A long life and a successful life in all the right ways. I have never read a nasty word about him, and throw in that his best friend was Don Rickles.

By the way, the director of that final Newhart episode was Dick Martin. Yes, as in Rowan and ....

When this news popped up today, it took my breath away. Everyman indeed. And for some reason, Dick Cavett keeps coming to mind. Your narrative mentions so many marvelous and varied personalities from the several decades… As nonchalant and relaxed as Bob Newhart was in his manner, his mind was incisive to be able to do what he did with such precision, almost surgical. I’ll have to do a search to see if Dick Cavett did a show with Bob Newhart sometime. Cavett was brilliantly incisive while easy with a laugh… I am imagining the two of them together, laughing. It’s a beautiful sight. Refreshing.

Loved Mr. Newhart was and always will be. May he rest in peace.

I remember Cavett interviewed him, I think more than once. That was the best interview show.

Thanks for the details in the life of this very funny man. Didn't know he was pals with Buddy Hackett, a guy who never made me laugh but who did Newhart a find service in introducing him to the lady who'd become his wife. Newhart's comedy albums were standard fare for study nights in my flaming youth.

We are losing many great people, Bob Newhart among them.

All my childhood heroes are fading away, one by one.....guess some day I'll fade away too..... He had a great ride - and for those who did not know, he built model airplanes as a hobby.....just like Tom and me..... Now, as they say in aviation, he has 'gone west' - where the air is always calm and vision unlimited, and the sun shines forever.....

"Hi, Bob," was a throwaway greeting in "For All Mankind."

We all have Newhart stories. When we were in college, it was common for big names and big bands to pick up gigs on campuses located on the train track running out of Chicago and South. Newhart was the big name comedian who appeared at Illinois State on some day like Tuesday, doing a two-act performance. He appeared with a no-name, Peter Nero, on piano between his stand-up comedy acts. Nero hit the keys and took off playing innovative and fantastic playing of old favorites as fill between acts and the 350 of us went wild, he was so innovative and that suprisingly good. As the standing crowd applause came to an end, Newhart came back on stage, applauding with the rest of us. He read the audience and turned the remander of the show over to Nero, with his blessing, and I think that's when Nero's career took off and Newhart got 350 some new and loyal fans. Humor and grace, showmanship and capacity to promote other new talents given with his characteristic humility. Don't think my wife and I ever missed a Newhart show and to this day, remember him everytime g we pull out one of Peter's old albums. We miss Bob. Better times.

He was great - loved the series. He didnt have to "do" anything except seem to be himself. So sorry - I didnt know his wife passed away last year -that had to be hard for him.

This makes me sad, but glad for the life of Bob Newhart and for the humor so many of us were able to enjoy thanks to his gift.

That ending fr "Newhart" still stands as one of the funniest and most surprising endings in TV history - it was kept a secret from everyone, even the rest of the cast, lest the joke get out. The surprise worked.
