The sad reality that has been ignored for far too long is that the Central Valley isn't viable as an agricultural center for the types of crops that are currently being produced there using classical and outmoded corporate agricultural methods. Changing everything to regenerative and sustainable methodology would enable some farmers to survive, but in the short term a lot would be lost and, as you point out, that's a lot of Republican votes and donations as well as a substantial federal and state investment in support for the folks who would be losing their family farms and businesses. Anyone who thought there was an easy solution like turning a valve is so far wrong as to be ridiculous and shouldn't be taken seriously on anything; but we knew that.
We need to relocalize farming, make it smaller and more sustainable, with out the factory farming that fouls waterways and requires large amounts of fossil fuels. The trend. From the 1970s through the 2000s was to grow larger operations, but these are unsustainable.
The orange doofus just has no concept of literally ANYTHING that entails how farming or any means of earning a living works - I'm guessing he believes if you "turn the valve" somewhere there is enough water that will make everything green again!
The facts are - California and many other western states are mainly ARID and werent meant to be "the central valley" - not meant to grow any crops that are water intensive - nor were they meant for grazing herds of livestock - I could go on, but thats the gist of it.
I believe doofus thinks if you use enough water - California will look like the East Coast!
Thank you for this excellent synopsis of the complexities of endangered species management, water management and the consequences of blatant stupidity. The problems associated with fire management are complex as are the solutions. Ignoring the weather conditions and blaming the intensity of the damage on a non-existent pipeline and valves demonstrates willful ignorance.
Nobody knows what he is talking about. He doesn’t know what he is talking about. But the Republican cretins know that others don’t know the specifics of any state’s issues. It is deliberate subterfuge. It sounds sensible to ignorance. But it also serves the political ignoramuses whose agendas are greed and power. He will destroy all of us to serve his ego. Muskrat is not a stupid man, just another greedy bastard. We already have a Congress of monkeys. Chump and the oligarchs constitute a mob of mayhem.
Did this doofus ever earn a diploma or degree? Has anyone ever seen such documents? He certainly skipped most of his classes. Wharton should have agreed to keep his grade transcripts confidential as long as he kept his mouth shut and didn't betray their failure to teach him anything at all.
Trump may want to reassess the fed's relationship with California, not just their huge economy, but the locations of so many key military operations, most of which are there for strategic regions and are not vulnerable to the political whims of cowardly morons in suits.
He did not graduate from Wharton - that is just more bullshit from him. He did attend and graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, but he was only allowed to AUDIT classesat Wharton, because he didn't have the grades for even their then-low admissions standards. A professor at Wharton whose class he did audit remembered that "Donald Trumop was the dumbest fucking student who ever walked into my classroomn."
Or California may want to reassess its relationship with the federal government. If it was independent, it would be the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world, and even better if Washington and western Oregon went along. Idaho would welcome eastern Oregon and both would be better off for it.
If California leaves the Union and takes Washington and Western Oregon with them...all the rest of us blue or blue-ish states will want to leave as well!!! (Okay, I'd actually like to see Maine join Canada. Instead of Canada being the 51st state, we can be Canada's 11th province!
Me too. I don't WANT to be a Canadian....but watching what this utterly corrupt thieving grifter is doing and will continue to do to this (admittedly not yet perfect) nation while our supine Congress critters refuse to stand up to the Felonious Fake for fear of "being primaried", is deeply upsetting.
It's astounding just how ignorant he is, and just a tick less than 50% of voters in the last election bought into his shit, which puts them in the same ignorant boat with him. If you had suggested that this was possible 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago they would have said you were insane. The fascists in this country, and we have had them since the 20's and 30's, because they were allowed by Truman to slide back into their holes, have fortified themselves and in so doing destroyed the public education system that ensured an educated electorate. Dumb them down and they will willingly let you pick their pockets in addition to believing things that no sane person would give any thought to. I love the idea of the big valve that someone could just turn to make Southern California green like Ireland, maybe a 4 year old would believe that, but no one with an educated brain would give it a moments thought. Our enemies have to be delighted with this turn of good fortune for them, in their wildest dreams they could have never predicted it, and it just keeps getting better, look at who we just put in at Defense. If you think he will not be tested, better think again, the whole moronic team will be tested, just like the insipid clown was with Covid, he didn't know whether to shit or go blind. I don't know if it will be a biological test or a military test, or a combination of the two, what I do know is that the axis powers are planning and they will take advantage of any opening they are afforded. And we just elected a moron as president.
Instead of calling him ignorant and moronic and clownish, I like to see what he stands to gain by his decrees. There are better minds than his putting all this in play.
What he stands to gain is the ability to walk right in to the lives of private citizens without knocking because . . .
Dick I like all you said above. I would like to add this: Disect and examine every headline and news article put out by his owned media. They will all have the goal of tweaking our perception to make us believe that what they are saying is true when the opposite is closer to the truth.
Colombia said NO to military planes full of immigrants. Trump threatened steep tariffs. Then an AP article comes out saying “The White House says Colombia changed its mind.” But did they?
All President asshole has to do is look at how low our reservoirs are in Northern California to see the real problem. The weather problems here are not comparable to the northeast or Florida. Traditionally (back before the out-of whack climate became so bad) we would have tons of rain in the fall and early winter and again in the late spring, followed by hot dry summers.
