Yesterday, Donald Trump publicly called on Putin to release any dirt he might have on Hunter Biden, the president’s son.
The statement was not taken out of context, nor was it a gotcha take. His own spokeswoman enthusiastically tweeted out his plea to Putin.
In an interview with Just the News, Trump seized on an unsubstantiated claim about Hunter Biden receiving a hefty payment from Elena Baturina, the former wife of the late former mayor of Moscow. And then asked Putin to provide details.
“She gave him $3.5 million, so now I would think Putin would know the answer to that. I think he should release it. I think we should know that answer.” Trump was referring to information from a partisan Senate report published just weeks before the 2020 election, which also focused on Biden’s role on the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Hunter Biden’s legal team told NBC News in 2020 that Biden had “no interest” in that firm that received the money, so “the claim he was paid $3.5 million was false.”
Some accounts leave out the key phrase that Trump used when he explained why Putin might help: "As long as Putin is not exactly a fan of our country... I would think Putin would know the answer to that. I think he should release it... you won't get the answer from Ukraine... I think Putin now would be willing to probably give that answer."
“As long as Putin is not exactly a fan of our country... “ - said the former and perhaps future president shortly after GOP lawmakers urged President Biden to more forcefully punish Putin for waging war on Ukraine.
Even as he spoke, Putin is waging a war of unremitting terror. The West has rallied to oppose him, and nearly every American political figure — from both parties — has denounced the Russian thug. And it is at this moment that Trump once again reached out for Putin’s help in attacking the sitting American president and, by extension, this country.
Here’s the treasonous smoking gun: Trump explicitly framed his request to Putin as an act of retaliation not just against Biden, but against the United States itself.
Last night, after reporting on Trump’s statement, Evgeny Popov, the host of the “60 Minutes” show on Russian State TV, said: “It’s time for us, our people, to call on the people of the United States to change the regime in the U.S. early, and to again help our partner, Trump, to become president.”
Our partner. Donald Trump. Help him AGAIN.
It is as if he decided to recapitulate all of his most egregious scandals — from “Russia, if you’re listening” to “I would like you to do us a favor” — multiplied by a factor of genocide.
And daring us to do something about it.
I don’t think it is coincidental that Trump did this on the day the news came out that there is a 7 hour 35 minute period of time on January 6, 2021 - during the exact hours of the traitors’ assault on the capitol in Washington - where there is no official White House record of Trump’s phone calls, despite lots of news of calls he made to various public figures during that time.
In The Atlantic, David Frum points out:
Trump encouraged the violence and welcomed it in real time. The whole world saw that. But the world does not know everything about January 6—not yet, anyway—and Trump’s phone behavior may suggest the answer to the most important remaining questions:
Did Trump in any way authorize the attack in advance?
Did Trump in any way communicate or coordinate with the attackers as the attack unfolded?
Trump’s phone choices sought to conceal the answers to those questions. Why? One of the pivotal moments during the Watergate scandal of 1972 was the revelation that President Richard Nixon’s secretary had erased 18 and a half crucial minutes of a tape recorded three days after the break-in. The erasure suggested consciousness of guilt by the president, and helped end his presidency.
Trump’s 7.5-hour gap likewise suggests consciousness of something. And it sure smells like guilt.
Defend this, Republicans, defend his call for help from Putin. Defend his behavior on January 6. Go ahead. Don’t dodge or hedge. Defend your leader’s partnership in slime and blood with Vladimir Putin.
Tell us again that he learned his lesson, Senator Collins..
Explain again that you think the whole Russia thing was a hoax, Senator Graham.
Justify putting this defeated, disgraced, twice-impeached deplorable back in the Oval Office, Senator McConnell.
And make the case for giving the nuclear codes back to this scabrous traitor, former Attorney General Barr.
It's not just Trump. He's the boil on the surface but the disease within allows the boil to fester. It's in the house, it's in the senate. It's in their blood and bones now. When John McCain was alive, he really was not necessarily rational much of the time. Now, in death he looks like a saint. And look at what was left? - Lindsay Graham, Mark Meadows, Kevin McCarthy Ted Cruz and Ron Desantis. It's just pathetic and profoundly dangerous and the crowd loves it. DeSantis is actually running for president as the man who can deliver “competent Trumpism.”
Trump trying to kiss Vladmir Putin’s ass before 2022 was bad enough. Trump appealing to him now, at a time when headlines like this are prevalent, is obscene. I fail to have the words to adequately describe my outrage.
Donald Trump is the kind of man who would have publicly appealed for dirt on FDR from Adolf Hitler AFTER December 10, 1941. (For those not good on dates, that is the day Hitler declared war on the United States, in accordance with the terms of the Tripartite Treaty - the Axis - the one and only time in his career he ever kept a promise)
Let’s end on a good note: according to Sensor Tower, Trump’s “killer social media app” - Truth Social - has experienced a 93 percent drop in sign-ups since Launch Week, drawing only a total of 1.2 million installations of the app.

I think today the remaining lurkers on my FB page have probably dropped off. I don't know who re-labeled the party thus, but I am calling it the PPP (Putrid Putin Party - formerly known as the GOP) and I'm announcing to all that I will no longer associate with ANYONE who votes for that treasonous party or its candidates. This will bump off a few theater acquaintances and members of groups to which I once belonged. No sweat. I don't feel like being "nice" to people who would vote for this slimeball and destroy our country further from within.
As sure as the sun rises in the east even on this flat earth ( fucking morons), POP ( h/t Charlie Pierce for Pudgy Orange Palpatine) is as dependable as Michael Myers escaping from the loony bin. I expect nothing less from this true fucking lunatic.
And the almost 8 HOUR gap in phone records.......
Where have you gone, Rosemary Woods, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Now if someone would kindly narcan Merritt Garland to consciousness, well that would be peachy.
