Incoming House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries described the Republican “circus” in Washington as “chaos, crisis, confusion, and craziness.”
He’s nailed it.
Not only is he right, but the situation is even worse than described.
The House Republican Caucus represents a real national security threat.
The “Sedition Caucus,” who are identified participants in the domestic terrorist attack on our country are about to take leadership positions in that caucus, assuming they can ever get themselves organized to establish the 118th Congress.
Last night, January 6 committee Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson and committee Vice-Chair Rep. Liz Cheney released a letter they sent to the White House yesterday, in which they state there is a real fear the Republicans will leak names of national security personnel who work at the White House, who testified to help their country before the now disbanded committee’s investigation.
Thompson and Cheney stated that White House employees had “provided very important information for the Committee’s investigation” and had their identities shielded, but with the changeover, they can no longer “ensure enforcement of the commitment to maintain the confidentiality of the identity of the witnesses.” They expressed concern for “the safety, security, and reputations” of the witnesses.
Destroying the work of the committee is clearly Qevin McQarthy’s goal, which he clearly demonstrated when he let it be known that he has agreed to a rules change for the new congress that will direct the January 6 committee’s files be sent to the House Committee on Administration, rather than to the National Archives. Given the choice between committing treason to become, Kevin McCarthy wouldn’t think twice.
This would put everything literally within grabbing distance of every one of the 137 traitors who voted to overturn the 2020 election, AFTER the capitol was ransacked by the insurrectionists on January 6, 2021.
In it’s report, the January 6th Committee revealed that Trump and his co-conspirators "engaged in at least 200 apparent acts of public or private outreach, pressure, or condemnation" regarding state officials to overturn the election results.
Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman tweeted, “I've been covering House Republicans for 13+ years. I've never seen lawmakers so uncertain about what comes next. Tons of anxiety, nervousness and fear about today, this week and the future”.
This morning, before the first ballot for speaker, the House Republican caucus melted down into a shouting match as they started screaming at each other, with McCarthy supporters vowing to make sure that any House Republican who voted against him would be punished when committee assignments were made. This is not how one goes about finding a compromise so they can move forward.
What makes the new House majority such a great story is that they embody all the worst elements of what the Republican Party and Movement Conservatism are now: corrupt, anti- democratic, unprincipled, ungovernable, uninterested in governing, cruel, and destructive.
All that and they’re a collection of clowns to the majority of Americans. As they are proving today.
But just remember, these idiots campaigned on their outrageous and transgressive conduct, “owning the libs” above everything, and promised if elected they’d continue and “dial it up to 11.” With Democrats in control of the Senate and White House, there is no legislation they can produce that will go anywhere other than in the nearest “round file.” Thus, this Insane Clown Show is their only real political currency. That’s their appeal to the MAGAts. The insanity is the point. It is performative terrorism.
There are 18 House Republicans who won their seats in 2022 in districts carried by Biden in 2020. In the 115th Congress, Democrats focused on Republicans who had won in districts carried by Hillary Clinton, publicizing their votes in favor of the Trump agenda. In 2018, most of them were defeated, which led to the Democrats taking back control of the House. The same thing should be done during this congress with these 18 members, none of whom ran to serve only one term.
All it will take is peeling off nine of them on issues like the debt ceiling and other issues where they do not want their futures tied to the antics of the crazies, to bring about discharge petitions on bills that McCarthy or whoever replaces him does not want to see advanced. The conservatives can be effectively hamstrung with their own insanity - insanity that is on full view today.

Too bad the U.S. Congress isn’t constituted like Parliament or other legislative bodies where they call for special elections when the bodies can’t find majorities to conduct the business of the government. We have to endure this nonsense for two years until the next election cycle…but in a way it’s somewhat entertaining watching the GOP tear itself apart. It would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic…
There have to be at least 9 of the 18 who are reasonable people and who don't want to have to hide from their neighbors every time they go home for fear of being ridiculed over the actions of their party colleagues. Democrats need to think a little bit outside the box and steal the show.