We also had water "storage" in the very deep snows in the mountains. Back in the days when I could still ski, I'd drive the snowy highways with 20 foot tall snowbanks on each side. Once in awhile we'd get stranded in the Tahoe region when particularly heavy snow storm came on. I had to quit skiing in 2001 when my knees gave out - I was only 68 and was thoroughly pissed with my body.
Now there are years when the snow is so light the side drifts are barely 3 feet high.
Heck its not only California - I remember growing up in NYS - we had sometimes 3 feet of snow - big enough for snowforts. It was great!!! Ice-skated all winter long.
But climate change - the phrase none of us is likely supposed to utter anymore.
"Fear of increased ICE raids have already negatively affected the nation’s agricultural sector, causing alarm that food prices could skyrocket in the near future as a result of Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policies.
Bakersfield, California, saw a massive drop off in the number of field workers showing up for work last week after Border Patrol agents in unmarked Chevy Suburbans rounded up and detained immigrants in the area, profiling individuals they believed to be field workers, reported CalMatters.* The end result: acres of unpicked oranges roasting in the California sun at the height of the season.
Bakersfield makes up a small portion of California’s Central Valley, which produces approximately a quarter of the nation’s food. Kern County, where Bakersfield is located, has ranked within the top three agricultural counties in the nation for the last several years, largely off the backs of undocumented laborers, who are estimated to comprise more than half of the county’s workforce, according to CalMatters.
During a three-day operation in Kern County, undocumented workers were targeted walking in and out of gas stations, getting breakfast, at Home Depot, or while driving along the 99 Highway, leaving many with no other option than to simply stay at home.
“We’re in the middle of our citrus harvesting,” Casey Creamer, president of the industry group California Citrus Mutual, told CalMatters. “This sent shockwaves through the entire community. People aren’t going to work and kids aren’t going to school. Yesterday about 25 percent of the workforce, today 75 percent didn’t show up.”"
Thanks Tom for laying everything out so that reality is supported rather than the lies of ConvictedFelon34. If only the media listening to him lie would just LAUGH OUTLOUD at his ridiculous words and gaslighting. I mean, what if someone shouted out," You cannot control state electoral law anywhere and that includes a state you hate because it has a democratic governor." That reporter might get ejected but at least TRUTH would be spoken. This is the kind of courage that is contagious. And it tells those listening that there us hope by standing up publicly to testify to the TRUTH that he is a liar.
You can't expect any of the entitled "careerists" of the DC Press Corpse to ever think of coing such a thing. How would they ever get their book deals if they did such a thing? They'd lose access if they did that.
Tom, it is highly likely you are correct. Still, surprises can and do happen. Imagine the utter surprise, even shock, to hear someone say the absolute truth...like the kid shouting the king is naked! I always loved that story! Calling a lie a lie and identifying the guy as the BIG LIAR. That would be the beginning of the end of him and this regime.
Another factor, according to a guest columnist in Matt Stoller's anti-monopoly newsletter BIG, is that private equity roll-up and profiteering resulted in half of LA's fire trucks being unavailable: https://substack.com/inbox/post/155466046
Proof that the MBA degree needs to be cancelled and most present holders of the degree need to be in prison. Every field where MBAs have taken over - from emergency equipment production to aircraft companies and more - has seen this exact same play (because they all go to the same schools and learn the same baloney). Rather that being run by "emergency equipment guys," or "airplane guys," or whatever, they're run by these scum, who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. American business schools are a cancer on the economy. But you knew that.
Just like they discovered they needed to include a section on bedside manner in doctors' training, they must need to include a section on the value of quality in MBA training; maybe a section on very long term value while they're at it.
On voter ID, I think Newsom should say "fine." THEN the election boards should send out forms to every registered voter asking them to sign it and return it, saying "this will mean that your signature is your official voter ID."
Washington actually did send out those forms well before the election. It meant that much less time was spent dealing with those whose signature had changed since they registered; the changes could be checked and verified ahead of time. This is usually because of impairments; signatures don't change that much over time usually.
My signature hasn't changed since I registered to vote in WA in 1970--pack rat that I am, I have cancelled checks to prove it. My most recent drivers license picture looks nothing like me, since one can renew your DL by mail and they just keep reusing the old picture. Odd thing: I've aged.
Because of dysgraphia, my ‘signature’ is just a squiggle which I’ve gotten very good at replicating. A ‘real’ signature is impossible for me to write out reliably with any success.
Excellent and thoroughly researched. Thank you for consolidating this info. It will help me push back on SoCal trumpers that walk around bitching that “I saw tons of dead brush along blah blah highway,” Newsome’s gotta clean that up!” Etc. Or, “did you know there’s a valve that Newsome could have turned to stop all the fires, but instead he cared more about a fish?”
The ignorance…it burns. Literally and figuratively.

Hes an idiot and that is an insult to idiots.
"...a pattern of using leverage for personal or political advantage"
Stop it. You're cracking me up.

Fairness and integrity, I'm dying laughing here.
"...undermining the democratic values".
I'm LOLing on the floor.
"...fair and equal treatment for all states and citizens".
Comedy gold. I see a career in stand-up for you.
Those words mean nothing to him. Nothing.

Why am I not surprised.

Other than my signature - I now print!!!
TC, remember the Peripheral Canal, that rejected proposal of decades ago It sounds like djt just heard about it from the farmers.
About 75% of California water is sourced north of Sacramento. SoCal also gets drinking water from the Colorado River.
Stay Strong California!!!! Keep saying NO to Dimwit Donnie the Puerile Pretend Prez.

It’s garbage, and Trump really knows this, but he thinks he’s entitled to his own facts.
