Instead of a baseball bat to the head, I suggest they each be transported to the middle of the fire zone and be subjected to their own home - magically transported - burning down, cars and other toys with it. The only way any of them ever experience empathy is when it happens to them. MFs.

You know, I did think about how great it would be if Trump and a posse of Republicans could visit the wildfires to see them for themselves the way they did at the TX border. Lead them to believe they are going to stand in front of some burned out houses and rant about Democrat failings and then on a side jaunt take them out to actually see a fire. Up close and personal. Downwind. I'm not suggesting they be placed in a life threatening situation (no matter how tempting) but I do think they should experience at least a few moments of the power of the thing, the speed and implacability, and perhaps just a few moments of sheer terror.

Though that doesn't seem to have stuck with them after the insurrection, did it?

I love that idea, but your last sentence is altogether too correct; if the several hours of fear from the J6 insurrection/riot didn't stick with them, then a few moments of bowel-emptying terror from a fast moving fire driven by high winds isn't going to do it either. I'm not sure that ANYTHING can make it through the resilient layers of willful ignorance and stubborn denial of facts in which the MAGAts have encased themselves.

Not even then. They don’t make the connection.

I heard this report earlier and from The Bulwark Podcast. You are correct about Johnson and the gop. Guess what? This kind of conditioning on aid does not happen. Not for FL. Not for NC. Or anywhere else. "Politics should not come into crisis relief." Ted Cruz. !!!

I was totally shocked that sentence came out of the mouth of Ted Cruz!!

because he knows Texas will need aid to address some disaster in the nearer future.

Perhaps he city of Los Angeles and the state of California could jointly sue the Federal Government (not before next Tuesday) for failing to adequately manage their (50%) forests on Federal land, as well as failing to legislate that the private industries maintain their (47%) forests, as effectively as California has actually done with the portion within their control (3%)?

Mike Johnson is in total denial of the fact that California is responsible for approximately 25% of this country's economic success. California contributes many billions of dollars in tax revenue to the Federal budget and for every $5 that California gives to the Feds, they get $1--ONE!!--dollar in Federal funds in return. Unlike, say...Louisiana....(cough, cough)

We--the UNITED States (remember?)--OWE the Californians federal support in this disaster--California doesn't owe little Mikey the pretend Speaker a damn thing and he ought to shut his sanctimonious little pie hole, pronto!

You've certainly got that right, Tom. The spread of misinformation - even here in Sacramento County is ridiculous. All it seems to need is a few lies from trump and the disinformation and misinformation spreads faster than the Santa Ana winds spread the actual fire.

Why did Newsom even suggest trump take a "tour" of the fire zone? Does he think and epiphany will occur and trump will begin developing brain cells? Not a frigging chance.

Newsome wants to contrast Trump and his silly red tie against real working men and women putting their lives on the line. He wants to contrast Trump against grieving families. He wants to contrast Trump against utter destruction. He doesn’t want to change Trump. He wants to change the public’s perception of Trump.

Expand full comment

If there were the slightest chance of any of those contrasts changing the minds of the 77 million semi educated half wits who voted for trump I would applaud the effort, but I doubt any of the 155 million who did not vote for trump will care. We never liked trump in the first place and while his continuing toddler like behavior continues to disgust us - well, we never liked him anyway. I'd just as soon he kept his ugly fat carcass in magaland

Expand full comment

I daresay it would change the minds of some of the red voters who lost their homes and possibly a loved one. And nobody carries a message like a reformed voter, addict, gambler, etc. His visit would not get him any new votes, I'm sure.

Expand full comment

I would not be surprised if a substantial proportion of the affluent residents who lost everything to the wildfires are Republicans and many if not most are Trump supporters. If so, I hope this idiocy about requiring political concessions for California to receive disaster aid will register on them.

Completely expected and consistent with Trump's previous effort to withhold federal disaster funding and other funding from California and Blue states. The answer: Californians and those living in Blue states will need to boycott federal tax payments and stop shipping our products including produce and wine to Red States. This is just the beginning of Round 2.

A special little touch?), "next...!"

Seriously, I do wonder how the states' tax money is assessed and collected. I do wonder if there might be some combination of fancy book keeping and foot dragging to decrease the amount of tax money from CA that goes to the federal government under Trump by the amount needed to rebuild LA county and not sent by a Trumpian government.

Expand full comment

The State of California does not pay that much federal income tax. WE pay the tax. When folks, justifiably, say let’s withhold CA tax payments, that means we, individually, withhold tax payments. You ready for a levy on your bank account?

Expand full comment

Oh darn, you're right. You're saying that when they say CA pays a certain percentage of the taxes the federal government runs on, they mean CA residents pay that percentage. It's easy to lose track of. So can you think of any way to recoup some of the money that goes to the federal government if they won't cough up for disaster relief? It sounds like it has to come down to a CA vs the US suit.
