As for disrupting marine ecosystems, there's a Texas-type light tower, the Chesapeake Light Tower, that's 13 miles off of Virginia Beach and not visible from shore. "The Chesapeake Light Tower stands 13 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean off Virginia Beach. This steel, “Texas style” tower was built in 1965 and is 120 feet tall. I went out on a scuba tour of the tower back in the 1970s and, as is true of shipwrecks and pier pilings everywhere, was delighted to view the beautiful and thriving ecosystem that had evolved on and among the pilings. It's also a local favorite fishing site; I saw lots of good-sized fish.
