As if the unvaccinated don’t have enough to worry about, researchers in the department of urology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine recently found cells from the Covid-19 virus in the penises of two men who underwent penile prosthesis surgery for erectile disfunction.  “In our pilot study, we found that men who previously did not complain of erectile dysfunction developed pretty severe erectile dysfunction after the onset of COVID-19 infection,” said Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy, associate professor and director of the Miller School’s Reproductive Urology Program.

One of the men in the study had been hospitalized for the Covid virus, while the other man had been infected, but had reported only mild symptoms.  Researchers at the hospital also collected penile tissue from two men with no history of Covid infection and found no evidence of the virus. 

In a previous study, Dr. Ramasamy and his colleagues found that the Covid virus had invaded the testes cells of some men infected with the virus.  Researchers said their findings represented “a first step in understanding the virus’s potential impact on male fertility and whether COVID-19 can be sexually transmitted.”

A report in the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday revealed that “some men are coming into doctors’ offices saying erectile dysfunction has occurred following a COVID-19 infection,” according to Dr. Ryan Berglund, a urologist at the Cleveland Clinic.  “We don’t know the scale of the problem at this point,” said Berglund, as the evidence of erectile dysfunction in infected men is “anecdotal at this point.”

Erectile dysfunction could turn out to be a result of “long Covid,” according to Dr. Emmanuele Jannini, professor of endocrinology and medical sexology at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, who is one of the authors of a study in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  It has been well established since Covid was identified that the ACE2 protein is the “receptor” for the Covid virus to invade cells.  In males, adult “Leydig” cells found in the testes “express” or produce the ACE2 protein.  According to the NIH study, “Post-mortem examinations of testicular tissue from 12 COVID-19 patients showed significantly reduced Leydig cells, as well as edema and inflammation in the interstitium (cell walls). A recent report on 31 male COVID-19 patients in Italy identified that some patients developed hypergonadotropic hypogonadism following the onset of the disease.”
