we picked around our home in the Green Mountain State. As I recall we boiled them 3 times with fresh water. Good with butter and salt 🦊

I tested positive two days ago and am now hunkered down here at home on the coast of Maine. Yep, we did all the shots and boosters and masked near-religiously, but we demasked with friends over dinner out on Friday are are paying for it now. Definitely feeling ass-kicked but nevertheless counting our blessings.....a couple of years back this was a death sentence for too many. Heal swiftly and fully....

I gave TC some advice about vitamin D. D affects a lot of genes in the immune system. Without sufficient D, the immune system is chugging along on 2-3 cylinders instead of all 4. If you don't already take large doses of D--like 3000 IU a day give or take 1000, try taking 20,000 IU for 4-5 days, then drop down to 10k, and do that for 3-4 weeks, and then drop down to, well, 3000-5000/day, more if you're big, and old, less if you're younger and smaller. I'm 69 and weigh 140 lbs, and take 5000 4-5 times a week.

You want your blood level equal to or greater than 40 ng/ml. Mine runs ~55 ng/ml both in summer, when I do'nt take any D, but I run shirtless just about every day, and in winter, when I take the supplemetns.(I take the supplements from late sept to mid-late April, when the sun is too low in the sky even at midday to catalyze any D production. Rule of thumb: if your shadow is longer than you are, the relevant rays for D catalysis are being filtered out by the atmosphere. I'm south of where you are--Boston area, so you'd need to take D earlier inthe fall and go later in the spring.

This isn't exactly a controlled study, or even statistically significant, but... My brother, my sister, my sister in law, and I haven't had COVID. We all take ample D. My brother's daughter doesn't take it and she had COVID (she's fine now). I haven't spent much time in crowded indoors, but I haven't been masking much when food shopping. I don't know about the rest of us. And all of us are fully vaxxed. And my sister was in charge of getting Fairfax County VA vaxxed.

Tom, as much as it sucks to have Covid at any time, my first thought was to be grateful that you didn’t have Covid during Jurate’s last few weeks. It took a toll on you, but at least you were there and could fight for her wishes to be honored. I hope you feel better soon.

Oh I’m so sorry Tom. Rest your body and let everything else go. If you haven’t already, you might want to talk to your health care provider about a Paxlovid Rx. If started early it has been effective. Take care and we will be here when you are feeling better.

If you don't tke vitamin D, start now. Take 20,000 IU/day for five days or so, then 10,000 for a couple of weeks. Then 5000 will probably do it, although if you're relatively small for a guy, less will likely be sufficient to keep you going. Your immune system doesn't use all four cylinders unless you have sufficient vitamin D, which most Americans don't unless they take supplements.

Rule of thumb: if the sun is low enough in the sky that your shadow is longer than your height, the relevant rays for catalyzing D production in the skin are getting filtered out, so you need the supplements. If the sun is high enough to catalyze D production for a few hours a day in LA, sun bathing for half an hour-45 minutes/day might be quicker to fill up your tanks, so to speak.

I take Vitamin D also and have never had Covid. And I work in a hospital! I have heard quite a lot about a connection between low vitamin D levels and Covid.

My partner scoffed but we both started taking extra D and neither one of us has gotten a cold or the flu in many years...nor have we gotten Covid. I'm convinced.

I started taking D because I didn't go outside much and the Dr recommended it.Then I found that the soles of my feet, where I was getting a lot of psoriasis flaking, were curing. I upped it to 5K/day and my feet are fine and I too haven't had colds. I recently read that there's a "radical" Dr in psoriasis field who says D solves Psoriasis. All I know is it works for me. No psoriasis anywhere. And no colds.

But David your advice about vitamin d is dangerous.

Seriously so...

"Supplements" are an unregulated industry that in many cases brings relief and in others brings suffering and worse. Many of the supplements out there are fine. And many are a con.

And...drug interactions with supplements is an unstudied science experiment on the public.

Bill, I follow vitamin D very closely. Not just my own use of it, now going on 19 years, but one of my friends, a brilliant scientist at NIH has been taking 10,000 IU for many years after being prescribed this dose for osteopenia, and one friend of mine who was on a very high dose (20,000 IU) for MS, which is not uncommon, and which enabled her out of the wheelchair and dance with her husband. (And I sure wish they'd known about this when my mother was still alive!) Both of my siblings take high doses comparable to my 20,000 IU/week, as well as my sister in law.

Anyone who lies out in the sun in summer, when the sun is high in the sky, is getting a very high dose.

Doctors of a certain age were taught in med school that it is very easy to get a toxic dose. That has been debunked.

