Katy Porter for governor!

William Anders took the Earthrise photo, not Jim Lovell. Anders never flew in space again but that one photo had impact far beyond his service in NASA, energizing the nascent environmental movement.

TCinLA's avatar

My mistake. I met Anders and Borman out at Planes of Fame when they brought their warbirds (Anders - F-51D post war, Borman P-63 off the production line)

Vague Craig's avatar

Lovell was the pilot of the first ever command module to orbit the moon when Anders took that Earthrise photo (Apollo 8), and was also the commander of the mission which had a critical failure (portrayed by by Tom Hanks, Apollo 13).

*edit* or so I believe.

JDinTX's avatar

It was our opportunity to see ourselves as earthlings. But NASA started scaling down after Apollo 11. Nixon had a war to escalate and crimes to commit. What a wonderful world we could have with no crooks and traitors

Thanks. I heard many other F-35 cancellations. Are they working on an F-36? I didn’t know they had a kill switch!? So much for doing your own service and upgrades.

Andrew Abshier's avatar

Thailand was not in line for F-35s but they did chose the Saab Gripen over the Lockheed Martin F-16 to further upgrade their fighter force.

Thank you, TC. I learned this week, after Jim Lovell died, from Mark Edwards former new director of a local television station and Director of Marketing at ISU that he had picked up Jim Lovell for a speaking engagement at the university. Mr. Lovell told him that he had lived with his aunt in Terre Haute after his father was killed in an auto accident when he was 10 for several years. I met Mark a couple years ago at a basketball game at ISU. We have been friends on Facebook since. I had listened to Mark every morning on the radio when I was on my way to work. Mark has a lot of stories to tell. I am sure Tom that you and Mark may have crossed a path a time or two.

Still paying and still enjoying. Have limited reading to some degree, needing to pay attention to "internal affairs" here, lol! Also taking a deeper dive into the outdoors while we still have halfway reasonable temps (early A.M. and later P.M.). We've got your back here, Tom!

Tom, on a website I look at ("WriterUnBoxed") they have a feature where you can "buy the author a cup of coffee" by donating a small amount to them. Perhaps you could add this feature to your Substack? I don't think anyone here would be bothered by that, but I speak for myself.

Thank you for all you do to keep us informed.

Thanks for the great recaps that always reinforce my will to meet reveille. You're right that's there's much work to do, but I'm wondering if we might also want to consider just letting this revenge-addicted moron just bottom out and do the clean-up later. Unless nature stops him, he'll be in wrecking ball mode ad infinitum. And like taking the puppy to see the mess on the carpet, we may have to let the voters see what the majority of them have wrought. Cleaning up behind Trump as he keeps pooping on the country, while it's in our side's DNA, we may be defeating ourselves. Just a thought. It will pass.

I prefer to touch the puppy's or kitten's nose in it (quickly gently) once while saying "NO, Bad" and then taking and placing them on their newspaper or litter tray to smell, taste, and think for a few minutes behind a closed door while I clean up the mess.

Cruel? Maybe, but it does seem to get rapid results. Yucky? Definitely, but they do lick their asses to clean themselves don't they?

It's just a shame that nobody, from his parents onwards, metaphorically ever grabbed DJT by the scruff of his neck and rubbed his nose in his own shit.

TCinLA's avatar

That doesn't really work with cats. You do it and they look up at you with "Yes, and...?" looks. Right now there are several here who better be thanking Bastet the cat goddess that they're so cute, because that is the one thing saving their asses.

Strange, I think I only had to give Squeaky that treatment twice. But, then again, she was pretty damn smart and even trained her humans to get up and open the door to let her in when she rattled the screen door.

A point of no return may be in the offing, like Rome and many others. It may not be up to us, but I’d like to think there’s an Ike somewhere

Here are a few headlines from articles on my favorite local news TV station about career fuck-up John A. Sarcone III, all from June and July of this year.

"U.S. Attorney Sarcone answers questions about why he listed board-up building as his residence"

"Sheriff: U.S. Attorney threatened by man wielding a knife in Albany" - he was sure he was going to die at the hands of an insane immigrant. The local PBA backed him up.

"US Attorney describes moment he was threatened with knife in Albany"

"Videos show U.S. attorney's encounter with knife-wielding man"

"Charges reduced against man accused of threatening U.S. Attorney" - the dude was no where near him. The charge of attempted murder based on Sarcone's testimony was reduced to menacing after the video came out.

"Sarcone says appointment extended, board of judges says otherwise" - The panel of judges wouldn't allow him the position.

Man, those trumpstein picks just can't stay away from the nazi phrases. "total war"? Add that to the DHS using HH and "14 words", and they're just piling onto their big hill of fascism.

Lordy Lordy, what a shitshow. How do you do it. My parents, who always considered education to be the path out of poverty would be gobsmacked that a government official would say that “getting away from education” is a valuable thing. Lifelong learning has been a plus in my life. I’m thankful that I had parents who were not proudly stupid like McMahon.

“..there are no sanctuaries from the reach of the federal government.” Well, blow me down. That makes my blood run cold because I know, and knew before Nov 5, that the cretins make that threat to each and every one of us. And Ronnie made a joke about the government coming to help people. So hope he’s spinning is the midst of a wildfire in hell.

As to RFKJ, Colbert had it right. His edicts are bad news for fans of living. Ye hear that you old wise asses who voted for somebody who wants you dead and is actively working to that end. Chump’s revenge on us all, idiots and sane people alike.

I am shocked by what appears to be proof that chump actually believes his own bullschittery. At one time, he said he would run as a Republican because Repub voters were idiots who would believe anything that Fox said. That brain worm must have escaped RFKJs brain and jumped on chump. The one time he was right???

Love pics, felines are not the only worthy companions for humans, just not as cuddley.

Your last sentence made me laugh out loud. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Why oh why are we not commenting on and celebrating Aug 9, 1974?!

The day Tricky Dick left the Oval Office in disgrace?!

TCinLA's avatar

I hate t o say it, cuz I sure hated Nixon (was on the minor enemies list), but he almost seems quaint now.

Yes, of course…and on the list of shoulda/coulda…if the motherfucker hadn’t been pardoned…

(But that list is long…)

"The chairman of Denmark's parliamentary defense committee said he regrets choosing the F-35 'Flying Swiss Army Knife' for his country, citing fears the US may threaten to cease support for the fighter". That's another face of one of the most lasting harms this administration has done to America. Even if we have free and fair elections in 2028 and elect a Democrat as President, and even if that Democrat does as I had so earnestly wished Joe Biden would do: Assign a task force to examine every move made by this regime and figure out the most lasting way to undo, reverse, prevent future iterations of each and every harmful thing... nothing can ever again erase the new way in which the world views us as always being potentially four years away from anarchy, treaty violation, instability.

In fact, not only have we revealed to the world that they can never again have absolute confidence in our strength and at least desire to appear honorable, but we have weakened democracy itself world wide. Putin always said that autocracy is more nimble - able to make and enact hard choices quickly, whereas democracy requires a lengthy process. Now we have also demonstrated that whereas autocracies may be stable only for the lifetime of the autocrat, democracies may (not will but may) be stable only for the term limit of the elected head.
