Copyright violations out the wazoo. It reminds me of the Tasini case, in which freelancers won the right not to have their copyrighted articles show up on electronic databases.
Having once been a youthful reader of all the sci-fi I could find, I'm now comfortable being a neo-Luddite, one wary of anything with lights, dings, or things to tap. Wholesale theft of literature, art, music, and even peoples' thoughts via Musk's Neuralink brain chips have all been predicted.
I thought about this a couple of days ago when Hogsbreath at the DOD disrespected the Code Talkers, caretakers of the Navajo language that the Japanese could not understand in WWII. I thought we would be wise to keep forming offshoots of our basic language (like hip-hop, scat singing, slang, colloquialisms, etc.) so we can tuck away our species' best work in a coded language vault where it could only be retrieved by a special order of archivist priests or priestesses. After all, we are a species that seems to cherish its artifacts.
Tom, your rage is righteous and shared by so many others who resent the mindless over-processing of mankind's truest soul food, the work of true artists and artisans.
Is there an algorithm that will produce, in concert with other "shares" in unison, a frequency that will blow up their servers? ALL of them? Gotta get working on it.
For the 50 years that I can recall, republicans have tried to make things worse for average people. Who among us needs to have a crew devoted to making things worse for us. Truman warned about this; the socialism crap has been the lie that they used from his time to ours. Of course, hate for “others” is the cherry on the cake. The zinger is a boomerang. MAGAts missed that little detail. Chump promised no SS cut. His doppelgänger is doing it, so both should hang together. And may the word Republican become a curse word as hated as any. I noticed in FTW that republican is not on many signs for local elections. “Conservative” should also to be as vile as any word ever was. They have made it so.
It's called "Malevolent Creativity"......stealing your books in order to continue the development of AI and the increase of profits--your intellectual property be damned!!
And then start publishing "bookish products." I have been working with my publisher (God Save England!) about them putting a requirement in the Author's Conditions of Sale that "no AI was used in the production of this manuscript." I hesitate to name a couple well-knowns in my field whose work I was using to support my research on another book, and found they had wholesale "cut and pasted" from other original articles I was also using for research. Not the sort of "that quote's a bit too much" that we are all subject to, but out and out several pages at a time, way over "fair use." They had both retired by that point; one was at my publisher and I quietly let my editor know my discovery. Sadly, there are a lot of (conservative) readers of military aviation history whose intellectual standards aren't that high (surprise surprise). But if they would do that, I am pretty sure there are other "wannabe writers" who'd be happy to turn to AI - and publishers (mass market lower-level "bodice rippers" and such that are usually read "one handed") who'd be happy to get rid of "pesky writers" in the production of that.
We were taught (in the schools I attended) that anything over ten words must be put in quotes and the author given credit. How quaint that seems now. I still adhere to what is right over what is done - it's not just about giving credit (although that's very important) it's about being a credit to yourself; about core honor. I am so sorry this happened to you. They stole your work and creative product - that sucks beyond expressing. They can't touch your integrity.
As a retired electronic engineer & designer I have to agree; anything after radio is highly debatable. Medical imaging can be excepted, yada yada. Definitely the PC and Phukerberg
This just proves Dorothy Parker's adage that the second-best thing you can do for an aspiring young writer is give them a copy of "The Elements of Style." The first best thing, of course, is to shoot them while they are happy.....
That's so fucking criminal. As the lyrics say, "well, we'll, well... "
I always thought that this is how they did it.So I'm not really surprised, but it pisses me off.Nonetheless. Theft is theft. Creative these clowns are not.
Mr. Hubbell is a crackerjack lawyer and he lives nearby - you could meet at the local Starbucks to hash out a plan, quickly. I use the word unconscionable way way way too much these days. But I’m not misusing the term. Ugh. Staying tuned.
Earlier today, you wrote that you don’t like to disagree with RH, by the way, and the point you made about what looked like acquiescence, but wasn’t really… I read that in some other column as well… That it was a ploy in some respects, maybe while they figure out the next step of a game plan. Survival and it might’ve been misread…? Anyway, that’s another topic. Please forgive me. I digress.

A thousand likes.

All of mine, too😡
Damn then all to hell.

Nothing they are doing is "conservative."
But they have corrupted the word, it is forever changed, like all of us

It’s called thievery, stealing, copyright infringement, downright evil.
Fuck those fucking fuckers.
Theft of intellectual property.
Copyright violation.
Sleazy as hell.
Note: A friend of mine, also an author, found her books there as well. She writes (for want of a better term) faith-based action stories.
I cleaned up my language for her.

Tom, you are in good company, along with Shane Gericke and Whatshisface in Portugal.
Freaking outrageous. Copyright, yeah, but how much will it cost to fight? This is an ACLU class action lawsuit waiting to happen, maybe.
Two lawsuits, thrown out.
Damn.
Jeezus
Who has very little to do with this, Mr. Scott.

Two C/A lawsuits have been tossed.
Copyright violations?
As Kent is happily pointing out, to major class action suits, supported by major publishers, have been tossed.
WTF
I don't understand what you are saying, but that's OK.
there have been two major class action suits against Meta for doing this. Both have been tossed by the judges for failing to "show harm."
