There has been a lot of protest activity since the populist government came to power. Your description of the voting demographics in favor of democracy remarkably mirror voting patterns in the United States. The young and the educated may yet save us!

Thought about this a lot yesterday. Yes, I have a pretty boring existence. What good news, maybe. Down several paragraphs confirmed what I had in the back of my mind. What will the hard right do to negate the results or do what Bannon says to everyone. Claim you won, no matter what. Still, seems that the truth is not being debated, yet. Lordy, after the unbelievable suffering during and after WW2, seems that people would not fall for the same Schitt again. Ye hear that, USA

yep. I'll bet the voting machine companies are holding their breath waiting for the attacks.

Jeri- for clarity- IRK=I Know Right.

Acronyms do to the flow of prose what a dead cow does to the flow of a stream. Please avoid them!

Huh?

"I Know, Right?" (with the right punctuation) would be IKR. But where did Camilla B. (GA) see IKR to question what it means?

It was in response to “Lordy, after the unbelievable suffering during and after WW2, seems that people would not fall for the same Schitt again. Ye hear that, USA”

I see now that you were responding "I know, right?" to the "Lordy,...comment." (This replaces my deleted comment.)

With all the other horrible new in Israel I wasn’t paying attention to Poland but this is good news! Any good news at all these days is so welcome.

Anne Applebaum was interviewed on 'Morning Joe" in the last hour reported the Polish Opposition has won the National Election narrowly defeating the fascist (no rule of law) regime.

Anne reports the Polish Opposition is a Coalition of Center, Center Left & Center Right parties which is a lesson for many Countries.

The new Government will realign foreign policy to support Ukraine.

A lesson sprouted, I do not doubt, from seeds sown by Lech Walesa and Solidarity, many years ago.

Oh, that 73% of Americans would vote for anything! That's a sign of a healthy/engaged democracy. Fingers crossed for Poland, a country that's been bulking up its military and armaments, as have the Scandinavian countries. They're smelling Putin on the move, a Putin who also wants an expanded influence in the ME.

Judith, when I saw 73%, I thought exactly the same thing.

Thank god for some good news to start the week! I spent 2 months in Warsaw in 2014 and fell in love with Poland and its people. The tragedies of the past were not forgotten, but there was an energy of hope and freedom and optimism for the future. It would be tragic to see that quashed.

I'll chill the champagne but hold the toast until after the results are final.

Wow. I read your post first and did not notice the WP mentioned the Polish election.

At least I can sleep a bit sounder tonight.Hopefully, no let-down in the morning.

I am still trying to breathe after your last really, really bad news post!!! In your true John Irving style this one is hopeful. Hope that Poland's results are a sign that far right populism in Europe is deemed wanting!! Thanks for this. As someone else mentioned, I also look forward to Anne Applebaum's take.

Yes. If the count of votes confirms the exit polls it will be great news indeed. Building a governing coalition that can actually create the conditions for undoing "law and justice", will take every bit of civil society as the party 8 years in power has done so much to weaken democratic processes. We face the same situation in the US with people in congress who should have been barred for their support of the insurrectionists and election lies. Glass still half full Tom. Let's hope the PiS of Poland has been somewhat decommissioned.

Per the NYT LiVE, Judge Chutkin in the Coup Case, has just issued a Pre-Trial Order to protect witnesses like General Milley, Court Staff &:Prosecutors. No stay to my knowledge

You guessed,it correctly, Maggie Haberman reports TFG is already grifting on the Order.
