A 10-year-old girl from Ohio was raped a couple times and became pregnant. The rapist and factchecker for WAPO, Glen Kessler, were not alone in voraciously feasting on her tragedy. TC covered the outpouring by adding Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R), Megan Fox of far-right website PJ Media, Tucker Carlson, the Wall St. Journal, Washington Post and conservative politicians licking their chops, while challenging the story's veracity.

Conservative media outlets, such as The Daily Caller, pressed Dr. Bernard for more details, …'

'South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a rising star in Republican circles, denounced CNN host Dana Bash for trying to "trap me" by asking her about the incident. "Now it looks like the story was fake to begin with," Noem tweeted on July 8. "Literal #FakeNews from the liberal media."

'The Wall Street Journal editorial page called it a "fanciful tale" in a piece representing the official editorial position of the paper, headlined "An Abortion Story Too Good To Confirm." Fox News's Emily Compagno, co-host of Outnumbered, told viewers abortion activists were ignoring real rapes to propel their cause: "What I find so deeply offensive, is that they had to made up a fake one!"

"There have been a number of false or inaccurate claims made about abortion law and the Dobbs decision, including false claims that women can be prevented from traveling for medical care or that ectopic pregnancy treatments are now barred as abortion in some states," George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, a Fox News contributor, wrote in a column for the New York Post. "These false accounts can be a dangerous form of disinformation if women believe that they cannot receive treatment for legal procedures."

'The Republican attorney general of Indiana, Todd Rokita, appeared with Fox's Jesse Watters tonight, tweeting that Watters was fighting "fake news." He announced to Watters' viewers he would be scrutinizing Bernard's record to see if he could challenge her medical license.' (NPR)

The attorney general of Indiana, Todd Rokita, was talking about seeing if he could challenge the medical license of Dr. Caitlin Bernard, a prominent obstetrician-gynecologist who is an assistant professor at Indiana University's medical school and the source of the girl's story.

A ten year old girl was raped and became pregnant. Look at who came out to take the meat off her bones. There is no pig pen large enough to contain them all.

it certainly is. thanks for it, Fern.

Thank you, Fern, for commenting and penning a final sentence that finds words that so many are thinking.

I have not been able to write or comment about it. I’ve taught and guided too many 10 yr old girls during my career to even begin to accept the surreal reactions to this story. Or that it is even a story. I’m trying to find out from my lawyer activist niece in Ohio what is being done to protect this child.

Salud, Fern. Again, thank you. 🗽

MaryPat, I didn't find the language to match my feelings for the child, her mother and father (if he has been caring for her) or a civil way to express my opinion of SCOTUS, McConnell, Trump, fundamentalist Christians and Catholics supporting anti-abortion movements as well as the TrumpRepublican Party. They are perpetrating crimes against the American people

this whole story is sickening on so many levels, but what stuck out immediately to me, which I haven't yet seen anyone bring up, is that this asshole is calling Child Protective Services (or whatever it's called in whichever place--in NYC the agency gets re-named after every major scandal) asking for information about a particular case. what the fuck. as someone who's worked in Preventive Services and has had to report many serious cases, my antennae were activated: that information is some of the most necessarily protected, confidential stuff out there. anywhere. so the idea that a newspaper fact checker could get information like that from that kind of agency is pretty insane. we all know that there are ways for badly-intentioned people to get this sort of information, but when this is done, the law has been broken. consequently, it's unlikely (to me, at any rate) that ANY Protective Services agency is going to communicate with a guy like Kessler. as for the rest of it....the tendency of propaganda media (how's that for being "polite?") to never mention the shit they peddle after they get caught...it just strikes me as being their internalization of the old Roy Cohn "never apologize" thing, period.

Fern, a pigpen is far too good for those ghouls who feast off tragedy and heartache. Pigs are intelligent creatures who would keep themselves rather clean if provided the opportunity.

The rightwing slime machine is powered by the Murdoch corporation and I cannot even write in a civilized manner what I hope karma hands to those fiends in human form, Rupert and all his crew.

T L, There are others to join Rupert, such as Koch and Zuckerberg. You are absolutely correct about pigs. I like them and apologize for using them as a metaphor.

Oh yes...the organizations under the Koch umbrella are our own long-time homegrown slime-generators; Murdoch, an amoral greedhead, started in Australia and went on to feast off pickings in the UK. After he ruined print journalism in the UK, Murdoch that bottomless pit of avarice, looked at the U.S. and positively salivated at the money he could make selling trash news to the masses. He bought his citizenship from 'the great manipulator" Reagan and has been busily sliming the mediascape ever since.

However, Zuck and Bezos are certainly equal to the task of matching Murdoch in the enterprise of trashy slime manufacture, that much is true.

That's what infuriates me about these holier the thou right wingers. In what universe should a 10 year old whose been subjected to the trauma and violence of repeated rape have to bear that monster's child? If you have a god that requires that, you and your god are just as monstrous as that rapist. All of you can go straight to Dante's 7th circle of hell and rot there for eternity.

The real tragedy here is a 10 year old girl -TEN YEAR OLD GIRL - not only raped - not once but twice - just think about that - but that she could indeed become pregnant. This little child - one year older than my granddaughter - has been traumatized as deeply as any child or woman or person raped by Russian soldiers in Ukraine. And there is plenty of that going on. And if these victims of sexual violence are in Poland, they are having a hard time getting the appropriate medical care to address their trauma. I am beyond angry about all of this "reporting". The 6 supremes should be jailed as far as I am concerned. As far as I am concerned none of them should ever have been confirmed. But hey - the Federalist Society speaks - Robert Bork's voice. Remember him?

I am grateful to you, TC, and Lucian Truscott for writing articles that convey compassion for this child. And, at the same time, clearly note the names to add to the “even lower than low” list of despicable adults wanting to discredit anyone that helped this child or reported the story. And then….and then, Tuckems adds an extra spoon of rot to the narrative.

How dare they. Senator Klobuchar referenced this story and this young girl. Her voice was shaking with fury. It’s just too damn much.

I mentioned in another comment that I am trying to find out from a very reliable source close to the facts about what kind of support can be contributed for this child and her family or caregivers. I’ll update.

The problem with not having any standards other than one's political preferences is that one has no basis for making judgements including about one's own errors. The Times and the Post are now finding out that it's impossible to be a journalist absent minimum standards of honesty and accuracy and, as the official upholder of such at the Post, Mr. Kessler found himself swimming in a pool of his personal lack of integrity.

I can't let this go. A fucking rape victim, impregnated at 10 MOTHERFUCKING YEARS OLD, and all those white men acting like it's her fault. Good thing he was an " illegal " cause no Amerikkkan would ever do that. Too busy using the hand sanitizer and checking the mobile at a school shooting.

Yes. We can only hope that she is being shielded as much as is possible from this political media storm and its fallout. I read that the Indiana doctor who performed the abortion now has lawyers looking into seeking legal redress for the lies spread against her. My thoughts are that, if any financial compensation is to result perhaps some could be placed aside in a trust for the girl's further health needs and future education.
