Actual Conservative Mike Murphy’s description of the Conservative Political Action Conference this weekend: “25 Japanese soldiers in a cave on Saipan in 1953, waiting for the Emperor to send the rescue force.” I really did fall out of my chair laughing at that.

I have enjoyed the spectacle of name speakers haranguing over half-empty halls since CPAC began this year. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. But we should keep the pressure going until CPAC, in the words of Grover Norquist, is small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Mike Murphy's description of the CPAC conference reminded me of a book my father owned about Japanese soldiers hiding out in caves on Pacific islands years after the surrender of Japan. I no longer recall the title, much less the author, of that book. I think it could have been about New Guinea but there appear to have been quite a few on various islands, a few of whom didn't show up until circa 1973-74!
