TC, you nailed it with this post, especially:

"So, regarding Biden’s age, you know what? Get the fuck over it"

And, better still:

David Ignatius, Jonathan Chait, Eliot Cohen, and all the rest of the over-educated, under-intelligent, otherwise-unemployable trust fund babies of the DC Punditocracy: Shut The Fuck Up and stop wasting our time. Go get real jobs, assuming anyone would hire you to do anything actually important.

TC, I agree with you too, my friend; you're at the top of your game:

"Fine wine and single malt Scotch aren’t the only things that improve with age."

Tom, I subscribe and read you, Robert Reich, Jessica Craven, Robert Hubbell, HCR, Dan Rather, and Joyce Vance, among others, on Substack. Together, all of you are making me better informed than anything I could find in the mainstream; those days are over. You all have your own styles, but all are well researched with analyses that you can't find in the mainstream today.

But you, Tom, cut to the chase and simply say what we're all thinking privately.

Keep up the great work.

Full disclosure—I am a 69-year-old retired teacher.

I’m not a journalist - I’m a beat-to-hell, 30-year general assignment reporter and a history major. My view of things is this; I pay attention to Charlie Pierce, but I think George Will, Ignatius, Max Boot, Eliot Cohen, Jonathan Capehart, all the talking heads at CNN and nine-tenths of the bobble heads at MSNBC suffer from terminal rectal-cranial inversion.

I hear some of the Bush II administration retreads posing as moderates on MSNBC babble about the kinder, more civil times of Reagan and the Bushes, and I barely control my urge to projectile vomit.

When NPR drags Alberto Gonzales to comment on the utter corruption and fascism of the GOP, all I can say is that he damned well should know given that he aided and abetted torture and dissolution of privacy rights in this country.

Mitt Romney as the last vestige of decency and honor in the GOP? Hah, fckin hah.

I’d vote for a zombie Joe Biden coming to eat my brain like a three-minute egg before I’d even think of giving a Republican the time of day and a heartfelt wish for them to trip and snack their head on the trigger plate of a hardened steel grizzly bear trap.

In 31 years, in this job, I haven’t met a single Republican who wouldn’t sell their younger sister or brother into the East Asian sex trade. I have met a fair number of stupid Democrats, but most of them had risen to their level of incompetence. I still consider myself a retro New Deal Democrat because, in the end, it’s the right goddamned thing to do and because, while I am an asshole, I’m not a dick like all those goddamned conservatives saying Biden is too old.

I agree; I can't even imagine having the gall to march up to my PCP and asking to be put on XYZ or whatever unpronounceable nostrum has been advertised. It boggles my mind--I am not a medical expert nor am I unbiased about my own conditions--why would I even try to diagnose myself???

Expand full comment

In my experience as an RN Patient Advocate, younger doctors/healthcare providers don't seem as put off by patients' requests for "the purple pill" (Nexium), or at self-diagnosis, and instead use it as a springboard for discussion of symptoms and an array of (cheaper) treatments. [Full disclosure: I am the mother of a voice actor, whom I am sure you have heard promote a now well known drug on TV.]

BRAVO, TC!!! You have expressed my frustrations with the media perfectly. President Biden is in better physical, mental and moral condition than the compulsive liar, traitor, criminal he beat a few years ago. That unfortunate piece of garbage is not fit to shine Joe Biden's shoes. With your permission I am going to blast this article around. I hope you will submit it to HCR's Letters from an American too. And one more thing--Vice President Harris is perfectly fit to be his Vice President. Time for the media to report the news instead of trying to make it. You rock!!

Of course Harris is fit, but she is so unapologetically female, and Black and Indian and the child of immigrants with a Jewish husband. All obstacles to popular approval, especially the unapologetic attitude. (Though Nimarata Nikki Haley succeeded in Louisiana, having played down her Sikh heritage, dropping her first name. “Kammy”Harris, perhaps?)

I forgot to mention Harris’ connection to California, a turnoff for some, reminding them of their hatred of Nancy Pelosi and her San Francisco values.

