The kitten is extreme. That's why it works as the clear demonstration of who/what the enemy is. That is the truth of Fascism - the cruelty is the point.
One by one the icons of my youth are disappearing, a poignant reminder that one day it will be my turn, as it will for all of us. A life well lived, and a treasure house of memories. May you rest in peace, and forget the negative waves.....
I liked “Space Cowboys” and his role in a first team ensemble. And the comic/stuffy performance as the town historian with a nasty secret, Hollis Hurlbutt, on “The Simpsons.” Even his voiceovers in commercials were dripping with droll.
Just the other night I rewatched Sutherland in Ken Follet's "Eye of the Needle," a film in which he made my blood curdle. He could be utterly bloodless, but at the same time I could see him play Atticus Finch effectively. He was also a scene stealer in Jules Pfeiffer's "Little Murders" with Vincent Gardenia where he had a small role early in his career. Haven't seen it in years, but his performance was indelible.
My lovely wife has always loved him, having discovered a different "side" to Sutherland in the classic "Animal House" when he is reaching in the kitchen.
Awww, I really loved his acting, and he seemed like such a forthright and good person. My favorite role, after his acclaimed ones in MASH and Ordinary People, is in Klute. The first time I saw it, it was on TV late at night and I was alone in my apartment. To say I had the beejeebers scared out of me is in understatement. I am glad he is released from his illness but shall miss his talent. Farewell, sir.
Eighty-eight, wasn't cheated. Loved his comedies as well, M*A*S*H, Animal House (which only got made because he was the 'star,' the studio wanted), and "Space Cowboys."
I have never heard of "1900"! I will certainly look for it. He was so great in M.A.S.H. And he seemed a decent person. Unlike the ....well, no need to name one whose name will forever be known as a curse IMO.
1900 written and directed by Bernardo Bertolucci - a portrait of the rise and fall of fascism in Italy through the lives of two men born on New Year's Day 1900 - the son of the Padrone and the son of the Chief Peasant. It's still very radical.
The wrong Donald died, as usual.
Indeed!
The consolation, such as it is, is that he had a long life, a long career, and left us with a lot to enjoy and marvel at.
Yes.
You had me until the kitten.

Which is why, of all the authoritarianisms, Fascism is the worst.
That is what was said at the beginning of chump’s reign of terror. And repubs want more.
RIP to an excellent actor. I loved both MASH and Animal House. Thanks for the kitten “translation” as well. Particularly apropos these days…
Really great actor - never saw the movie with the kitten & definitely will not!

Bruce, I’m right there with you.

I certainly agree, Donald Sutherland was one of the greats, what ever role he played he was absolutely believable. I, too shall miss him.
Damn

You putting this up while I put up 1900 demonstrates that the man had RANGE and it was all good!

Yes, Klute is excellent.
I'll bet in the next 10 days TCM puts together a salute to him.

I really loved him in "Don't Look Now" I am saddened by his death but thankful he is no longer suffering.
And he always had that twinkle no matter how evil which I suppose made him such a joy when he was good. I’m sad. He must be close.