And as I said, before I started on D, I had a whole rigamarole I used to go through when I started to get a cold. This generally happened several times a year, and I wrote an article about what I did. I started taking D in '04, and a few years later, I realized I hadn't gone through my cold prevention/mitigation rigamarole since starting the vitamin D. And I have hardly had any colds or flu since.

Finally, I don't take D for about five months, equal amounts of time on each side of the summer solstice. During those months I run shirtless just about every day. The dose I get is likely much greater than what I get from the supplements I take. I've had my blood level of D taken in August a couple of times, and it's always been 55-60 ng/ml. I've also had it taken in December or January, when I'm getting my D from supplements. It's been around 55 both times.

These blood levels are around what researchers have found in tropical latitude hunter-gatherers.

It is well known that D interacts with many genes of the immune system--that the immune system essentially doesn't function on all four cylinders in people who don't have enough of it. It's normal for many people who spend time outdoors to have a lot of D in their blood, and if D and supplements had bad interactions, that would be showing up. As for D's efficacy, a number of studies of hospitalized patients have shown milder cases of COVID on those who had higher blood levels of D.

There IS some actual evidence that chicken broth eases respiratory infections--and hot is better--by enhancing the outward flow of detritus from the infection, in a way that other hot drinks, which still provide some relief, don't do. Hot drinks are likely to kill any viruses with which they have a close encounter. And anyone who wants a copy of my couple of decades ago article on this stuff can email me at supernova1@aol.com. Bonus: Deborah Birx is quoted in the article.

But if you take sufficient D, you probably won't need to do this stuff. That's what happened to me. I'd had a whole regimen for colds for I can't remember how many years, maybe 8-10. After I'd been taking D for a couple of years, one day it dawned on me that I hadn't done my regimen in a couple of years. (I started with 3000 IU/day, except in the summer time, when I get sufficient D from running shirtless in the sun. And, interestingly, my blood level of D is the same when I'm getting it all from the sun as when I get it from supplements--around 55 ng/ml)

Well that sucks! I am still masking - tho I only go to the library, Weis (grocery) & occasionally Agway. I did go without a mask to Agway last week - didnt "interact with anyone, but I guess that doesnt really mean anything!

There have been 2 families within 5 miles of me that all got Covid a few weeks ago. I'm pretty much a hermit at this point & have been for 3 years so maybe thats helped or who knows?

My daughter had all shots & was pretty sick with Covid - at one point. And my son & his family went thru it at least once - actually he did more than once. His immune system is not the greatest.

Take care of yourself - possibility of getting the antibodies? My son did one time & it really helped.

Dont do any shoveling (you ARE in Calif after all). I bet you never thought that would be an issue!

Well - I miss the snow - if its winter time - it needs to be WINTER TIME! It looks like we are getting snow tomorrow - 2-5 inches.

With this warm then cold then warm crap - had to start putting flea meds on my dog again or I should say tick meds. Up till the last couple days, the ground hadnt frozen. When my driveway is plowed - part of it ends up on my lawn.

I liked it, running in BEaver Brook Reservation this AM with my dog (there was a moderate covering, but the paths were mostly free of it). I'm not sure it was warm enough to need to give her the monthly anti-tick pill. But I'm not wild about snow, and we have no accumulation forecast in the next several days.

The only reason I started the meds was because I found a tick on Axel. I had been giving him garlic pills, but doesnt look like they were working. We have maybe 4-5 inches of crusty snow - if it stays cold even I can walk on top of it without breaking thru, otherwise its really hard going.

well, jeez Tom, that really sucks. is this your first time? I got mine the week after the vaccines cameout, when NYS was in full co-nothing crisis mode. fortunately, in my case, the really BAD part (feeling like I'd been beaten for half an hour by more than half a dozen stickball bats) lasted less than 36 hours. my doctor said Vitamins C and D and zinc. and the appropriate NSAIDS (which didn't do a tremendous amount but had to have helped a LITTLE). then I felt weak for a week. in fact, my first shot of the Moderna vaccine made me feel the same way as actual Covid, but about a fifth as bad. I was obviously very lucky. and I hereby will you to be as lucky, if not luckier.

so, with some luck, you oughtta be somewhat on the mend and just feeling a tad crappy by the middle of the weekend.

such is my declaration.

and according to my doctors, I have major pull with the powers-that-be...

I'm so sorry to hear that - it really sucks to take One little indulgence and get hit with a viral payload while your immune system is still probably dragging from stress. As if we could expect life to be fair...

This is definitely the time for you to coddle yourself. We don't need any more posts than you feel like doing, although please don't just go totally silent on us: Once in awhile just pop on to say you're hanging in there so we don't freak out!

If you do get paxlovid be prepared for a relapse which isn't to say don't get it - it's just to say when you feel better (and hopefully you will feel better very soon) be careful to take the extra time to be sure you aren't passing it on as the gift that keeps on giving.