But even if VP Harris herself decided to bow out, the gossip about whether she was pushed would hurt Biden and all Democrats. So, Harris it is, and let more of her competence be known, and her personality show. Elected to the Senate in CA without any charm whatsoever? Didn’t happen that way.

Expand full comment

When I finally became conscious of all the things Pelosi did for us Dems, and so deftly, I fell in love. As for Harris, I didn't like her. But as election season approached, and it became clear she wasn't going to be replaced for good reasons, and I read something that suggested that she was a lot better than I thought she was, I decided I'd go with that, and I'm fine with her now.

The rump, or the derriere, as I prefer to call it, is an oft very attractive secondary sex characteristic, even though it originally evolved so that our ancestors could run (no other primate has one and no other primate runs). Please do not conflate it with Mary Trump's ugly, disgusting uncle.

I don't know why secondary and primary sex characteristics are used as epithets, but I feel strongly that they should not be. Ass, and words relating to the female and male genitalia should all be sacred. One could refer to him as slag. Besides, there are people who have the same last name, like Mary, his wonderful niece.

How about, "he is such an evil SOB, and a plug-ugly one at that," or if you want to call him an orange one I don't see anything wrong with that, although "plug ugly" seems more deservedly derogatory.

I'm pretty sure that calling someone an ass comes directly from "jackass." and our "ass" began across the pond as, of course, "arse." so the task now is to check out where "arse" comes from. this is being typed by a person who just has to get up and take five steps to get his hands on the Sixth Edition of Partridge's "Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English," so.....ok..."arse" has MANY entries, but it's been used to indicate "buttocks" for a very long time. it was not considered "vulgar" until about 1660, after which it was never printed in full until 1930, when Frederic Mannings's great WWI novel, "Her Privates We" (itself a dirty joke from "Hamlet) came out. it's a book I actually read sometime in the '70s and remember nothing much about except that I dug it.

like you, David, I would not myself have chosen to use a term for something so objectively lovely as an insult, but there it is. people aren't always that smart; what else can I say?

The infuriating thing is that the only rational reason to be concerned about Biden's age is an increased risk of some future medical event, so panicking about his age is the equivalent of saying "I am so afraid we'll lose him mid task that I'm going to pull him off the job" or "my tower might topple so I'll push it over". Human nature does this all the time; "my heart will be bruised so I'll walk away to avoid pain" and variations. Sure, these all carry different nuances but they are all as illogically self fulfilling.

Our medical advances lead to us living longer, we know how to maintain our health longer (and Biden pays attention to his health) and our last three Presidents died at 93, 93, and 94 years of age. A single Biden stammer which is a known speech condition he's had since childhood which does not affect or reflect any mental condition is jumped on by the press while entire baffling word salad speeches by Trump are reported on with straight faces as if that man were Ever intelligent or well informed, much less retaining his full faculties.

Biden has done an amazing job. He remains as effective as he ever was, from a blend of remaining sharp and applying lessons learned with experience. We may have other good candidates, but honestly I don't think there is a one who could out-perform him in this moment in time. "Tried and true".

I reply or comment every time I see one of these ageist articles, and I suggest everyone go to the bottom of every article they see and check whether there is an opportunity to remind fellow readers it's a rotten band wagon to jump on, and let papers know their damage to democracy is noted and resented.

Expand full comment

as a lifelong stammerer, I find myself defending Biden on this point sometimes as often as several times a week.

a stammer can be a pretty fucking disabling condition and used to be referred to as "a disease of many theories," meaning that it's actually pretty complicated.

at this point in my life, I find myself valuing it a lot more than I ever thought was possible when I was seven or eight...

That’s called having a “weekend.” Apparently Ignatius, Chait, Cohen and the rest of the desperate-to-be-listened to, desperate-to- be- read, desperate-to- be- invited on TV types can’t bear not being in the limelight. The completely unnecessary, unhelpful recent opinions of Ignatius surprised me.
